“It is what it is”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013

My understanding is that this is a hotel for businesspeople looking for something not too expensive. And that's exactly what it is. Not too expensive, nice enough, friendly staff, spacious room. Nonetheless, it's not great: the water pressure in the shower is mediocre, the towels are flimsy, the noise from the nearby highway can be loud. The restaurant next door--run by the same company--is convenient and good (though one person in our group possibly got food poisoning there). Bottom line: if you need to visit Hatillo and want an affordable and reasonably comfortable place to stay, this is the one.

We had a big clean room with a queen bed but the decoration was not really nice. They do not offer breakfast but just across the street they have a dinner were you can have breakfast or dinner.
I would say that the room was a little bit price for what it was. We stayed only one night because we were doing a road trip in PR.

There isn't too much choice of hotels in the area of Hatillo, PR...and El Buen Cafe Hotel might just fit the bill. From the outside (just off busy Hwy 2) it looks pretty grim.., It's all grey cement and it looks like a military bunker. The inside isn't much better...with a long hallway with rooms on both sides. But the rooms themselves are rather large, although the decor is definitely out of the 80s. All rooms have two double beds and they are comfortable; moreover, the A/C isn't too noisy. Flatscreen TV is provided. Everything is spotlessly clean. The receptionist spoke English and checking in was a breeze. There's a small (really small!) outdoor pool with a little gazebo. Surprisingly, being so close to the highway, the hotel is very quiet. And there's a pretty decent restaurant right across the street. All in all, a pretty decent place to spend the night.

Nice hotel, it’s divided in 2 buildings, we stayed on the one located above the restaurant (and cafeteria), that one has the new (or remodeled) rooms. The hotel doesn’t include breakfast, but the cafeteria that’s on the 2nd building is good, good food and good prices too, so, you don’t need to get out looking for a place to eat, unless you want to. The room was big enough and clean. The staff was very friendly. On the first building they’ve the pool, but we didn’t have time for that. It's a good place to spend a few nights and enjoy the different attractions you can find on nearby cities (Arecibo, Lares, Camuy).

The only thing that I didn’t like is that the hotel is in front of the main road, very close, so, the location of my room was facing that way, and at night (from time to time) you hear a lot of noise from the road, so, if you had the chance, ask for the rooms on the back, the noise will be less.

Also, keep in mind that this is not a beach hotel. If you’re looking for good beaches you’ll have to drive west, which will be like 30 miles or so. But, if you want to visit interesting places and/or like nature, from there you could drive to different locations like Lares, Utuado, Arecibo, Camuy and enjoy from beautiful places.

Other than that, the hotel is good; I’ll recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Rooms on the back are quieter

Don't be put off by the fact that this hotel is on the main road and really doesn't look much from the outside. It was the best value for money stay we had on our recent trip to Puerto Rico. The rooms are large, clean and well equipped, the swimming pool is small but great for a cool dip at the end of a hot day, and there was little road noise. The staff couldn't have been more helpful.
The restaurant and cafe over the road were great, breakfast was especially good.

Friendly (English speaking) receptionist took great care to show me the room thoroughly. The room (215) was spacious, very clean and comfortable. It had a good fridge, although the TV was pretty old - but I didn't watch it anyway. See comments below on getting a good room. There are no room safes but you can leave stuff at the reception if valuable. The wifi internet worked every time and the speed was good. The AC was very powerful (good) but a bit noisy so I turned it off at night (bad). Comfortable quite firm bed - I slept well.

The hotel is conveniently situated right on highway 2 which joins up onto Autopista 22 or goes straight into Arecibo (about 10 mins). If you are ariving into San Juan try and avoid the evening rush hour as the traffic is terrible (like the driving...). Travel time from San Juan airport to this hotel can be from 1 hour to 3 hours.

The associated restaurant looks at first sight a bit like a "cafe" but actually the service was friendly and the food was very tasty (try the garlic bread strips - which are complimentary - and the coffee). It is also open from 5:30 in the morning to late so availability is good.

Be careful with security in Puerto Rico - don't leave anything valuable in your car. A friend had hers broken into and rifled in plain sight in a relatively busy car park while we were there.

Room Tip: Try to get one at the back of the hotel away from the road - and preferably not in the "annex&q...

There are not too many choices in the Arecibo area, but El Buen is a good pick. The rooms are clean and spacious, but with nothing fancy. The internet speed is good. The hotel staff was quite friendly and helpful to someone who does not speak Spanish. It also conveniently next door to the companion El Buen Cafe, so there is no problem finding a good place to eat. It can be a little noisy from the street traffic, but not bad.
