This is my second review of Elba palace golf. In my first review it was generally very hard to fault the hotel but the food left a little to be desired. Since our first visit we have been back to the hotel twice more, which in itself, it a good recommendation. On our return visit in April 2013 we were delighted that the food in the hotel restaurant has improved dramatically - we were only staying on a bed and breakfast basis but we ate in the hotel restaurant on a couple of evenings. On the downside, I concur with the other reviews which have observed that the hotel is understaffed. One evening we wanted a drink in the hotel bar before we went out for dinner but there was nobody serving which was disappointing. The staff all work incredibly hard and are generally very cheerful and helpful - they are clearly doing their best and it is not their fault that there are not enough staff. Breakfast has also always been good at the Elba Palace but it was a mixed bag this time - some mornings there were no pastries and/or some of the hot items had not been restocked. Our biggest disappointment was that the swimming pool was closed for maintenance for the whole of our second week - we were not informed of this in advance, we had to ask for information and the work went on longer than we were initially told. We asked to be moved to the nearby Sheraton and the receptionist was helpful in sorting this out but when we were told that we would charged extra for the move, we decided to stay put. Reception were very accommodating in sorting out a late check out for us which was really appreciated. We made representations to the management about the pool and understaffing.and it's a positive that they dealt with our complaint so well. Although this hotel has been a favourite of ours for years with multiple trips, we were so disappointed we did not plan to return. However the manager has acknowledged that mistakes were made during our stay and we were offered a free upgrade to a suite and half board for our next trip. We have happily accepted this and we are returning in October. On balance, this is a really nice quiet hotel which generally represents excellent value for money. The staff shortages are disappointing but we would not have complained about this were it not for the issue with the pool. I would still readily recommend this hotel if you want a nice quality quiet place to stay.
