“Relaxed seaside holiday in Calabria”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

Our family of 5 stayed here in early to mid-June, and it was perfect for the relaxed family vacation we were looking for. Since this was low season, we pretty much had the pool to ourselves. The locals vacation here mainly in August, so if you're looking for a quiet seaside hotel to spend time together as a couple or family, this is a great place. They had just opened the pool, and the temperature was very pleasant in June. The staff were very welcoming, the food was amazing, and the views of the sea from our balcony were beautiful. We were picked up from the train station by their free shuttle. Breakfast was a continental style self-serve buffet, and lunch and supper were sit-down meals with several choices from their menu, which specialized in fish and pasta dishes. Portions were generous. None of the entertainment had really started yet, as there were so few guests at this time of year. One of the waiters and one of the managers spoke English; the other staff spoke little English. Free lounge chairs were provided on the beach, which is a combination of sand, gravel, and pebbles. Guests have access to free bicycles, tennis courts, gym with a lovely view of the sea, and free wifi. There was a grassy trail behind the tennis court that led up the hill. Nature lovers will enjoy seeing the diversity of wildflowers and butterflies, as well as the panoramic view from the hill.

In the hotel we had everything we wanted for a perfect holiday : parking, swimming pool, in one minute at the beach, a very good restaurant, a cozy bar. The bedrooms are quiet with a beautiful view. The staff is very friendly.
We have been here for the first time 5 years ago for a wedding party and this was incredibly unforgettable. After this experience we returned 3 times and this year we are happy to stay in this hotel again.
é un albergo ideale per la vacanza : con piscina, una buona cucina, camere tranquille, un bar accogliente, il personale gentile,
é anche un albergo ideale per una festa matrimoniale !!!!!!!!

Stayed at this hotel for only one night and should have stayed longer. This hotel is a seaside hotel and really caters for full boarders as there is not much competition around. We were given an excellent room with sea views, which also had a good balcony. WiFi could have been better.
Breakfast was good though not really catering for western tastes. Service was good. If you are visiting Amantea, look no further for accomodation

We stayed at Hotel La Tonnara the last week of July, so we had fantastic weather, we also had a lot of fun. This hotel has an entertainment team that is there from mid-morning the again in the evening. They kept us all dancing, excercising, playing Bochi and even musical chairs. VERY ENTERTAINING!!! As for the hotel staff they were great..... even helping us book train ticket, they all very helpful and happy to oblige in any way. The breakfast menu was pretty good with lots of variety, though no hot food.

Room Tip: We asked for a room with a sea view and we had a great view from our room

WHat can I say about this wonderful hotel and place? I could say wonderful, fantastic, exceptional, but could be never enougn. The superior service, the attention to details, the incredible fresh fish food (and of course from you coming from countries where you do not even know how to cook an egg this could be weird...), the people from the fun team, the surprises in every moment of theday, are part of the superior service and organization this place has. It's perfect for familis, cuoples, and anyone else willing to taste the smell of perfection.

Room Tip: Superiori room are really perfect, even if you have a small baby (lessa than 1 year...)

3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2012

Stayed at La Tonnara on last night of our wonderful holiday in Calabria. Its not an area for International visitors. The beaches north of Lamezia airport are not great - grey stone beaches and large bolders on the sea bed make it a very uncomfortable beach to use.
La Tonnara's superior rooms are huge - lovely surprise. For an Italian hotel, its unusual. Our twin room had a huge double bed and a single - beds extremely comfortable, possibly new mattresses. The large well equipped bathrooms are lovely white, clean and sparkling with power massage shower, etc. Plenty of towels, pool towels, dressing gown, etc. The view looks out over the sea which is a lovely aspect and the balconies are very well equipped. Sky TV was a bonus and actually worked. Hotel calls itself a 4 star but you get the feeling its a well equipped 3 star e.g mini bar was terribly disappointing, contained some bottles of water and a few cans of coke. On our arrival at 2 pm, we were told there was a wedding and the pool was shut for a couple of hours. This was unbelievably annoying - it was our last day of holiday, flying home the next day and our two children were chomping at the bit to jump into the nearest pool.
The restaurant was closed for lunch due to the wedding and we had to cross the road to the snack hut on the beach (part of La Tonnara) and they found us a sandwich which was pretty disgusting. The beach was grey stones and scorching to walk on and quite a distance to the sea. The beach attendant lacked any sense of humour as did the majority of staff in and around the hotel, especially the pool when we finally got to use it. We were told rather abruptly at 5.45 pm that we had to vacate the pool again due to the wedding party coming back out to use it. We were also told the following day that another wedding party would be limiting the pool use yet again. Great business for the hotel, not great for their individual travellers!
The gentleman at reception (who might have been the Manager) was very amiable and appeared nice but the remainder of the staff were unfriendly and abrupt. No one bothered to help us with our large heavy suitcases either in or out of the hotel/car. It was also rather uncomfortable to be walking round in shorts and swimwear when you are surrounded by a wedding party in their best attire. We will say that the breakfasts were a nice surprise with fresh fruit (yes, finally a hotel has grasped this great idea) and beautiful baked cakes.
If you drive into the historical centre of Amantea, about 10 minutes up on to the cliff, you will find the one and only restaurant Clarissa (part of a hotel). We had an exquisite meal in its walled garden, white tables clothes, crystal glasses and live music. This made our stay.

Room Tip: Superior rooms overlooking the sea are absolutely worth it. Dont stand on the balcony naked thinkin...

Very nice sea view and spacious, clean rooms. Location quite in the middle of nowhere. A la carte dinner in the restaurant not interesting, food very average and service ok ( if you speak Italian or German), but do not bother to ask any recommendations for wines etc. Be ready for self -service, room has by far the worst minibar I' ve ever seen, one bottle of beer and a couple of Cokes and no indication of room service anywhere. Wireless internet worked, but not with the instructions we got in the beginning at the reception. In this hotel be ready for self-service and language showers: you get what you need if you are ready to go and ask and serve yourself - but do not expect to get service as in 4star hotel. Service level is much closer to 2 stars.

Room Tip: Ask the room not close to pool area, this end is occationally noisy.
