“Excellent stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2012

I stayed here for a week and like many other reviewers was very happy with the resort . It is a short (two minute) walk to the beach but what it lacks in sea view it makes up for in other things. The staff are lovely, very friendly and go out of their way to help you with any requests. The rooms are clean and well presented with a range of options to suit different budgets. The resort has free internet/wifi and you can make free international calls to a number of countries - great if you are away from home for a long time. There is also a swimming pool, table tennis, pool table and movies. The breakfasts, included with the room rates are great, I really liked the stuffed french toast. The only improvement I would like to see made is more vegetarian options on the menu.

I also dived with the resort and really enjoyed the experience all of the equipment is brand new and Tony and Lee were very friendly and helpful.

One final point I know a previous reviewer mentionned creepy men in the village (this almost put me off booking) I am a solo female traveller and I felt perfectly safe at Purple Snapper and on Malapascua, the locals were not creepy and were very friendly.

The owner Chuck is a very nice and attentive man. He will make things happen without any hesitation and with a smile. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. They also have BP rooms. Purple snapper is quiet new and they are still improving things althought atm it is already great. They have a swimming pool (only 2 on the island).
They also have a dive shop. When we were there they just opened like a day or 2. The instructor/manager (Paul) is a down to earth guy with lots of experience. He will listen and help whenever he can. Nothing is too much.
Breakfast is great, actually all the food is awesome and the qualtiy and taste is one of the best on the island. They get their stuff in Cebu where other hotels get it in bogo or maya if i'm right. Also they bake their own bread!!!
Honestly I cant think about anything negative, maybe hard to find when you just arrive and don't know the island. But than again just look for their signs.

Just completed our stay and were happy with our choice to select this resort. The staff were great, very friendly and helpful. An example of this was them contacting us via text while traveling up by bus to check if we wanted their boat to pick us up at Maya.

The resort was well equipped with table tennis, pool table and wide screen mac TV with a huge selection of movies, I think I may have got the staff addicted to the Jason Bourne trilogy. We made good use of all these facilities including the good wifi connection.

The resort is also well maintained and cleaned regularly including the pool on a daily basis. The rooms were a good size, bright and clean, also the bathroom was well equipped and good size.

Malapascua gets hot during the day and it was a real bonus to have a fresh water pool available to get back too and cool down.

The only negative which was quite minor and did not concern me was that the clean room sign was ignored once, it's possible we may have put it out a little late at 11am. I know that the staff would have been happy enough to clean it but I was on holiday mood and to lazy to inform them and it was not a big deal the room had been the day cleaned before.

One thing that annoyed me but the Purple Snapper cannot be held directly responsible because the issue was over 100 meters away. There was a 1 liter bottle of San Miguel that lay broken on the side of the footpath as you leave the beach to make your way to the Purple Snapper. Chances on stepping on this are slim, but quite possible especially in the evenings when the lighting is poor and its not a good look for such a lovely island. I noticed this on the second day and it was still there on the forth day which was our last day.
It seemed that this was no ones responsibility if you take the drunken bum out of the equation, the one who left the broken bottle there in the first place. Not Malapascua Legends, who's building was next to bottle, not the local village who are on the other side and who's young children walk along this pathway every day and not Purple Snapper who's first time arrivals need to walk past the bottle on the way to the resort.

HEY PEOPLE OF MALAPASCUA YOU HAVE A BEAUTIFUL ISLAND PLEASE LOOK AFTER IT AND KEEP IT SAFE AND CLEAN!
(Note if it is your visitors creating this sort of mess there are some sharking feeding areas which would be a more appropriate place to house them)

To summarize the Purple Snapper Resort was great value with great staff and we were very happy with our choice to stay there.

The hospitality was some of the best I have had while on vacation. The management went out of their way to make the stay enjoyable. They arranged a snorkeling trip for us, ensured we had extra bedding to accommodate our children, and by timing and coincidence helped us out after our stay by showing us the ropes in Cebu City. Chef Ian’s food is the islands hidden secret, more on par with an upscale restaurant. The kids loved the pool table and the swimming pool when we needed a break from the sun and salt. A little off the beaten path, this gem is well worth finding.

I don't quite understand all the positive reviews for this village hotel, nor why their prices are about the same as the hotels that are better situated by the beach.

Pros: The rooms are very clean. The gardens appear loved and maintained well. The hot water was very hot (and adjustable). The bathroom and rooms are generous sized. There is a lovely pool, ping-pong table, and billiards table for your entertainment (though it appears only the staff partook). Each room has a foot bath at the entrance to wash off the sand before you enter your room (nice touch!). Free wi-fi.

Cons: Location - it is smack in the middle of the village - no where near the beach. The island is very friendly, but is also quite poor and there are loads of dodgey men lingering about to make one feel unsafe. I especially DO NOT recommend this for any FEMALE guests. Walking back the hotel in the dark surrounded by creepy local men is not idyllic. The hotel is also surrounded by HUNDREDS of loud ROOSTERS , who cock-a-doodle-doo all day and all night. Very loudly. The included breakfast is terrible - nescafe, dry pancakes (with no syrup or butter or sugar), and eggs swimming in a cup of palm oil. The manager can be a bit creepy - when I checked in, he held his private parts with one hand during the entire conversation while trying to convince me to go diving with him (even though I had already arranged with a proper dive shop). The wi-fi works best in the restaurant/lounge -- but unfortunately with a large TV always on it also serves as the all-day loitering area for the staff and locals -- so not a very comfy place to surf the net.

Stay at one of the beach hotels instead - they cost the same or just a couple $ more, but are very safe and quiet (no rooster noises!) and relaxing to have a sea breeze.

We appreciate the reviewer taking her time to write a review of the resort.

