“I wont stay here again.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

I stayed here on the second night of my cycling the Otago Central Rail Trail. It is a 1930s art deco style hotel which looks good from outside but that is probably the highlight of this hotel. The rooms look like they were last renovated in the 1970s (Im not being cheeky here, they really do) and most have shared bathroom facilities. If you stay here expecting a hotel you will be disappointed, the rooms are more like a backpackers than a hotel. The worst thing about it was the food. My wife ordered an (overpriced) chicken, cranberry and brie burger - the "chicken" in the burger was a deep fried frozen rissole with one small peice of brie and a smear of cranberry. It was inedible.
If you do decide to stay here, do yourself a favour and eat elsewhere. Next time I am in Ranfurly I will stay in one of the motels. There is a good size Four Square Superette about 50m from this hotel, and the rail trail is also about 50m away.

Overall we felt the Ranfurly Hotel was good value for what it is - a graceful old country pub that has seen better days. The new owners say they have plans to upgrade it and we wish them the best as it has "good bones" as they say. We found the food in the restaurant surprisingly good. We're vegetarians and couldn't find anything appealling elsewhere and ate in and were pleased with our Moroccan vege parcels. The owners were helpful (especially with bike security) and breakfast set us up fine for a day on the trail.

Where to start?!! Although the bar staff were very helpful and friendly the kitchen staff were well below 5 star standard. Raw veg, small portions, over the top prices and cold plates. On top of this 2 of the 6 members at our table had to wait almost half an hour longer than the others to receive there food. The staff behind the bar were very apologetic and kept re-assuring us that our food was on the way and that the wait was due to the over-whelming numbers eating there due to brass monkey weekend, (obviously they are not used to large numbers at this venue). As a bar, it is one of the best I have been to. The atmosphere is enjoyable and friendly. The bar staff were very polite and the 2 hour 'happy hour' was very enjoyable. As for the food,,. no words could describe the disappointment felt not only by our table but also by others eating there at the same time.

We stayed as part of a group while cycling the rail trail. The hotel is old and need millions spent on it to bring it upto speed. The positives were: the linen was clean, there were electric blankets, enough bedding and the water was hot.
The negatives were: the rooms are very tired, there are not enougn power points in the room to plug things in, and you end up with power cords arching 1-1.5 m up the wall to reach the sockets, the TV was ancient, the remote did not work, the bathroom was desperate for a revamp- the shower was over the bath and the shower nozel was approximately 1.2 m from the base of the bath so to wash your hair you had to contort yourself backward if you were of any height. There were water stains doen and walls and the toilet cistern was an antique- which sounded like Noagra Falls when you flushed the toilet. The sink was located in the room and the faucet leaked when it was turned on. Cleaning was of an average standard there was unidentified cream of some description on the carpet. A friend was staying in a single room which literally contained a bed and that was it- with a shared bathroom down the hall.

The food: generally of a poor standard. We had overseas guests with us who ordered Terakihi after being influenced by our saying how nice it was. This "special" was in excess of $40 and was just embarassing- what looked like a fillet of undersized fish, 3 small halves of boiled potatoes and some boiled spinach carrots and broccoli. The portion was pitiful, and was not accompanied by any sauces etc- just woeful and embarassing. The other meals were OK. The service was terrible two staff on for 40 odd guests in the dining room. It took in excess of 30 minutes to get 19 meals out once they had started serving and the last was a good 10 minites after the second to last meal. The German waiter needs to learn about customer service- he tryed to force an aditional meal of the "roast of the day" which was corned silver side ( a very unconventional "roast") on to our table despite everyone having eventually received a meal. Desserts were not worth the money and were cold when delivered despite being advertised as "hot" on the board. Coffee was rated as 3/10 by one partaker- underextracted. Breakfast was again disappointing- one type of cereal (muesli) available, one type of fruit, instand coffee and toast that you made your self. The bacon and eggs was perfectly acceptable.
I note the business is for sale- the manager might get better results if he extracted himself from behind his emails and started putting some time in on the shop floor.
I would recommend you stay and eat elsewhere- we stayed in 2 other country pubs while biking and although they are old and rurally located the food and service was exceptional by compariosion.

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere

Third night while cycling the rail trail. Old but comfortable and clean. Lunch and dinner - good food. Disappointed with continental breakfast, would have expected more of a choice with fruit instead of just one variety.

The Ranfuly Lion Hotel provides poor backpacker accomodation at hotel prices. We left Ranfurly feeling exhausted, cheated and generally very unhappy. If only we had known before booking, we would have cycled right on by.

The building is old and every movement and sound is amplified and travels through the building. As a result we spent the night listening to doors being slammed and people stomping back and forth. The food at the restaurant was standard chip shop fare. Do not order wine, the red wine we ordered (Central Otago Pinot Noir) had turned to vinegar. Do not eat breakfast here either. We were served watery and old poached eggs and chicory coffee for $15 each. They did not serve the ciabatta bread or the fruit that was promised on the menu either.

After paying $200 on checking out, my husband and I didn't know whether to cry or laugh. We have to put it down to experience - hopefully one day we'll be able to look back and laugh about that awful little place we stayed at.

Don't make the mistake of staying here. The hotel has a big 'For Sale' sign on the outside - hopefully the new owners will be able to save this place.

This is the second of two hotels we stayed in while biking the Central Otago Rail Trail. Both were typical country hotels (the other was the Omakau Commercial) and both were perfectly adequate for a family that just finished biking 40 miles over railroad ballast and gravel, but this was the nicer of the two. The owner, who is also the manager, has invested a lot of time and energy into fixing the place up, and his efforts show. The rate is about half or less the cost of local B&B's, the dinner menu is extensive and the beer is good and cold. The Ranfurly also has the only "Happy Hour" I came across in NZ, and that was welcome, too. This in not a Ritz Carlton, but three of us had a comfortable room (shared bath), three full dinners (one was kid size)with wine and beer (and a milk) and a continental breakfasts for just over US $100. One of the best deals in NZ.

  • Liked — Friendly host, good food, reasonable price for room and meals.
