the resort was beautiful and very clean. all of the staff were very friendly and helpful. we stayed in a swim up casita and it was worth the extra money. the food was delicious in every restaurant. the drinks are very good (including crown royal). I went to the spa one day and it was amazing. only about 20 minutes from the airport but far enough away from the city and in the beautiful jungle. the shows at night were a good variety (casino, magic, comedy, Caribbean). its a huge place that's very spread out so its never too crowded but there are shuttles every 5-10 minutes to take you wherever you need to go. definitely can't wait to go back.

wife and I had an excellent time. Great combination of releaxing at beach and activities at pool. Meals were great, smaller servings allowed us to enjoy starter, main and dessert.
Staff all very friendly and helpful. Our concierge, Karla, took care of all our needs:reservations, billing and dresssing up the room with rose petals.
Whole resort was clean and well groomed. Everything in the room worked fine. The waiters and shuttle drivers were fun and entertaining, always ready to talk and share Mexican culture.

We did spen 1 hour with the loyalty program sales team and were compensated for our time. We met several couples who did buy into the plan, all were satisfied. We are not ready to make the comitment.

This incredible place is 'by Karisma' but we wonder if it's really by NASA as they haven't just raised the bar.........they've blasted it into orbit! Imagine a place where everything you've loved about every summer holiday you've ever had has been brought together & then perfected.
Ever had trouble getting a sunbed? Well here they outnumber the guests by about 3 to 1!
(or maybe snooze on one of the idyllic beach Kabana's & be cared for by a beach butler)
Ever had trouble getting a drink? We never had to wait more than a couple of minutes to be served, even at the larger busier bars. Plus the bar staff always acknowledge you if they're serving someone else, so you know you'll be attended in turn. But it's even a pleasure waiting a few moments as you'll quickly chat with another lovely couple from (mostly) Canada or the US & all agree that Karisma should be begged to run all our governments.
Ever had tummy trouble on holiday? I should be taken out & whipped for even mentioning something so offensively irrelevant in this review. Their phrase 'Gourmet Inclusive' is spot on. The only tummy trouble you might experience is that yours will easily expand somewhat during your holiday if you aren't careful (or if you order double portions like a few of the American guests claimed to do!!) But thankfully help is at hand via the two splendid gyms & the regular organised activities such as kyaking & bike tours. The latter of which includes a visit to the on site green houses in which much of their fruit & vegetables are grown. Day fresh produce, selected by the chef with no transport needed.....what a simply brilliant idea!
We've been home two weeks now, but are still dreamily watching all the review vids on youtube & already saving for our next visit. (maybe if we don't eat or use electricity for the next couple of months? etc........)
If you run a hotel anywhere then please go to a Karisma resort asap to see just how it can & should be done AND all at a price that I still can't believe was for both of us!
Thank you to all involved for the best holiday we've ever had by a huge margin & easily worth every minute of the 11 hour flight out there from the UK.

Room Tip: Definitely go for the Casitas if you can. You get all the quiet friendly intimacy of your own pool a...

The observant among you will notice that I reviewed this hotel in October last year (2012) and remarked on its continuing high standards, following my fifth visit to the resort. I recently returned to the Mayan Riviera area for our Son's wedding. We stayed one week at the Grand Sunset Princess, our Son and his Wife's choice, not ours, which I have already reviewed on Trip Advisor. We then returned to El Dorado Casitas Royale once again, for a week of relaxation...and peace and quiet!
Having been to EDCR so many times now, it is almost inevitable that I am going to notice declining standards. As mentioned previously, many people who visit this resort on one occasion will be blown away by it; return guests such as myself will notice a decline.
So here is a totally honest and unexaggerated report of what you can expect from EDCR if you went there today...in no particular order!
Booking the more expensive casita suites should afford you extra privileges...of course! Basically the only benefit of booking a casita is being able to pre-book dinner reservations through your personal concierge. If you book a junior suite, you can use the individual pool and pool bars in the casita section of the hotel, lounge around on the beach beds and sun loungers all day, enjoy the services of the beach butlers, and all for less cash than those staying in actual casita suites paid! No-one is going to stop you! So my advice, book the cheapest junior suite and enjoy the benefits of the casita suites. The rooms themselves are virtually identical! If you don't believe me, ask to see both room categories!!
The beach beds and loungers are sorely in need of up-grading. The mattresses are thin, and well-worn, and consequently, uncomfortable. The few that have cotton covers on are actually hiding torn or damaged mattresses! We found it difficult to find somewhere that was actually comfortable to sit/lie on during the day!
Photographs on the hotel and Karisma websites, show a glorious pre-hurricane Wilma (2005) huge, sandy beach. What they don't show is how stoney the sand is underwater, and also the massive "whale-like" sandbags the resort has placed right along the beach, about 30 feet out in the water, as a precaution against any further major damage from a hurricane. Their justification for spoiling the view, and what remains of the beach, is that they are creating environmentally friendly, artificial reefs. I have been visiting EDCR since 2006, and have seen no improvement in the reclamation of any of the beach area. The length of the beach means there is room for everyone, but the beach does, in my opinion, leave a lot to be desired.
Many original casita suites have been renovated; new A/C units installed, and bathroom fittings up-graded. Please note...whatever you set the air conditioning to do, it will turn itself off overnight, and run the (somewhat noisy) fan only...it blows hot air at you, not nicely cooled air!

