“A Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

Stayed 5 nights, the room overlooking the garden was spacious and spotlessly clean. Other reviewers have mentioned train noise, yes there is a nearby railway but was in no way an issue for us.
Everyone very friendly, breakfast lifted by little touches such as lovely home made jams! Dinner quality high and service attentive. Just a shame the weather was such that we could not take advantage of eating outside on the terrace.
A great little Auberge , centrally placed for the 'must sees' of the region. Would have no hesitation recommending or indeed visiting ourselves again.

We stayed for three nights with half-board at Auberge de Launay. Our room was quite large on the garden side and very comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was typical French, but unlimited coffee was available. The 3-course dinners were outstanding and the wine list quite extensive. We would highly recommend this auberge and hope to come again ourselves.

We had visited this restaurant in June 2009 and it was a must on our return. Again it was a beautiful evening on the patio. The dinner was very nice, good presentation and flavor but not quite the "wow" as the first visit. Maybe it was the "magic" of the first visit with a spectacular bottle of grand Cru Pinot noir. We will spread our wings at our next trip to the Loire.

We stayed in a twin room for 1 night. The room was a good size and comfortable the bathroom was a little tatty and had a bit of mould on the grouting but apart from that it was very clean. We ate in the restaurant and it was lovely. The menu was quite limited but that is to be expected, I would much rather have quality over quantity. We stayed mid week and the restaurant was full and had many French people in it which I always enjoy. The outside area is lovely and we enjoyed a good bottle of red in the gardens.

We stayed for 6 days and booked to dine each evening convinced by the reviews. However! We were most disappointed in the quality and presentation of the food.
Wwe would class as “rustic” at best. Also the menu choice was quite limited. The menu stays the same for a month long . So it became quite boring after 6 days! Not even a “dish of the day” which would have at least introduced some variety. The wine selection was good and the prices were what one might expect e.g. £26 a bottle of Vouvray. The service was good and the staff very friendly.
The room, one of the ground floor rooms at the rear [52] was large enough and clean. However the bathroom was small with a non-working extractor and only had a shower over the bath[high sides] which made it difficult for we of advanced years! Also working out how to switch from bath to shower took a bit of time to figure out. One pulled the bath tap spout downwards. A new one on us! The room did not have air conditioning which in this day and age quite surprising and this resulted in some very uncomfortable nights. One day the temperature reached 37 degrees! Also provision of a fan would have helped but was not available so went out and bought one!
The room allocation was not thought through. It seemed that they always put families with children on the first floor so for those underneath..such as we were..had to put up with lots of noise of chidren running around and banging doors!
The outside of the rooms was a grassed/orchard area which was not very well tended and would have benefitted from a few more flowers , tubs and baskets.
All in all we were disappointed with our stay and would certainly not recommend for a stay of more than a couple of days and even then I think there are better places in the vicinity. We will not be back.

Room Tip: Have a first floor room at the back

We recently stayed overnight at this Auberge (our third time), en route to the Dordogne..
The hotel is very popular and should be prebooked. It is popular as a base for people staying 3 nights or more in the Chateaux area.Very comfortable room and good buffet dinner (as Sunday). The staff are very helpful and we hope to return again.

This is one of our favoutite hotels and we stay a couple of times a year when passing through the Loire. On hearing it had changed hands we were concerned that standards may have slipped. There is no discernable change in the rooms or standard of service from the staff. Certainly the service from the staff was excellent and the fact that the weather was good meant that we could use the garden both for relaxing and dining and aperos and coffee.
The food, always a big plus, was in our opinion excellent, but as has already been mentioned in another review, perhaps a little less adventurous in its' spicing. However as the menu changes monthly it could be different again next month. I feel I must mention the great cheese board and the level of knowledge displayed by the waiter.

So where is the difference? The main difference is in the interaction between the owners and the guests. The previous owners Helene and Francois were completely customer focused and visible. They called you by your names for the duration of your stay and were very proactive. The new owners have a slightly different approach . For example, on the second night I queried a dinner reservation and the Owner asked if i was a guest, despite him serving me coffee and seeing me around the grounds. Is this being over critical? probably. Would a first time visitor enjoy their stay? absolutely.
