We stayed one night at the El Jay Holiday Lodge, and we found it perfectly adequate for the price. We had a nice, clean apartment room with cooking facilities and a nice large fridge. We checked in quite late, so Michelle left our room unlocked for us. We were Hot Air Ballooning the next morning, so we were gone quite early the next morning, though we hadn't yet checked out. We received a concerned call from Michelle to make sure we were alright, as she'd noticed our car missing. We thought this was a very kind gesture, as we'd already paid for the room, so she wasn't just concerned that we'd left without paying.
All up, we were very happy with our stay, and I would definitely stay there again.

First of all i've got to say.. if you want luxury.. pay 300-800 dollars a night for another hotel. But if you want cheap clean safe accommodation you can pay between 60-90 dollars a night and stay here..

When we checked in we where greeted by a very nice lady who lives in the first flat next to the office... She was there waiting for us and personally showed us to our room and told us how everything worked. ( which mind you is something that some 4 and 5 star hotels dont do) the room was Very clean and the aircon had already been turned on which was nice since it was a very hot day. the bed was soft and comfortable no complaints there. We even got a covered car park right next to our room too.

if you are after cheap accom which is very close to Parklands Show-grounds (which is the reason we stayed there) then i do recommend this place...

We arrived and couldn't find anyone to check us in. We rang the buzzer for around 5 mins then decided to find a phone number, as none was displayed. We were then checked in by someone who "lived" there on the first floor. The whole hotel was pretty much used for full time renters, ppl who made it their home. We went into the unit and there was no lock on the sliding door...at all. It was fairly clean, though a dirty mop bucket and mop were left in the bathroom with hair and dirt all in the bottom of it. The rooms were never serviced the whole time we were there and we were only allowed 2 rolls of toilet paper for the week. There were hand made signs stuck up in the rooms.....about turning every appliance off at the wall all the time, about dirty/clean cutlery, about putting stuff in the cupboards, about not turning the aircon below 24 degrees, and if it was left on when you went out they would enter your room, turn it off and take your controls away! We felt very unsafe there....It was noisy as hell due to roadworks right outside, which can't be helped, but the number of children living in the complex is insane and they play on the back stairs and in the driveway and yell and scream for ages. Someone in the room above/below/beside us did weights for hours on end at night and you could hear the weights rolling across the floor everytime he changed them.

We never saw anyone from management the entire time we were there. No clean fresh towels, no clean bedding, no toilet paper or soap. There was also a giant bottle of share shampoo/conditioner left for us to use, which was so filthy and dirty it must of been there for months. They were almost empty but I guess they thought we might like to share shampoo with the previous guests.

The rooms stunk of deoderiser which made us wonder if they were trying to cover something up? The beds were rock hard and the pillows very sub standard. The sheets were clean, though stained, and we didn't use the bedspreads due to a LOT of staining.

We were very very glad to leave at the end of our week and count our lucky stars that no physical harm happened to us whilst there.

Thank you for your feedback, but we would like to set the recort straight on a number of issues you raised .
We are a budget motel and do not have a 24 hr reception. We do answer the phone and the night bell at all hours of the day and night. From time to time we do need to attend to matters away from the motel and leave the motel in the hands of our neighbours. We are puzzled that you were not able to see the phone number to contact us as it is displayed at both the signs at the office door and the sign at the front of the building. We also do our best to ensure we are there when we have been advised of a guests arrival time, but this occassionally does not work out. If we are away we make other arrangements for the guests to be met and shown to their units. Signs are displayed at the office door and the front of the building instructing guests as to what to do.
You are also right in that there are a lot of permanent residents in the complex. The motel occupies just the ground floor of the complex and the remaining two levels are privately owned apartments. We realise this is a little unusual for a motel, but very common in most high rises holiday acommodation everywhere.
The unit that you were in, whilst managed through the motel, is generally for holiday accommodation, and an initial compliemnt of toiletries, tea and coffee etc is supplied. Additional requirements are to be supplied by the guest. For the same reason your room was not serviced on a daily basis. Bed linen is changed weekly and towels are replaced at the guests request. This is also why we have notices requesting guests to do their own washing up. If you wanted motel style accommodation, where the rooms are serviced daily, then we apologise for this misunderstanding.
The recommended temperature setting for air conditioning units is 24 degrees and to keep our costs ( and prices) down we ask guests to turn off appliances when they are not in use. Guests are also asked to conserve water, as until recently, the Gold Coast was under drought conditions. Most guests try to be environmentally friendly and only too happy to ensure they do not waste water or electricity.
Bucket ard mop are provided for any spills which may need to be wiped up. Extra shampoo provided to save you from having to purchase any. We provide things like paper towelling, cling wrap and alfoil, detergent, sourers, etc.,and plenty of cutlery and crockery We like to provide these little things to help you have a more stress free holiday.
We are also puzzled by your comments about the doors having no locks and their being no signs of management for the whole week. The doors do not have keyed deadlocks, but they do have the standard keyed latch plus a security chain. As for no sign of Management, we actually live on the premises ,most of the time. on the same level as you were staying - just 2 doors to the East of you.. We do get away from time to time for short breaks and engage someone to manage the motel in our absence. We dont recall being away for a week in August so are very surprised you did not see us for your entire stay. We are usually in the office or out and about stripping and clenaing the units We take pride in the standard we maintain at our budget motel and its extremely unusual for us to receive such negative feedback and we are also very disappointed that you did not enjoy your stay. As of the children playing - yes we are child friendly and yes they are allowed to play outside. If they were making too much noise I would be the first to tell them to quiten down. There is 16 units in the complex and if each unit had one child yes there would be 16 children. There was not sixteen children at the time of your visit there were approx 5 permanent - holidaying children and yes they were allowed to play outside and in the pool. They are not allowed to ride scooters or hard wheeled bikes around the complex - thus keeping down the hard wheeled noise. We enjoy seeing the children outside playing and we encourage them to do so. I hope families read this and realize we are child friendly

I was not quite impressed with this motel. When we entered the room there was a musty smell too it, probably because there was somone else there before we checked in. They should have opened the balcony windows or the bedroom windows to let the smell go out. It is a nice little set up, but I didnt feel comfortable and it didnt feel quite clean. There was a double bed in the master bedroom and a single bed and also a single bed out in the lounge and a mattress to sleep on the floor. You had to walk through the master bedroom to have access to the bathroom, I didnt like that , the bathroom door was a folding door with a magnetic latch, which kept opening when the wiind blew. The small bathroom window, didnt have a inner screen it was just the main window that you pull shut or to open it. The shower didnt have a door to pull shut or curtain so the water kept going outside and wetting the floor.

On the first night, we were trying to go out and I went to lock the balcony window and it wouldnt lock! I tried and tried, my husband tried and we still couldnt. We advised the owner and he said he would have it fixed for us when we returned. When we returned it still wasnt fixed. I had to get a butter knife to hit the latch for it too lock, for security reasons of course, we had two teenage daughters with us! For the four days that we were there we never opened the balcony door due to this, and had to leave the bedroom windows open for fresh air to ciruculate in the room.

There were all the necessary kitchen utensils and appliances, there.

There were road work constructions outside the motel and we had to walk about 3 minutes to the bus stop to get the bus to Movie World, Sea World and Surfers.

They only have have two washing machines in the main office and its $2.00 per load.

We paid $90.00 per night, and it was not up to standard as the motel in Cairns where we paid $70.00 per night.

Otherwise Brian was very helpful in advising us where to go etc, and other places to see. They Brian and Mary were very friendly people.

Although, I think the Jadran Motel would have been better than the El Jay Holiday Units.