We have received good reviews from previous guests and for those we are also grateful. We give our best effort in giving our guests and enjoyable stay in Malapascua and those previous review are testament of that.

Although her review is written with the best intentions for other travelers there are a number of things mentioned that we believe need to be addressed.

*Room Prices

Our resort is located 100 from the beach. And due to that we have provided other amenities that are not available in other beachfront resorts. We have a pool table, ping pong table, dart board at the restaurant, a wide screen computer to watch movies in, wi-fi and we are one of the only 2 resorts in the island that has a pool. All of these are properly maintained for the guests' enjoyment. As a low to mid-range priced hotel on the island we provide more amenities than any other resorts on the island with the same price range.

*Billiard Table

As mentioned above, are amenities are for the guests' enjoyment. We allow out staff to use them on their free time. The reviewer may have seen them as the only one using it however I did not expect her to stay at the resort all day just to see who's using the billiard table.

*Location

We are 100 meters from the beach. Our website mentions that and we have not mislead anyone about out location. It takes at only least a 2-3 minute walk to get to the Bounty Beach. Is the resort on the beach? No. Is it far from the beach? It depends on what you make of a 2-3 minute walk.

Yes the resort is in one of the villages. We do not have to capacity nor the intention to move the locals out of their village. Like the reviewer we are also guests on this island we know how friendly they are and despite their poverty we have seen how nice and harmless they are. Which brings us to the next point:

*Safety

Since the opening of the resort, there have been no cases of any guest, men women or children harmed by any "Dodgey", "Creepy" local men. It is a small island and as mentioned poverty stricken. The locals are aware of the value of tourism to the island and it's people. Any incident harming any guests are/will not be taken lightly.

There are a few lamp post ont he island. The resort makes it a point to keep the front lights open until 11pm. We also encourage our guests to bring torches when they go out at night.

*Creepy Manager

I wish the reviewer mentioned the name of the Manager she was speaking with for us to verify the incident. Such incident will not be tolerated by the owner. It is unlikely that she was speaking to the Manager of the resort because:

a) He is NOT a licensed diver.
b) The resort does not have it's own dive shop.
c) We have ties with dive shops who book rooms for their guests.

To try to take away business from our partners is counter productive. Our manager is also aware of that.

*Roosters

Yes there are roosters outside the resort. But NO, they are not in hundreds.

Malapascua like any other island has it's own culture. On Sundays there are cockfights and for those to happen there have to be roosters. Yes they do create noise but as fellow guests to this island we respect their culture. We understand that the noise in not to everyone's liking. We wish we can do something about that. For now it is either killing a culture or earplugs.

*Breakfast is Terrible

Our previous reviews say otherwise however we cannot rectify the problem she had with her breakfast now. Had it been brought up when she was at the resort we would have been very willing to replace her breakfast for her, to her liking. We apologize her breakfast was not served with butter or syrup. We would have provided them to her had she asked.

*Restaurant: Lounge area for locals and staff.

Our restaurant has an iMac that we use to show movies. We usually screen movies at 3pm and 9pm or whenever a guest would like to watch a movie. The only locals allowed to watch movies are guests of the resort or the restaurant. Our staff is only allowed to watch on their free time if a movie is already screening.

We hope this response helps future guests of Malapascua in deciding where to stay.

First we would like to thank you for 14 days of a lovely stay.
After been looking on 7 different resort we got a very good feeling when we found this place. The place is not on the beach but the high-quality service and the friendly and polite staff makes up for it. They really care about their guest and make shore everyone having a great stay. Really good value to.
After a day on the beach or after a day of diving you can go back to the resort and take a swim in the pool, play some ping pong/pool game or just watch a movie on the super big Apple computer in the restaurant. You can also call for free to almost every country in the world and there is free Wi-FI.
The food is really good here and for breakfast we recommend you the banana pancake (make shore Ian the one making them), it’s delicious. If it’s lunch or dinner time and you would like to have pizza, burgers or pasta this is probably the best place on the island!
Rooms are basic, clean, nice and there are no mosquitoes. Just so you know you will have the cocks noise all day and the karaoke in the evening but that’s how Malapascua is.
We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back.

Purple Snapper really was a HUGE step up from the previous place I stayed on the island. The staff is very friendly and they make you feel comfortable. The restaurant has a pool table and they recently added a ping pong table next to the swimming pool.

Before I say anything about the room I have to say that the restaurant alone is pretty amazing. The pizzas and especially the burgers are delicious (served with herbed homemade fries!) I like the simple menu anyway over the long ones they tend to have around. The food is reasonably priced. Also the breakfast (which was included in the room price) is better than the average. You choose your poison from their breakfast menu (f.ex. American is bacon, eggs and pancakes) and it includes bottomless coffee, tea, milo AND juice.

The room was mosquito free and spacious. Clean western toilet with hot shower was icing on the cake. Room was clean, as were the premises. They keep the garden nice and clean, the rooms even have a small pool outside where you can rinse your feet from sand before going in.

Wifi speed was excellent for an island connection and the possibility to watch movies in the restaurant was nice. There are plugs available in the restaurant so no matter if you sit there for hours with your computer.

I also have to mention, that the resort has an excellent professional photographer on staff, if you ever wanted to get those perfect holiday/honeymoon/whatever shots. The same guy took us to see cockfighting, which happens every Sunday. Good fun!

The resort just opened in November 2010, but I have no doubt in my mind that it will be very popular in no time. They just do everything just a little bit better than the rest. I really felt the enthusiasm they have of making the place even nicer.

The only downside really is the ongoing roodsters and karaoke, but there's no escape from that in South-East Asia anyway. Bring earplugs if you have trouble sleeping.

PS. Here's an example of some fun we had one afternoon at the pool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoWG7UNb18E
