“Rustic, modern, warm and quality food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2014

We were in Mt Cook for 4N and pretty much had all our meals here. It opens at 10:00am which is sleep in friendly and the coffee/food/beer/wine is all very good and portions generous.

This place has personality and a warmth another large venue doesn't along with a pleasant view of the hills. Service is prompt, food tasty and the coffee and hot chocolates excellent. Photos on the walls also provide a history of the place and the books a picture story of the region as well.

I have read that it is expensive, but have to counter that by saying you might pay $NZ23 for the big breakfast, but that's the only meal you will have for the day until dinner. ~$NZ23 is the most expensive breakfast/lunch price with dinner topping out at a little more. When you consider how far it is from everything, it's pretty good value.

I had the mountaineers breakfast and then did a 4+hr hike through the snow and was still full when I returned home. Hamburgers are huge.

For a large portion, good food and friendly service and owners, The Old Mountaineers Cafe is the place to start or end your day.
When in Mt Cook, pop in, have a meal, try the Hermitage and you will find yourself back at the Old Mountaineers more often than not.

Thanks so very much for taking the time to write such a great review. It made our day. Thanks also for finding us here in the village centre, next to the DOC visitor centre, for I hear that the other eating establishment is saying that their restaurants are the only ones open, which of course is not true. Yes, we do like to ensure you have a good breakfast and dinner, too! We're delighted to hear that you loved our food, much of which is either free range or organic, the atmosphere, the service and the view and we hope you enjoyed the incredible hikes in the region. Come back again soon. Travel safe. M&C

“Great food and hospitality”

The food was great. The owners and workers there were very nice. The kids like the chocolate cake very much. I had a steak and it was perfect. We enjoyed the dinner very much.

Great to hear that you enjoyed the food and loved the fair trade organic coffee! If any food is cold, please send it back on the spot at the time, as that can easily be fixed then. On the pricing: serving organic top quality produce and food from artisan bakers is a little more expensive in this remote location where transport is factor, as are the Department of Conservation charges on all businesses operating in national parks. Travel safe.

“Great Cafe!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2014

We called in for lunch after exploring the fantastic Mt cook/Aoraki area. Enjoyed a beautiful lunch in the sunshine whilst taking in the stunning views from the cafe. Good selection of food and keeped the whole family happy with good portion size and great taste! Liked the fact that there were organic meats offered on the menu. Atmosphere was lively and interesting. Seemed to be busy with real life mountaineers!! Highly recommended.

“Ok but too cold in the cafe to enjoy”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2014

We have dined here before and had a good meal a few years ago so on our return visit to Aoraki we decided to go with what we knew. However, on entering the cafe it was cold. We went straight to the fire to try and get some warmth but it wasn't really pumping out enough heat. There was one other log burner at the other end of the room which all the tables were huddled around but it wasn't good enough. As a result all we wanted was to order, eat quickly and get back to the warmth of our motel. I think they need to get some extra heating sources for the cooler winter months which would help with the ambience and the feel. Food was ok,nothing amazing, but all overshadowed by the fact we all ate at a 100 miles an hour with our puffer jackets on to get out as quick as we could. Probably should have got food to go. Did mention the lack of warmth to waiter but he just said it was cold outside. Yep it was...and inside too.

I am sorry that you were cold, despite the huge open log fire and the log burner going flat out.
It has been incredibly chilly this week with temperatures of -10 and we are making plans for a furnace..
