Booked with Thomson Holidays who advertise their rooms as "refurbished" so prior to going, and after reading over Christmas the reviews on Cockroaches, decided to request upper refurbished apartments. On arrival at the hotel there are lengthy delays in checking in mainly due to the fact that you have to complete a manual form for everyone in your party which is the information contained in your passport - scanners? photocopiers? Once forms completed we were advised that the Thomson allocation did not cater for upper floors as mainly families with children but to provide us with our request they would need our signatures on a further piece of paper to state that as we were upper floor we would not attempt to commit suicide and if we did we were responsible and not the hotel. Alarm bells were ringing at this point and we should have asked to see the rooms but the amount of people behind us was ridiculous so we signed, got our map and off to find the rooms. Thankfully it was daylight as this place is huge.
We were allocated rooms 3007 and 3013 on a building site! Rooms were not refurbished although receptionist advised that all rooms have been done - ours must have been the first and is due again. Kitchen drawer - broken, microwave - filthy - Fridge ancient and light went out during the week although still appeared to work - bathroom door locked from outside, thankfully no one in it at time - this was reported to reception and was dealt with very quickly. Only one mirror in flat and that's in the bathroom, all steamed up after shower not good. Beds comfortable but no change in linen - there for full week 5th to 12th March. Towels - ridiculous - we arrived on Wednesday and advised maid at 8.30 a.m. Thursday morning no point in cleaning as had just arrived, no clean towels Thursday to Friday asked a Housekeeper on passing she advised us they would arrive afternoon - not - went to reception and requested both towels and bath mat for both rooms - 3013 got them, we did not - Saturday morning when maid in she took towels prior to us having showered as again on 8.30 a.m. so I asked for fresh ones she said they back at 2 p.m. - they take them in morning, launder them, then return so I had to ask for them back. Went to reception again and explained the situation but finally got them in the afternoon with no bath mat so went back for this but maid lifted this on the Sunday morning. So only three mornings of our week did we have a bath mat.
Showers are dangerous and not for infirm as no safety handle to hold onto when washing also with no bath mat, and bathroom floor filthy you need to wash your feet again once dried off. Pressure of water can vary and once it was quite cold our friends had a day with only cold water and one with no water pressure at all.
Between the early maid arrival the building site starting to work between 6 - 7 a.m. each morning no extra time in bed for me but hubby sleeps with earplugs, highly recommended.
One night after our meal we could not access the apartment as the key failed to work had to walk all the way to reception to have a further key activated, fortunately this was not a particularly late night but quickly resolved though.
The resort itself is small but easy for walking around. Had breakfast each day at The Trafalgar girls there are lovely, had a couple of really good meals at Fado Rock highly recommend their Beef Stroganoff - comes in a pot with a pizza based lid - scrummy, El Patio also great food and good singer as well and the Italian on the edge of precinct also very good. Pubs - O'Connor's was great for the first couple of nights the guys there are good but on every night with same songbook. Kings Arms tucked downstairs was also very good with free BBQ on Saturday's and Sunday's at 3 p.m. and very handy as the rugby was on then. Generally the beer is 350 euro for large and 200 euro for small there are a few and Trafalgar is one that are 150 Euro a
If we ever go back to Fuerteventura then will go to one of the other resorts but will probably give Barcelo a miss as not impressed.