The websites insist there is a "smart/casual" dress code in the restaurants for dinner. It's not enforced...no matter how much you enjoy dressing for dinner, you will find yourself sharing a restaurant with the vest and flip-flop brigade, and nothing is said, even though each restaurant has a prominent sign saying this level of dress will not be tolerated. I guess this is a good thing if you enjoy wearing a vest, or flip-flops to dinner!

Surprisingly, if you want it, you're going to have to pay for Wi-Fi connections (unless you are an Exotic Club member, their in-house sort-of timeshare scheme) in which case you can access free Wi-Fi in the members lounge. Otherwise, you're paying US$52.00 per week (lesser amounts for 4 days or per day)
The nightly turndown and aromatherapy service is sporadic at best. If you cannot sleep without having someone turn down your bed, place the inevitable chocolate mints on your pillow, and puff a few sprays of something smelly around your room, you're going to be disappointed! I think we got turned down on 3 nights out of the 7 we spent there.
The "agua del amores"... Outside showers to you, are novel if you haven't enjoyed showering in the great outdoors before, but would be so much nicer if you didn't have to run around under the trickle of water emanating from the "deer antler-like" shower head to get wet! Decent shower heads would make showering "a deux" much more fun!
The resort, admirably I suppose, is making every effort to operate as ecologically and environmentally friendly as it can. There is such a thing as being a little OTT in this matter, for example, the lighting and bulbs in the rooms. They are so dim, it is impossible to read and not bright enough for anything else that requires your eyes being open! Hope you're the romantic types!
Both bathroom and pool-side towels are seriously showing their age; they need replacing-ALL of them! I don't expect a five star resort to offer me threadbare, cardboard-like towels to dry myself with. Very poor, and seriously declined since 2006 when I first visited.
Be aware, if you do book a basic junior suite, that because you cannot make dinner reservations for the restaurants, that you will more often than not, find that you cannot get into the restaurant of your choice, just when you feel like it. Even though there may well be empty tables right in front of your eyes, they will have been previously reserved by casita guests, and you will be referred to the nearest bar with a little red buzzer, that, hopefully will eventually buzz and tell you a table is available. If this is not to your liking, you will have no choice but to trawl the other restaurants, looking for a table...that's just the way it is!
In the event of anything that doesn't fulfill your expectations...Be prepared to argue, wave your arms, stamp your feet, and shout! It still won't make much difference, but you might feel better! Your personal concierge, whether you're in a junior suite or a casita, will promise you everything will be sorted out to your satisfaction...regardless of what it Is. Remember...you are in Mexico, and remember mañana really does mean tomorrow, or whenever we get round to it...maybe! In general, they are very friendly people, whose hands are tied by a management who are hell-bent on cutting costs. Shout even louder if someone says to you " We'll take care of that for you..."
Standards are going down, of that there is no doubt. However, this is still a beautiful resort, the staff are generally extremely pleasant, obliging and well trained, and the beds are very comfortable (ask your concierge for the pillow menu...lots of great choices on it). The food is first class, so long as you understand the fact that this resort, calls itself "gourmet inclusive" - there's a huge clue there! It is a shame that corners are being cut, and standards are declining. To many, who go there once, it truly will be paradise; but to those who may consider a return visit, you should prepare to be a little disappointed. It's become very clear that the focus is on one-time visitors, and not on loyal, return guests.

Room Tip: Book a junior suite...enjoy the benefits of a casita suite...unless being able to make dinner reserv...

We have just arrived home from a two weeks holiday at the El Dorado Royale Hotel. It was brilliant, lovely staff very friendly, food excellent, weather great, atmosphere spot on, rooms nice and big plenty of storage, great shower and entertainment was good. Would have loved to stay there another week. So much to do. 2 large swimming pools one for all the activities and the other to relax by. The only thing that was missing was somewhere to get a coffee or tea as the bars only served cold drinks. But that didn't stop us enjoying ourselves. We plan to go back in a couple of years.

Room Tip: Book a swim-up room.

This Hotel makes Sandles look like FLIP FLOPSI honestly cant fault the accommodation, staff and food.It was excellente. Every one of the staff had a smile and would do Anything to accommodate .I even witnessed one of them blowing up a lilo for a customer and another supplying Sun-cream!!! UNBELIEVABLE.We were given a free upgrade to an infinity suite in room 3621 and would like to thank EVERY member of staff for an extremely memorable time.It is such a pity the staff are only given contracts for 1 month at a time as they are priceless.

This is our third trip to the Casitas. As members of the Exotic Travel club we stayed in the 3200 block, in our opinion the greatest rooms at the resort. As always service everywhere was impeccable. Every member of staff is so happy and gives the place a wonderful atmosphere. I understand they are treated exceptionally well as employees.
A special thanks to Lily and Adrianne our butlers who went over and above the expected, for example a lovely romantic room awaiting our return from our candlelight dinner on the beach on our anniversary. Nothing was too much trouble and everything requested was delivered in minutes. Relaxing around the pool was wonderful with a maximum of six people there at any one time.
Just one more negative observation, the restaurants in the evening were not upholding the dress code, we saw men in beach shorts, collarless shirts and trainers in what is in our opinion is the most formal restaurant, the Italian at the Casitas, it is a beautiful place in which more formal clothing would be appropriate.
Highly recommended for a really special vacation.

Room Tip: Try to get in blocks 3100 or 3200 if you are able.
