“laidback resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

I was with a large group that included non-divers. This turned out to be the right choice because it has a swimming pool. The kids loved it and alternated between the beach and pool. Great service. The resort arranged a boat tour around the island – we made a couple of stops to snorkel.

Spacious airconditioned rooms and bath (with hot water). I brought soap because of the review below, but the resort supplied shower gel, soap, shampoo and hair conditioner. We got a room on the ground floor across the pool. Hotel cleaning staff swept our porch more than twice a day, and provided beach towels too.

The staff was accommodating and flexible. At our request, they set up tables on the beach where we had a dinner of grilled tuna, noodles and chicken … and mango juice. We brought our own wine and they waived corkage. Food preparation took awhile, so best to order in advance.

Dive shop (Seaquest) is a few steps from the reception. Seaquest arranged a few dives, including Monad Shoal. We saw one thresher shark that day. The divemaster, Luwil, was safety-conscious and knowledgeable. He spotted a crown of thorns starfish and pointed out small marine creatures to us.

Certainly a cut above the rest.

The Malapascua Legend might be the only resort on the island with a swimming pool, but that's about the only positive thing I have to say about it!

The rooms are outdated and scruffy- quite surprising when you consider it is the most expensive resort on the island.

The floor of the room was dirty- I don't think the cleaners ever wash it. During our 3 night stay, they didn't change our sheets. And they for some reason removed the container for my contact lenses that I had placed near the sink in the bathroom...

Staff overall was slow, arrogant almost rude.

The food in the restaurant was horrible and we ended up not even having the breakfast that was included.

We stayed here for 3 nights and it suited our needs well. We had originally travelled to Malapascua to stay in huts on a beach and relax on a quiet beach. The original place we had booked misled us with regards to what the room offered which was a shame so after a terrible nights sleep we walked up the beach to find Malapascua Legend. The staff were immediately welcoming and found us a room that suited our needs in no time. The room was large, clean and the airconditioning worked well. The large pool in the centre of the premises came in handy as the beach was quite busy in the afternoons and the low tide made it difficult to swim after 3pm. So we could snorkel and swim with our son thoroughout the day all over the island and spend the late afternoons by the pool relaxing. The place is well set up for families and they provide many extra services that other small hotels on malapasuca do not provide. Malapascua Legend provided a 20Ltr container of water in the room for guests to use for drinking and brushing your teeth and provided a hot water urn in the restaurant to use to make coffee and tea in your room. Our room wasn't cleaned the whole time of our visit, but perhaps you need to ask to have your room cleaned. It wasn't ideal but didn't take away from our stay.

Room Tip: we got a room at the front so we could have a view of the beach from our verandah.

It is definetly one of the best hotels on the island. If you travel with kids, this one has a beautiful swimming pool that kids will love. Food as all over the philippines is quite average, but the people are very friendly, You can even consider leaving the kids with the hotel staff while you go diving.

I have only eaten in the restaurant. We ordered sandwiches and coke, and waited, and waited. The order was lost so we reminded them and they brought out the wrong drinks. While this was happening they served the people one table over, the waiter managed to smash the bowl of "caesar salad" on the table, the people being served were very understanding but complained that it wasn't a Caesar salad and requested to change their order. Later 3 dishes turned up on their table much to their surprise. Our sandwiches and chips (french fries) eventually turned up, but to our surprise the chips were completely tasteless and I'm fairly sure had nothing to do with potato. All in all a funny experience, but not one I'll repeat.

second time to visit the place, the first time was June 2012 and the latest October 2012... both times we stayed at their Presidential Room # 1...it felt like coming home...

The beach, the island life, the locals and the staff all made us feel welcome, although the drive can be quite daunting, about 2 1/2 to 3 hours from the city, plus a 45 minute boat ride via the resorts private outrigger, you are well-rewarded when you get there...

being beach lovers, this has become our default long weekend getaway place...

food is good, maybe 6/10... plenty of good restaurants also around the area, snorkeling ( we have 3 kids 13, 10 and 8 years old ) and island hopping are the main attractions...

the only minor drawback we can say is the music the resort sometimes plays outdoors at night, i understand that some people may love pop music, but we'd actually rather listen to the sound of the waves...

we'll definitely be back again !!

It's a breathtaking moment as you approach the white sand of Bounty Beach by boat, travel weary and itching to feel the sand between your toes.

The island is beautiful, great reef, lovely people and a few good places to eat. The pool at Legends is huge and always fresh and clean. Our room was fairly basic but clean and we felt well looked after with friendly and well-intentioned staff (if a bit clueless sometimes...).

The food isn't great though with lots of things out if stock, much better to est elsewhere.

Diving with the thresher sharks unforgettable although please listen to your dive master when you go - we saw lots of people stressing the sharks with invasive body positions and camera flashes. It's a fine line between appreciating these special creatures and ruining their habitat and interfering with their lives to their detriment.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Malapascua Island is situated two and a half hours away by car and four hours away by bus from the city of Cebu. A barangay of the town of Daanbantayan, Malapascua Island takes pride in its world class diving spots and pristine white sand beaches. It is widely referred by locals as the "Boracay of Cebu." As a diving destination, Malapascua Island has become known for its beautiful coral gardens and excellent local dive spots, as well as further out sites like Gato Island, Monad Shoal, and Kemod Shoal. Monad Shoal is an underwater plateau where thresher sharks and manta rays can be seen on a regular basis. The town's name is derived from two Spanish words, "mal" and "pascua", which translated in English means, "bad" and "Easter" or bad Christmas. According to locals, the Spaniards named the island that way after they arrived there on a stormy Christmas. Malapascua Island is a promise of a great dive and a relaxing beach experience, making it a popular travel destination for local and foreign tourists alike. ... more   less
