“At home @ Tepanee Beach Resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

It was a wonderfully spent week in Malapascua most especially because of our so-called "Home" for that entire week. The room we booked is decently priced and ideal for up to three occupants. With regards to how we like the room itself, well, we like it a lot... ;) We also love the restaurant by the beach coz they serve tasty breakfast! Not to mention the very friendly and all-smiles staffs! And of course, the highlight of our stay is feeding. In this regard, we couldn't be happier with all the Italian cuisine we had at the "Amihan Restaurant" c/o Chef Victorio ;) For the entire week of our Malapascua getaway, we had nothing but the feel of home. Tepanee resort is definitely highly recommended by us to those who not only wanted to have a comfy and beautiful place to stay but as well as heavenly deliciously served Italian cuisine!!!

Room Tip: If possible, request for the rooms with the veranda facing the private beach.

We arrived in malapascua a month after yolanda hit the place. A lot of the resorts were badly hit save one, tepanee beach resort. The resort offered a native feel with bamboo cottages and surprisingly sturdy cogon roofs. The private beach is breathtaking, with the rock formations, white sand and blue waters, even better than bounty beach. The staff and even the owner were friendly and very accommodating. I would surely tell my friends about it.

Tepanee is in one word fantastic! We arrived two weeks after the Typhoon Yolanda. Nevertheless, the atmosphere was still brilliant, staff helpful and the Ocean view still stunning. Luxury stand-alone bungalows with comformtable bed, hot shower, WIFI, plenty of space. This is however not what made this visit so special: this was realised by the owners Andrea & Silvia and Vittorio, their friend + chef from Amihan (closeby restaurant, best chef on the Island for sure). They make you feel at home, appreciated and treat all guests in the much appreciated personal way without intruding in your holiday. Always helpful and cheerful. Andrea, Silvia, Vittorio: thank you so much for making this week in Malapascua unforgetable!
By the way: the food is exceptionally good! All three also can give great tips on diving, we chose Thresher Shark Divers and in our opinion the best Dive school on the island.

In addition, the ladies providing the massage did a fantastic job, both my girlfriend and myself thought it was very good. I like it quite firm, and still I fell asleep. Private beach is also a big plus. Great value for money, especially given the high quality standard.
Drop-off from the mainland is on the private beach, just great!

Room Tip: Ocean view is worth the money!

Back a few days ago from an incredible six days on Malapascua. I had decided I couldn't sit on the sidelines without helping in person, and Silvia at Tepanee encouraged me to come and said she'd have a room for me. Best decision I've taken in a very long time. Andrea was very kind, and offered me a room at only 1,000 PHP, to help save our resources for the those who suffered from the typhoon.

Though some of Tepanee's cottages and rooms were badly damaged, most suffered only minor damage which has already been repaired by Tepanee's impressive staff team. Sure, many of the trees are badly damaged, but the view of the sea is as lovely as ever !! Tepanee's own bar/restaurant, by their private beach (less sand than before, but still enough to get into the water painlessly), is open, and the food is very tasty. Angelina's next door is also open, and just fantastic !!

Luckily, the Thresher Sharks are still at their sites, and other deep dives are also intact. The amazingly white and long Bounty Beach is as gorgeous to swim on as ever, and resorts and diveshops along it are slowly getting back to working order. Places like Exotic and Evolution have been diving for a week already, most of the others expected to re-open by mid-December.

Basically, Malapascua is still a great place to come diving and hang out on the beach. The added attraction should be that now your presence is more important than ever, as many tourists have cancelled, imagining that there are riots and dead bodies around... In reality, though 99% of the population lost their roofs in the typhoon, about the same proportion, 6 days later, were already walking around calmly with huge smiles on their faces. These resilient people are so relax and joyful, they have an awful lot to teach all of us - this may well be the best souvenir you will bring back home.

For those of you who like to get involved, there are lots of relief initiatives on the island. My favourite is Anna Reed (contact her via Facebook), who is setting up "Rebuild Malapascua", rebuild islanders' houses and set up a badly needed medical clinic. Other good initiatives include projects through Divelink (ask for Anna Aposa or Gary Cases), who have projects to rebuild the school, and also to increase awareness of the importance of protecting the sharks and the reefs.

Please go to Malapascua, it's a trip you won't regret, and will never forget.

Room Tip: The Deluxe AC cottages have amazing views, and more space - worth it if you can stretch the budget a...

