“A great trip!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2014

We had a great time at El Dorado Casitas Royale. We originally just booked the regular El Dorado Royale, but we were offered to upgrade for $100 a night and we decided to do it, and it was worth it. The Casitas are more private with larger rooms and a more peaceful beach and private pool. The meals were good, but I wish we would have known we had to reserve reservations at the better restaurants in advance. I would have booked the reservation before I arrived. Because we were only there for four nights, they turned us down for several of the restaurants we wanted to go do. I find this very frustrating because A) we spent thousands of dollars to go there and should be able to eat where we want B) more importantly, the restaurants were not busy. I saw tons of open tables and they said they "had an hour wait list", yet the restaurant closed in an hour. One of the restaurants sat us after we complained, but again the tables they had "reserved" never filled up and there were empty tables all around us. Make sure you make reservations in advance, and I would recommend the El Dorado revises their policy and makes it more efficient. If they say there is "no room" at a restaurant, then there better be no room. They should allow everyone to go to any restaurant as long as they are least ONE day in advance. I shouldnt have to book four days in advance for an all inclusive resort. We also did the Lomas Travel horseback riding and snorkeling in Maroma, which was a great time but a long day. It could have also been organized a little better. Only do this if you dont mind being out from 8am until 7pm, with at least 5 hours of "dead" time. They were two different trips, so maybe you want to do each on a separate day so you dont have to wait in between for the next one to start. Regardless, the snorkeling and horseback riding was very fun. Overall the food was great, the drinks were great, the rooms were beautiful, the beaches were beautiful, and the staff was super nice. A special thank you to Cesar at Bar 27 at the Casitas. He was a great bartender and a great guy, he really took the time to talk to you and make sure you were having a good trip. Lastly, thanks to Jennifer at the Tropical Travelers travel agency who did a fantastic job finding us this great trip and making it easy to travel!

Room Tip: The Casitas is worth the investment

If you've already booked, you're in for a treat. If you're doing your research, this one deserves serious consideration!

We had a wonderful 10 day stay as a party of 2 couples, in Casitas 28 and 29, travelling with Thomson/First Choice from the UK. The rooms are spacious, well appointed and have everything you would expect. The gardens and grounds are immaculate, and constantly being attended to. The swim ups and pool areas are lovely, landscaped and clean, and we also enjoyed the beach beds. The impressive hotel greenhouse is worth a visit.

But what really made the trip was the staff - everyone including concierges, maids, gardeners, restaurant staff, pool bar and beach bar staff were polite, friendly, and nothing was too much trouble. I jokingly told our concierge that 'there was a tiny fly in my ointment' (my WiFi had expired!) and the poor man looked horrified! Special thanks to Isac, Maggy, Irving and Daniel.

The food is wonderful - we tried most restaurants, and especially enjoyed the Santa Fe, Cocotal, Kampai and both Italian restaurants. Nice touches include infused water, a chocolate fountain at breakfast (really!) and the care taken with our vegetarian companions.

We used the Spa (gorgeous) and also the jet skis (great fun), snorkelled off the beach and also visited the on-site turtle hatchery every morning in the hope of seeing hatchlings (no joy).

Negatives? I really have to split hairs here - the rooms can be quite dark, so a torch is handy when looking for things! We did experience large groups of very noisy people around the pool areas, so relocated to the beach or another casita area when this was a problem. The beach isn't the most pictuesque, and there is work underway to protect the reef, which involves floating large concrete blocks and placing them along the beach approx 200 feet out in the water, so there is occasional boat and generator noise, but this wasn't a problem.

We did a few trips out, and recommend snorkelling with the turtles at Akumal, swimming in a cenote, visiting Chitzen Itza, Coba and Tulum. We also swam with whale sharks, a once in a lifetime thrill. Please also see separate review for Your Private Tour.

Highly recommended and we would definitely consider a return visit.

