We stayed here from 27th Feb to 5th March and it was a pretty nice place to stay. I read some of the other reviews about cockroaches but we never saw any of this. The apartment was great, really spacious and clean. The cleaning staff are so thorough and really nice too.
A few people have commented that some of the outside of the apartments need work (re-plastering and re-painting etc). This is true although there were people working on it while we were there and it doesn't detract much from the place as a whole.
One problem was, as other people mentioned, the loungers by the pool were dirty and broken and the area around the pool could really do with some non-slip tiles as it was VERY slippery when wet.
The pool bar/restaurant was quite nice, very simple so I'd mainly recommend it for snacks by the pool or an evening when you really can't be bothered going outside the hotel complex. We mainly ate at other places around the resort. (Try the Mexican near where the Saturday market is held.) The staff were nice here too. There is also a bar which is open until 3am, it shows some football I think but I'm not into football so I haven't a clue how good that is. It also has karaoke for the more adventurous and even if you don't fancy it yourself, it can be funny to watch. =) Bar staff are nice and prices are ok (4 euros for WKD or a glass of Baileys)
No clue what the buffet was like but people seem to like it, it was busy every evening. The supermarket was great, full of stuff for breakfasts, staff were nice and the prices were reasonable. It was also handy that they stock a lot of big bottles of water so you don't have to carry them far to the apartments.
Only other things about the hotel complex are that it would be better if there was a stricter non-smoking policy as it could get quite bad around the pool which I imagine is not very good for asthmatics or the children who were there. Also it is directly in a flight path which never bothered us but light sleepers may find it loud, I'm not sure. Flights don't seem to go later than 12am however. The pool tables by the bar are also very temperamental.
I have to say, we really didn't like the reps at all. One looked a bit 'out of it' a lot of the time and forgot a very simple punch line during one of their 'performances'. Don't know about the children’s entertainment, but the family and adult entertainment appeared a bit of a farce (in a bad way). We were going to do the Quiz one night but it was so badly organised that we just got up and left. Another one of the reps looks like Joe 90, so this may intrigue the Gerry Anderson fans out there. Think he may have had his 'egg-whisk' in the reps hut too... =P
The resort itself was really nice and had some really cool shops and nice places to eat. The vegetarian fry at The Blues Bar is fantastic! The Blues Bar in general is really cool, great atmosphere, drinks and food. Brilliant selection of cocktails (Try the Purple Rain, it tastes like Parma Violet sweets!!!) although these probably shouldn't be tried with the breakfast...
One place to avoid eating at is next to the T-shirt shop opposite the crepe shop. (It's just down from the Blues Bar and 60's Bar) Think it's called the Metropolis. They tried to serve raw chicken and steak, suddenly took it back and cooked both together on the same 'stone'. I didn't have either but apparently the steak was like boot leather and in general service was shoddy in comparison to EVERYWHERE else we ate that week.
The beach was ok but is more of a harbour so is very stony. There are some cool little fish that swim round in it. Quite nice beach but I would recommend, if you can get to it, try Jandia resort instead, it's fantastic. Although as a whole, Caleta is a better resort.
Caleta feels like a very safe resort and although we were never careless, we didn't feel at risk from pick-pockets or any other crime which people are usually warned about at holiday resorts. There is a place to book fairly reasonable excursions outside the resort but if you can, hire a car as we got to see some amazing scenes of the mountains and Betancuria.
While the resort may be quiet for some children and teenagers, we didn't find it lacking (myself and my partner are 22 and 23). There is mini-golf, tennis, archery, arcades, shops, plenty of space to play on the beach and there are places along the coast walk where you can feed the chipmunks. =)
A word of advice, I have heard some dodgy reports about the Oceanarium at the harbour relating to their treatment of marine life, particularly hammerhead sharks which they are allegedly not qualified to look after. Parents may wish to give this a miss in case these reports are true and children may be upset by marine life which is not being kept in good conditions.