I was there from 4th- to 17th November just in time for Hiyan/Yolanda typhoon. I survived to the scary experience thanks to Andrea and Silvia the owners of Tepanee Beach Resort - they were taking care of us since the beginning, power, water, food, smiles and warm atmosphere were never missing. They were pampering us even with espresso and cappuccino for breakfast!! This is the situation were you really see the soul of the people. My room was MANILYN - all the rooms have staff names I love the idea!
The resort is so cool and quite, with a private beach.Local people part of the staff is so lovely and friendly, they smile all the time. Vittorio (the chef) prepared a very tasty menu with a large choice of pasta, meat and fish, delicious.
Tepanee is the perfect (and safe) place for vacation alone, with friends or partners.
I will be back soon to complete my diving package and Vittorio menu tasting ;-)

Room Tip: plenty of choice: if you like a romantic place MANILYN, if you like the quite shade stay near to the...

We arrived on Malapascua 2 days before Typhoon Haiyan hit the island. Initially, we weren't booked into stay at Tepanee this time around as we were on a tight budget so had initially organised a room elsewhere. After reading about the typhoon on the island we decided that our bamboo hut wasn't the safest place to experience the typhoon, so booked into Tepanee for the night before the typhoon as it seemed a safer place to spend the night and the following day, hoping to ride out the storm. The rest... as they say... is history. The typhoon reaped complete destruction of Malapascua Island during 5 hours we will never forget on the 8th November.

Our room took some heavy damage in terms of windows/doors/water damage, but structurally it was sound, with the roof remaining - something I didn't see anywhere else on the island. Not all the rooms were affected, some received absolutely no damage, and others received varying degrees of damage, but again no structural issues. The grounds of the resort were a chaotic scene in the immediate aftermath of the typhoon, most trees had been ripped out of the ground or snapped, there was debris everywhere.

From the first moments of the typhoon dying down, the owners of Tepanee, Andrea and Silvia were scouting the resort checking the extent of the damage and it was clear that this had been a storm of unprecedented power. Their resort and the hard work of many years had been extensively damaged within a few hours. Having stayed at the attached sister resort Logon for 5 months last year we can assure you it was a stunning resort prior to the typhoon.

After all the guests had emerged unscathed and everyone had gathered in one place, the incredible hospitality of the owners began. Over the next few days, the owners fed us, supplied us with plentiful water, and just showed an overwhelming amount of generosity. We stayed in Tepanee after the typhoon for 6 days, with a small group of people, helping to clear the debris, chop trees, and generally do what we could to help.

I can safely say having been there after a few days that the resort is fully operational. Most of the rooms were looking exactly as they did prior to the typhoon, the beach restaurant was operational and serving delicious food, and all the usual amenities were functioning; air conditioning/hot water etc. etc. The resorts restaurant which was newly opened this year named Amihan, was badly damaged during the typhoon and needed some work, however I’m sure that this will be up and running shortly.

The resort is good to go, so don’t worry about any upcoming reservations, go to Malapascua and have a great time at Tepanee!

The week before the typhoon hit Cebu and also the lovely Malapascua, we spend some time on the island. First of all..Malapascua is such a great place! You'll love it.
Tepanee is located in a quiet area )but still close to the main beach area) and has its own private beach and massage service (really nice). And good coffee! We stayed in a fan room (room 3). This type of accommodation might be the best value for money (1500 php) since it has a balcony with direct oceanview, a mosquito net which give you plenty of space when you're in bed and did I already mentioned the amazing view?
Mention that there is no hot water in the cottage. The water is also a bit smelly..but the cottage and bathroom is clean.
There is no breakfast included but they provide it at the beachbar. We actually went to the 'town' at GingGing..but don't know if it survived the typhoon.