I booked a 3 night stay in order to get engaged. This was a very nice place with some very nice touches but not exactly cheap. I have no problem paying for what you get but this report needs to correct some flaws before it can be rated excellent. Upon arrival you are treated very well. The champagne upon arrival is a very nice touch and made my now Fiancé feel very special. The selection of pillows and aromatherapy was excellent. Very nice touch. The swim up room with the outdoor shower was fantastic. So where does the problem come in.....?. Well two of the restaurants that require reservations were unavailable all three nights. One issue is that only the concierge can get you the reservation and he was gone at 5Pm. We lost one evening on that only ( We also walked into one of the restaurants seeing if we could make a reservation for the next day. I have to point out that the restaurant was NOT full at all. Plenty of open tables so I don't know what the reservation game is but they do not fill up) Our flight was delayed so when we tried to have dinner at 945 pm the Thai restaurant refused to seat us saying that they had no tables and that they were closing in 15 minutes. Well first of all there were at least two empty tables several feet away from us which were clean and ready for seating, and second..if you close in 15 minutes then you aren't closed! The second restaurant Jo Jos about 40 feet away stated they would seat us but would only serve us nachos since the kitchen was closing in 15 minutes. This was completely unacceptable considering the prices we paid and the reputation the resort is attempting to keep. At this level I don't think simple things should have been met with "I'm very sorry but no"...which was given to us several times throughout our stay, Another issue is the MINI BAR... Just be aware that there is no liquor at the min bar.. Only beer, soda and water. This was not indicated anywhere that I read prior to going there so just an FYI. The swim up bars close a little too early as far as I'm concerned. I believe it was 6 PM. The biggest disappointment...I paid for a private dinner on the beach at which point I planned to propose. My girlfriend loves Mariachi's and I attempted to book live Mariachi's as a surprise during dinner. I tried to do this through the concierge who did try to help but I was again ultimately met with a "I'm sorry but no". I was told the price which was very costly and I still agreed to pay but the resort would only allow their own Mariachi's on the resort as well and any type of live music. Again it is just my feeling that this resort could put themselves in a much higher category if they would just learn to make things work for their guests and just stop saying no.. So.. yes a bit critical but this was not an ordinary trip so the little things meant a lot. Will I go back??? probably yes...but it took three days of an education just to learn the ins and outs of the resort. A great concierge is one who makes things happen!! Otherwise whats the point. Also the SPA.....wonderful. Very Good place but NOT excellent but a great potential to be excellent!!

Room Tip: Swim up casita if you plan on just lounging the whole vacation. If doing excursions probably not a...

We went on holiday for eleven days to el dorado royale casitas. The food at the different restaurants was great. Cesar Rodrigues was our barkeeper at the casitas 27 section and we must say he is the best barkeeper we seen at all the resorts we have visited. He makes the difference making sure you feel special through out your vacation.

We were at Casitas 7/30-8/3. This is our sixth trip there because we love it! The property is beautiful, rooms are fantastic (we are especially fond of the swim ups), the restaurants and bars are exceptional. We went to the culinary theater at Fuentes, and the chef demonstrates each dish that you eat. Also went to Santa Fe, which is a new restaurant where you share everything. Most of all though, we appreciate the staff, who make each guest feel welcome and at home. My thanks go especially to our concierge Allen (you da man!), our pool bartender Santiago and server Daisy, and our favorite restaurant server Efrain who we make sure we see every time we visit. I really don't have any issues to discuss, but a few helpful hints: bring bug spray, after all you are in the jungle and there are mosquitos; your concierge will arrange dinner reservations and is very helpful describing the different restaurants; your concierge also will help you with the pillow menu (yes you can choose your pillows) and aromatherapy menu so make use of all those things. Room service is always on time so be available for delivery.

You don't have to tip but the staff works about 14 hours per day, 6 days per week and they still manage to be great all the time, so take that into consideration.

They do have a membership plan (for all the Karisma properties) which was very valuable for us so we purchased this last trip, however no one will try and strong arm you into going to the presentation, but if you go, do so because you are actually interested in the program so that you don't consider it a waste of time.

Hope this was helpful. We'll be back in October!

Room Tip: Block 31 has a restaurant on the pool deck with great food

Stayed 4 days, 3 nights (7/31 to 8/3) for a last minute quick trip. We chose this resort based on a friend's recent experience. We loved every minute of our short visit. All the staff are friendly and genuine. The food was delicious and the service was outstanding. We mostly relaxed on the beach and in our casitas section pool so we did not get to experience all that this property has to offer, but we are already planning a return trip back in November. The resort is adults only and we saw almost exclusively all couples everywhere we went. Most everyone we talked to was there to celebrate a honeymoon, anniversary, birthday or some other special occasion. Romance was in the air everywhere. We can't wait to get back! Thank you to all the staff that made our visit a great experience....Olverin and Diego in section 31, Concierge Luis for a candlelight dinner at our preferred time, Cesar our candlelight dinner waiter, Paulino and Daniel at Santa Fe...and everyone else we came across. Thank you!
