“Methven Resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

We had a great stay! Ann and Mark were wonderful.

The room was immaculate, warm and comfortable. The food was first rate! 5 star!

We will definitely go back and will recommend the Resort to anyone who is looking for a place to stay. The Mt Hutt pick up bus was so convenient - it came right to the front door of the resort, and dropped us off there too.

Room Tip: We stayed 4 in one room and then our eldest was in a room with space for 3. All were great.

The friendly owners bid us a warm welcome and were very thoughtful. Our studio room was spacious (could have slept 4), warm, and its modern ensuite was immaculate.

The hotel is a pick-up point for the Mt Hutt Ski Bus. After a hard day on the slopes, the hotel's hot pools soothed our aching muscles. The evening meal in the restaurant was excellent, the bar is well-stocked, and there are a range of breakfast options available too.

The centre of Methven is a few minutes walk away. We couldn't have asked for more.

We arrived without any pre booking and were greeted by Ann with a warm welcome. OK, the place wasn't booked out, but she previously had a busy weekend so could be forgiven for wishing for a quiet evening. We were shown our room (good value, $120 a double) and then booked in for an evening meal at the restaurant.

There were not too many guests around so Mark and Ann chatted with us about this and that. The meal arrived (Akaroa cod) which we can only describe as succulent and beautifully presented. Great value at $30 a head.

So it was to bed and a very good night's sleep. Thanks for the modern heater in the bedroom which was silent and efficient. Motels/Hotels that still use those ticket-tic fan heaters should be blacklisted! Congrats to the Methven Resort Hotel.

To sum up: A great night's sleep, good food, excellent service.

Don't go past the Methven Resort Hotel. Great too for conferences, weddings and reunions.

Room Tip: Order the Akaroa Cod for dinner!

Recently stayed at Methven Resort with 3 other guys whilst on a work trip around the South Island. Was truly impressed with the service and hospitality shown to us by the owners Mark and Anne. Very clean and comfortable rooms , excellent meals and relaxing surroundings.
Can comfortably recommend.

This winter sports resort is privately owned and operated, so any dis-satisfaction can be resolved at the time. My experience with a coach party, 1 of 3 coaches that day, was brilliant, good room, good food, good and friendly service and a personal welcome and "Goodbye" from the owner. The hotel seems to be benefitting from the uncertainties in Christchurch and is coping very well with a busy summer. The log fires are still very atmospheric, even in the summer. A very good experience.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2012

We were getting a bit desperate for somewhere to stay, having travelled up from Dunedin, and found most places from Timaru onwards booked up, due to the motor racing. We thought we'd try Methven, which was a bit off the beaten track. We passed this resort hotel on the way in, called in, and were given a warm welcome by Mark, for $60 apiece, which compared very well with some of the motels we'd encountered on our travels. We got a lovely room with bath & shower, and a dip in the luxurious pool and hot tubs just when we needed it most after a day's travelling. Then we had an excellent meal in the evening, and they threw in a couple of free drinks, providing a fitting end to our tour of the South Island. The only problem, and it wasn't a major one, was the lack of atmosphere as we were the only ones in the restaurant. There was a coach arriving late in the evening, but they came and went without us seeing them much. But overall, Methven provide a nice haven for two weary travellers. Thank god Ashburton was booked up!

This place was truly awful. I'm looking at the reviews from previous travelers and I think that they have to be the owners or friends of the owners. No one could truly believe that this hotel is "excellent" or "fabulous".
Restaurant was closed, pool was closed, hot spa pools were closed. TV in the room was twenty+ years old and had two channels.
Would strongly recommend that you avoid this place at all costs.