So, we really enjoyed Tepanee and Malapascua. Thanks for the great stay!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Malapascua is a gem of an island where our dream came true. Ours is an intimate, friendly resort that will give you a holiday to remember. Tepanee stands on a small hill that rises up from Logon beach and our territory goes down to our own private sandy beach, from where it's possible to admire breathtaking sunsets in an area secluded from the rest of the island and where we placed beach umbrellas, sunbeds, a gazebo for massages and our lovely Chiringuito at Sunset Beach Bar & Restaurant. Historically, the concept for our resort followed a philosophy of low environment impact. Most of the building materials are natural and local: wood, bamboo and stones used for the main structures, roofs made of a typical straw named kogon. The buildings are almost invisible from the ocean, even if many are built right on the seaside. The name TEPANEE comes from the Polinesyan name of frangipani: a tropical tree that produces the flowers printed in these pages. Many tepanees grow on our small hill, flowering in different colours: during the blooming season their fragrance diffuses in the air. Opened on December 8, 2008, Tepanee in the beginning was consisted of 6 independent double cottages and one building of two storeyes with 4 triple rooms. We have grown, and can now offer you: 3 Deluxe Aircon Cottage: superb ocean view (perhaps the best in Malapascua); independent buildings with aircon, ceiling fan, en-suite bathroom, hot shower, minibar, safety box, 24h electricity, balcony with sofa, daily cleaning, double bed with option for one or two extra single beds. 8 Aircon Cottages: independent buildings with aircon, ceiling fan, en-suite bathroom, hot shower, minibar, safety box, 24h electricity, balcony with sofa, daily cleaning, double bed with option for one extra single bed. 4 Aircon Rooms: 3 rooms are double and 1 room has two single beds; private entrance, aircon, ceiling fan, en-suite bathroom, hot shower, minibar, safety box, 24h electricity, balcony with sofa, daily cleaning, double bed with option for one extra single bed. 4 Fan Cottages: with an amazing ocean view; independent buildings with ceiling fan, en-suite bathroom, 24h electricity, balcony with sofa, daily cleaning, double bed with option for one extra single bed; no aircon, shower at room temperature. We provide for the wifi in the public areas (beach, bar, restaurant) and in some of the rooms and cottages. Please, note that we are in a remote island and the service sometime may be slow or discontinuous. Since December 2012, you can eat and drink right next to our private beach, at the Chiringuito at Sunset Beach Bar & Restaurant, where we serve breakfast and lunch, snacks, drinks and natural fruit juices, cocktails, with soft background music in the background. In May 2013, we opened our new Amihan Bar & Restaurant, in a panoramic position on the hill at the new entrance of Tepanee: we are serving the amazing Mediterranean cuisine as well as some other dish and beyond that Amihan had already become renowned for. Some practical information We accept credit cards payments: Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB (bank transaction charges apply). We also accept cash payments in Pesos, Euros and US Dollars. Malapascua does not have any normal bank, ATMs, official exchange bureaus nor post offices. Therefore it's not possible to get hold of cash and the nearest bank is in Bogo, a town that is about one hour by bus from Maya pier (that is about half an hour by boat from Malapascua). We recommend that you arrive in Malapascua with enough Pesos, the local money, for your stay here. The nearest airport is the Mactan Cebu International Airport of Cebu City (IATA code: CEB). From the airport there are about 140 kms of paved road (all totally cleared since Typhoon Yolanda) to get to the port of Maya, in the far north of the island of Cebu. Maya is 8 kms far from Malapascua by sea. Tepanee organizes transfers at any time by private van and boat, reducing the travel time to about 3 and a half hours in all: our boats arrive and depart from our private beach, located inside the Tepanee Beach Resort area. There is a bus service and public ferries that allow, in about 5 and a half hours, to go from Cebu City to Malapascua. The bus service runs 24/7 and some buses have air conditioning: there is no official timetable, but the rides are frequent. The ferries operate from Maya to Malapascua from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and from Malapascua to Maya from 6:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Departures are every 30 minutes, but only if the minimum number of passengers is reached. The people of Malapascua are very kind and friendly. Their ability to smile through the losses they have suffered in the typhoon is nothing short of amazing, and inspiring. The islanders do have customs and traditions that can be different from ours. To show proper respect for them, please don't go around the villages just wearing only a bathing suit: please wear at least shorts and a T-shirt. Furthermore, topless bathing and nudism are forbidden even on beaches, even though no one is likely to complain to you. Tepanee Beach Resort is located in a non-flat area: from the reception to the rooms and the beach on the back there are stairs to go up and down. The steps are wide and low, but they do exist: please be aware of this when choosing our hotel for your stay. We do not offer the beach towels service, as we are trying to conserve natural resources: the fresh water on the island comes from a limited sub-soil water table, and the laundering of beach towels every day would contribute to unsustainable levels of water consumption. We do not provide hair-dryers. We do not have tv in the rooms. Check-in is possible from 2:00 PM. Check-out must be completed by 12:00 noon. Reception is open from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM. ... more   less
