If you've already booked, you're in for a treat. If you're doing your research, this one deserves serious consideration!
We had a wonderful 10 day stay as a party of 2 couples, in Casitas 28 and 29, travelling with Thomson/First Choice from the UK. The rooms are spacious, well appointed and have everything you would expect. The gardens and grounds are immaculate, and constantly being attended to. The swim ups and pool areas are lovely, landscaped and clean, and we also enjoyed the beach beds. The impressive hotel greenhouse is worth a visit.
But what really made the trip was the staff - everyone including concierges, maids, gardeners, restaurant staff, pool bar and beach bar staff were polite, friendly, and nothing was too much trouble. I jokingly told our concierge that 'there was a tiny fly in my ointment' (my WiFi had expired!) and the poor man looked horrified! Special thanks to Isac, Maggy, Irving and Daniel.
The food is wonderful - we tried most restaurants, and especially enjoyed the Santa Fe, Cocotal, Kampai and both Italian restaurants. Nice touches include infused water, a chocolate fountain at breakfast (really!) and the care taken with our vegetarian companions.
We used the Spa (gorgeous) and also the jet skis (great fun), snorkelled off the beach and also visited the on-site turtle hatchery every morning in the hope of seeing hatchlings (no joy).
Negatives? I really have to split hairs here - the rooms can be quite dark, so a torch is handy when looking for things! We did experience large groups of very noisy people around the pool areas, so relocated to the beach or another casita area when this was a problem. The beach isn't the most pictuesque, and there is work underway to protect the reef, which involves floating large concrete blocks and placing them along the beach approx 200 feet out in the water, so there is occasional boat and generator noise, but this wasn't a problem.
We did a few trips out, and recommend snorkelling with the turtles at Akumal, swimming in a cenote, visiting Chitzen Itza, Coba and Tulum. We also swam with whale sharks, a once in a lifetime thrill. Please also see separate review for Your Private Tour.
Highly recommended and we would definitely consider a return visit.
