“Beautiful spot but stay spoilt by lack of nearby restaurants”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2010

A lovely spot to get away from it all but the mission to find a good restaurant did not add to the feeling of relaxation. There are two excellent restaurants in Paternoster but it is quite a drive (25 mins) along a dirt road which you may not want to do at night. The Shelley Point country club near the Oystercatcher has a really terrible restaurant where we had a dreadful meal. Good breakfasts are served at the Oystercatcher but no other meals are now provided - unless you want to live on toasted sandwiches - so if food is important to you on holiday then the isolation could be a problem.

The Oystercatcher Lodge location at Shelley Point is picture perfect - difficult to imagine a better seaside spot than this one. The hosts, Luc and Sue, provide perfect hospitality with a genuine smile and although in the business for a while, they run their immaculate place with the passion and the spirit of beginners. We stayed in the honeymoon suite with 180 dgr views of the Atlantic. After an early walk on the unspoilt beach we enjoyed an excellent breakfast served by the hosts themselves. We couldn`t have wished more and we will strongly recommend this lodge.

The Oystercatcher was a real find. Dolphin and seal-watching from the bedroom, walks along the beach, whales on the horizon, security (part of a gated complex) and Sue & Luc as hosts - 10 out of 10. We stayed in the self-catering apartments and the apartment was lovely, with picture windows in 2 directions in the bedroom.
We accidentally left some jackets there and Sue & Luc brought them to our onward hotel in Cape Town the following week when they were making the 2-hour journey - way beyond the call of duty. Thanks guys! We stayed 4 days and really chilled out. We'll definitely be back (and will check the wardrobes next time sorry)!

Stayed one night in July. It wasn't enough - this is the first hotel I've stayed at in a long time where I actually felt like we were at someone's home. The lodge is set right on the beach front and looking out of our sliding glass door it seemed like we were completely alone in the world. Bedroom and en-suite bathroom were very good size. Nice furnishings (desk and chair, sitting area, coffee cart) and extremely comfortable bed. Private patio was excellent for enjoying coffee over the sea views. Common area was very comfortable - large TV, stereo, couches, honor bar, breakfast area overlooking the sea (sure you're seeing a pattern here). Owners were so welcoming and put together sandwiches for us for dinner so we didn't have to go out (I believe you can also dine at the development's club house, but check with them). They also had great travel suggestions for the Western Cape and beyond. Breakfast was delicious in selection and quantity. Our stay was sandwiched between visits to West Coast and Namaqualand National Parks, but I could easily see spending a long weekend here to unwind and watch the whales in season!

Happy Travels!

We visited at the Oystercatcher Lodge for three nights as part of our honeymoon. I had scoured the net for a suitable spot, and was hoping that we had made the right choice. I was not disappointed!

We were greeted by the warm smiles of Luc and Sue, who made us feel so welcome from the very first moment. (Later in our stay, I heard Luc making the sweetest conversation with a very grumpy and abrupt Dutch couple - truly an angel of hospitality).

We held court in the beautiful honeymoon suite, from which we could watch the sunrise breaking over the bleakly beautiful West Coast landscape. (Let me tell you now - if you love the desert & and sea, come to the West Coast in early autumn as we did - the weather was literally flawless and all surrounding tourist spots were a joy. There are no whales and no flowers yet - but I still loved it so much). From the patio, both sunrise and sunset were fully visible every evening. In whale-watching season, this place must be UNBELIEVABLE. You can literally watch whales from your bed.

Luc and Sue were so helpful without being intrusive. My husband and I are shy people who are uncomfortable around strangers generally, but Luc and Sue were just wonderfully warm and never made us feel weirded out.

We enjoyed the breakfast at this lodge as one of the best we have ever had. Luc and Sue also booked us into the best restaurant we have ever been to on the West Coast - namely Voorstrandt in Paternoster. We loved it so, we returned two nights running!

There is a lovely golf course on this property too - Oystercatcher Lodge is situated in a gated golf estate, encircled with a breathtaking private beaches scattered with shells... hence the name of the lodge.

The furnishings were of a high quality; decor lovely and understated. Fluffy towels. Candles all over the bathroom. Heated towel rails. Awesome old leather couches in the living area. Fireplace. Sparkling pool - even out of season when no-one swims! Many lazy walks around the beaches and golf course. Spa and restaurant at the golf clubhouse (although we only sampled the restaurant, which was quite nice). Magazines and books to read. Large and very well-stocked honesty bar.

Just great. Loved it. The lodge's own website is a sad reflection of reality - I hope they update it soon with better photographs. Amazing.

  • Liked — The views.
  • Disliked — Hmmm.... I suppose the floors were a bit cold. Underfloor heating would have been nice.

We stayed at the Oytercatcher for 2 nights - and it was definitely too short. A wonderful, peaceful place where you can relax and forget the rest of the world. The rooms, especially the honey moon suite, are outstanding: great views from all rooms, clean, modern and designed with love. It is not a place where you find lots of restaurants and cafes - The Oystercatcher is rather a place to get away from it all: to rest, to walk on the beautiful beaches, enjoy the views and watch dolphins (if you have luck) , birds and seals. The hosts Sue and Luc made our stay 100% perfect: their warm welcome and the delicious meal Luc cooked in the evening were the "icing of the cake". We enjoyed our stay at the non-touristic Shelley point on the West coast so much!! We will come again... /www.oystercatcherlodge.co.za
