“a 'different' greece”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

Ancient Thira is set high on top of a peninsula between the towns Kamari and Perissa. It has stunning panoramic views as you walk through the ancient town. The ruins are very interesting and have a number of information boards throughout - although not enough in my opinion if attending without a tour guide. Be aware, there are no toilets or cafes up top (not on the day I went anyway). If you're keen for a good hike, walking up the winding road from Kamari is a great exercise with lovely views the whole way!

“Great views & interesting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

We walked up from Kamari along the zig zag road. It took about 45 mins to do so. We then spent about an hour or so exploring the site. The views from the site are magnificient & the site interesting. Not much in the way of signs explaining things though.
Well worth the climb though.

“Interesting, wonderful, but better prepare yourself”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

Ancient Thera is an interesing place and offers magnificent views to the east of Santorini. So its worth going there. But reading the stones and ruins is difficult. If you want more than just sseing "old stones", prepare yourself a little, read books, explore the web about Ancient Thera. You'll be payed back by seeing more than the normal tourist. Or take a guide.
Since 2012 you have to pay for visiting Ancient Thera. But the 2 Euro are not too much. Even if you are not prepared.

“Interesting site”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

Surprisingly large city ruins on the top of a 1000-foot hill. Been inhabited on and off since 9th century BC, apparently, though since it was continuously rebuilt most of what remains is Roman from early AD, some quite well-preserved.

Including even baths! You have to wonder why they built in such a high and remote place and how they dealt with the supply problems of bringing up food & water etc... at the top of a hill like this there can't be any wells...? Slaves and pack animals, I suppose... possibly some sort of pulley / winch system, though nothing in the literature mentions this issue?

Kamari, the nearest town, is easily accessible by bus, and we had thought of walking from there to the site, but now I know how high it is I'm glad we took a minibus.... the guide book we had didn't really make it clear what a trek that would be.

Note: no bathrooms available on-site, so plan ahead!

“Great road to the top.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2012

We travelled by quad bikes to the top. Wonderful views. In fact we were so impressed, we went back the next day, this time by car and jeep. Side of the roads are precipitous, but safe.
