“One of the best we have stayed at”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2009

We are frequent travellers around NZ and stay at many beautiful lodges but this one is amazing ! We were on our MotoGuzzi motorbike arrived in the rain to a lovely warm fire and lovely spa pool, what more could you want. Helped ourselves to the honesty bar to the value of $51.00, got pizza delivered ...just fantastic. Lovely bath robes with "beluga" , free internet..we had the lodge to ourselves..we hope to come back next November.

My boyfriend and I recently stayed in the self contained Garden Suite at Beluga Lodge and it was the highlight of our holiday. The place was wonderful - suite, garden, spa and gorgeous lounge were all fabulous and really well appointed. Honesty bar was brilliant (well priced and far too tempting) and breakfast and supplies in kitchen were delicious. Arlene and James were superb hosts and we really enjoyed getting to know some of the other guests over a glass of wine in front of the fire. I have travelled a lot all around the world and Beluga ranks in the top 5 for places I have ever stayed. I cannot recommend the place highly enough to friends and family and we are already hatching a plot to come back next year and stay in the cottage.

My fiance and I went to Methven so that we could ride Mt Hutt, and stayed in a Lodge room at Beluga. We found the Lodge to be very conveniently located, very clean and very neat. The hospitality Arlene and James affoarded was fantastic. Breakfasts were cooked to perfection and the drying room for our gear was very handy.

We got a last minute booking for Beluga for one night and will now always choose to stay here if stopping in Methven. Our room was the garden suite (described perfectly by another reviewer) and despite being in almost a totally detached building it was warm and comfortable. I could stay there for weeks! The term 'B+B' can be off-putting, with thoughts of fuddy-duddy proprietors and a list of rules, but Arlene and James are welcoming and accommodating with useful local knowledge. There was a good selection of breakfast options more akin to hotel catering than a small business- and all served with a smile! Definitely the place to stay if heading to Mt Hutt for the snow. Probably even more beautiful in the summer with the relaxing rear garden- we'll need to go back to find out!

We chanced upon this place through wotif.com while touring inland Canterbury and what a find! Arlene, our host, was very welcoming and justifiably proud of what she has to offer her guests. It is a series of little cottages that have been amalgamated into one property and renovated to a very high standard. We had the Garden Suite which was a spacious studio: a walk-in wardrobe/dressing room (no falling over suitcases!), lovely spacious bathroom, well-equipped kitchenette, small desk, dining table and chairs. Outside there is a beautiful garden and a hot tub. Over in the main cottage is a lovely sitting room with a big fireplace, comfortable sofas and shelves of books for guests to enjoy. And then there are all the little added touches: cuddly dressing gowns for a cold night, chocolates in the lounge and in the fridge in the suite (Arlene is a chocoholic!). If you're touring inland Canterbury or going skiing at Mt Hutt, this place should be at the top of your list.

I am usually cautious about B&Bs - the name reminds me of terrible places at the seaside in England! But I took a punt on this place and was so glad I did. What a wonderful place! A beautiful lounge with fire, lovely gardens, and very comfortable rooms (albeit not large). The service was superb - breakfast when and what you want, cooked to order. The decor was comfortable and elegant There's an open kitchen for snacks, coffee etc and a nice touch is the honesty bar. You really do feel like you've borrowed a rich friend's country home! A real find and we will certainly be back.

  • Liked — The quietness, the comfortable bed, the lovely gards!
  • Disliked — TVs in room should be upgraded (14" doesn't cut it these days)

After 5 nights in one of SkiTime Luxury Villa (cf. my other review), we moved to this lodge. Everything in this small lodge (4 rooms + 2 'suites' with kitchenette + 1 cottage) is wonderful and friendly: the comfortable sofa around the fire place, the kitchen, the lovely garden and the rooms (although quite small). I would recommend booking one of the suite as the difference in price is insignificant but there is a fair difference in size (NZD 210 for a room vs NZD 250 for a suite). The lodge has a computer room (free to surf) and a nice ski shoes dry room which is heated. The only minus is the shower in room 4 which has low water pressure.
