“Breathtaking”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

It is a long drive to get there .... but ... definatley worth the visit. Hotel was flawless. We had mountain view room that was clean and comfortable. The staff were very helpful and my 2 year old daughter and i loved their gift store ... we adopted an extra two toy sheep!

We ate at the Panorama ... SUPERB ... loved the service, loved their food and variety YUMMMMM!

Would be nice if there were more do to with a 2 year old ...but i guess Mount Cook is designed for the long treks etc ... glad i got to see it and experience so close with The Hermitage

Room had a view of Mt Cook which was stunning from the small balcony, the room was comfortable and clean. The reception staff were very helpful and friendly. We ate in the Panorama restaurant which was pricey for reasonable food. The location is what this hotel is all about.

We left Christchurch and drove through the McKenzie country, then up the valley road towards the incrediable Southern Alps beside a beautiful glacial lake. As we approached it started to snow. It was Sunday 9th September and our pray for a Winter Wonderland experience was coming true.
It was my wifes 50th birthday. When we arrived at the Hermitage, the staff made us very welcome. In the room was a gift for my wife. A beautiful book on the region. Everything about the hotel, the attractions on offer and the facilities surpast our expectations. The restuarants and food was better than we had been lead to believe would be offered. Overall, it was a great time. Next will be to experience it in summer.
A perfect 3 days before we sadly drove south to Queenstown and another great experience.

Room Tip: We had the front block, level 2 which opened out onto a large grass area. Perfect view of Mt Cook, t...

For all the hype we heard about this hotel. Our room was mediocre, mirror on the wall was even distorted. This was a " mountain view " room. Everything cost extra including wifi. $27 to see all the movies, but to watch the one 1/2 hr. one I was interested & had the time to see would cost $16.
We did not have tv service because of the snow storm. Really?
But our dinner experience was awful. We could not get the time we preferred in the Panorama Room. Fine, except they were not busy when we did get there. Our waiter was a very pompous, rude man. For $38 my husband was still hungry. He ordered cheese for dessert & when it hadn't arrived in 30 minutes, we were told it needed to come to room temperature. If this was an attempt at humor it failed terribly.

Dear valuable guest,

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback about your recent stay at the Hermitage Hotel on Tripadvisor.com. I certainly appreciate being made aware of any service discrepancies as this gives me the opportunity to rectify them.

The Hermitage Hotel prides itself in offering great service to its guests and I regret that in this instance we have fallen short of your expectations.
Operating a hotel in a National Park comes with a huge expense, as every single item has to be road transported to the hotel and even basic living costs and services such as WIFI connection cost more than in a city location. However, this is not an excuse for your poor dining experience in our Panorama Restaurant. I sincerely apologize for my staff’s behaviour. I can assure you that corrective steps have been taken to prevent other guests from experiencing the same.

Once again, thank you for your feedback and we hope we will be able to welcome you again to the Hermitage Hotel in the future.

Best regards,

Alexander Tschampel

We just spent 2 nights at The Hermitage in a Premium Plus room....room 1020. What a room, we even had a balcony to take in the spectacular Mt Cook.

These rooms are great and well worth it although only one or two have these balconies. Very clean, well maintained and a nespresso, worth that alone! We asked for fresh milk and it duly arrived quickly and plenty of it. The service at the front desk excellent...Mala really was terrific.

We checked in late and we werent able to get a table at the restuarant that night so we did the buffet....by the time we got there, around 8ish all the tour groups had been through it and there wasnt too much left. i had the last of the roast lamb but it was tough...disappointing as I love NZ lamb.

The tour desk was fantastic and excellent service.

We did dine at the a la carte the next night and we got there early...well we did book...great service and again the only thing was that Inordered the duck and i wanted it medium rare and so did the chef...it was well done...whilst still tender and edible I am pretty sure they must have own it was over, so was my husbands steak. Now really is it a big deal if it was edible? Maybe not, certainly not according to my husband but if we have requested medium rare and the chef recommends medium rare...that is what I expect, especially at the price. Yes we could have sent it back but we were hungry and by then the restaurant was getting busy. Oh and the chef clearly has an obsession with edible flowers. Just a personal thing, get rid of them or have less. The desserts BTW were a highlight....the goats cheese and ginger cheescake amazing and if you like chocolate then go the chocolate soup!

The only reason why i have rated this as a four is the food, if only the lamb hadnt been tough and the duck had been medium rare the it was a five. It is the little things, at this price that I expect.

We arrived at Mt Cook in what sounded like a rare event…the weather was clear! Check in was excellent, with friendly staff that explained to us. The room was comfortable and well-appointed with a fantastic view of the mountain. It came with a balcony we could sit out on with a glass of wine to soak in the sights. Our package included dinner and breakfast. Dinner was excellent with a good selection to pick from. Breakfast was a buffet with something for everyone. Service was excellent at all time.

The hotel has a well-staffed activity center where we signed up for the glacier lake tour. They had a lot more activities to select from we just ran out of time.

As we drove away the weather changed with low clouds and rain...but even with that the views were spectacular.
We would definitely recommend the Hermitage as a place to stay.

Room Tip: Book a room with a view of the mountain.

We found the staff at the Hermitage to be very friendly and accommodating which was excellent. The views from our room were incredible. The room was a fair bit smaller than I had imagined and a little bit cramped but was well appointed. Dinner in the Panorama Room was quite average (especially considering the price) however the staff were excellent there. Breakfast had a good selection and was enjoyable. Overall I would say that we had a nice stay mainly because of the location and staff, however I'm not sure I could describe it as good value.
