We booked a 2 bedroom deluxe unit for 2 nights (Friday and Saturday night). I had researched extensively and opted for the more expensive option of $165/night (described as ‘Fantastic Ocean Views’) at the property in order to avoid road noise and guarantee great direct beach views. We could have booked a standard 2 bedroom unit but the property’s website at $125/night said this might get some road noise and have side on views of the beach.
The apartment we were allocated had constant traffic noise and had a side on view of the beach and did not have the expansive views straight to the beach as their picture for the deluxe apartment showed.
The problem with this building is the design. From what I could see, only 1 unit per floor actually has views direct to the beach out the front. ALL the others are along the north and south sides with side views to the beach, just with some further back from the beach. In addition, the balcony and room design work against good views from the units. The rooms narrow toward the outside of the building so you feel you’re looking somewhat through a tunnel effect. I gave a blunt opinion of the view to the desk clerk soon after checking in and he said I had a beachfront room at the front of the building. It wasn’t! I was only about 1 back from the front, but it still gives ONLY a side on view looking over another building toward the beach with very limited beach views from inside the unit (contrary to the depiction in website images)
A number of things contributed to dissatisfaction with our stay. The main one was the poor view, considering the cost and claims on the website. The privacy lock on the bathroom didn’t work, the bathroom plumbing gave a fetid odour from time to time and we couldn’t get the spa near the pool to work (beyond it emitting the occasional air bubble) despite many attempts. Our unit had an upstairs deck and spa but this was locked with a sign that we could access it for an additional fee. The cost quoted was $100 for the maintenance man to clean and fill the spa! Other attempts to get a good view were also stymied with the rooftop deck and BBQ area ‘closed for maintenance until further notice’.
In the context of this, the allocation of 4 sugar sachets for an apartment usually accommodating 4 people really fitted into the stingy air of the property. There were 4 teas and 4 coffees but only 4 sugars! Does no one ever have more than 1 sugar in a coffee and, if all the drinks were consumed, that is an average of ½ a sachet (1/2 teaspoon) of sugar per drink. I have stayed in many serviced apartments and hotels (just recently returned from a 9 week trip) and don’t recall such stinginess elsewhere!
The outdoor spa near the pool was a pleasant temperature but beware of using it at night alone or only as a small group of females. The spa is located close to the beachside boundary of the property with a reasonably low fence that gives high visibility to the pool and spa area. The property is a few hundred metres from a Surf Life saving club with a bar and bistro. A public path runs along the beachside fence and you may (as we experienced) have drunken yobs leering and yelling at you. The low fence could be scaled and, after having yobs leering and yelling at us on our first night, we did not use the spa on the Saturday night as this was probably another night for drunken yobs. I would not want to stay in a ground floor unit in the building due to the low fence to the beach.
