We booked this with Thomsons having done a lot of research because my husband needs a wheelchair at times. So Thomsons emailed ahead for us asking for a ground floor room. Claire the lovely receptionist gave us one close to the shop, pool and bar which was absolutely ideal. There is a little ramp up from the rooms to the pool, but easy to deal with.

Prices in the shop and bar were very good and I loved the cocktails. The internet zone was very good if a bit expensive but I only wanted to get hold of my emails so that was OK. There is a cupboard for book exchange behind reception, so just ask where it is. They also sell books in the shop. The girls in the shop are so friendly, as was everyone in the family run hotel. Get your water there, it's the cheapest in town. Don't drink local water, I tried it and lost quite a few pounds - the wrong way!

We were a bit limited as to which restaurants we could go to because of the wheelchair. Kalamaki has had high concrete pavements installed with ramps but be warned the ramps are very steep and some are impossible to negotiate for a woman pushing a 14 stone man. But my husband was able to step up or down those, which helped.

Getting to the beach with a wheelchair is difficult, but I found the walk to the airport rather pleasant and we spent some lovely afternoons watching the aeroplanes and butterflies in the surrounding fields. Greek people turned up with their picnics at the same spot. During one of our walks I was just about to steal a fig off a tree when the owner caught me, he was such a charming guy with limited English and even gave us a handful of delicious September ripe figs. Happy days!

We stocked up early with main supplies from LIDL which is inland from Laganas about three miles. Worth a taxi ride away to save loads of money, or like us we called in having hired a car in the first few days. If that sounds like we're skinflints, we're not. It's just really difficult for us to go out and about. We spent plenty in the local area including Sofia.

The only niggle I have is the music is a bit loud around the pool (or am I getting old?). Yes the furniture is dated in that room (it was the older part), but I don't go on holiday to stare at the room. The kitchen area is the standard 2 rings, there was a nice new kettle and massive new fridge. I bought a little omelette pan for small snacks. We often sat outside in our little fenced off area full of gorgeous flowers and chatted to passers by on the path with some very happy exchanges.

How do i put this - Sofias Hotel was the nicest, cleanest, friendliest place iv stayed in Zante. From the moment we were dropped off where we were met by the receptionist Claire (who was so friendly) to the moment we left Sofias made us feel welcome. The rooms are basic but they are cleaned everyday with new towels put out every other day. They have their own pool, sports bar which serves food between 8am-5pm, a big screen which shows comedy such as lee evans every night. The staff were brilliant especially Ackros (sorry hope thats spelt right) who makes the best cocktails on the island. The hotel is very child friendly and we really enjoyed staying there.I couldn't really find any reviews when i was researching it as even though its called Sofias Hotel some companies refer to it as Sofias Studios or Sofias apartment but i would definately recommend it to anyone looking for a fun relaxing place to stay :0)
