“Red Stag Restaurant, Fairlie”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

Returning from Queenstown towards Christchurch, we stopped overnight at Fairlie Top Ten Caravan Park. This was not a good choice as this was the least pleasing of the seven or eight parks we used while touring the South Island with fairly limited facilities and rather disinterested staff. We were well compensated however by our discovery of the Red Stag restaurant situated on the edge of the small town on the main road from Fairlie to Queenstown. Beautiful gardens and a lovely atmosphere in very comfortable surroundings, excellent attentive service and a memorable meal including venison and dory fish, all in all another discreetly hidden treasure in a country where we found both the quality of food and the quality of service exceptionally and consistently high.

“Gorgeous Food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

This restaurant has changed hands frequently, but we always check it out when we are through, as we have lots of good memories of the place and the people.

The current operators are relatively new, but look like they are making a huge impact already. We went along on a Monday night and there were in the vicinity of 20 diners. Apparently, the night before there were 90. They are on the tourist route, but get an equal quantity of local and tourist diners.

What a fabulous meal we had. The "Pithivier" a goats cheese tart with a poached, glazed pear was the sort of dish that you close your eyes and go to heaven on! Truly divine. After that, the rest of the meal, though excellent, just couldn't surpass that entree. I had the beef fillet with seasonal veg and asparagus and for dessert a spice pear and frangipani tart. All beautifully cooked and presented and not to be faulted. My husband had the mushroom soup (also distinctive) and the vegetarian dish for a main.

My husband and son ate there on a previous trip for lunch and my son raved about the soup that he had.

We will absolutely visit again. It is a gorgeous old building, with great dining options and the new operators are bringing something top notch and memorable to Fairlie. Well done!

The wine list, although, not extensive, carried quality wines.

“A gem in Fairlie”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2012

We were in Fairlie this past weekend visiting friends who took us to the Red Stag. What a great surprise to find a restaurant that was top notch and superb food in Fairlie. We live in Queenstown and the Red Stag puts most places in queenstown to shame with the quality of the food. This was the first night of the new summer menu (December 1st). The four of us were treated to a sample platter of the entrees. There was a selection of shrimp skewers, duck egg rolls, a goat cheese tart thing with a fancy name and wonderful flavour, a watermelon salad, and a shot glass of pumpkin soup. James the chef may have been a bit nervous being a new menu, but everything was excellent. The duck egg rolls were very good. We each had different mains, venison, beef fillet, stuffed chicken breast. Again all prepared to perfection and as ordered. If you are traveling through Fairlie stop here for a meal (they serve lunch and dinner). I would recommend the Red Stag over any place in Geraldine or Tekapo as a stop. Well done James and Riki !!

“Great tastes, presented well, Value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2012

Restaurant is located in the Country town of Fairlie in the McKenzie Country South Island. The restaurant is located on the fringe of the town on the main road from Fairlie to Mt Cook and Queenstown.
Although not extensive the menu does offer a great range of tastes, the food is cooked to perfection (Fish still moist) and presented well on the plate. The helpings are generous and come as a complete balanced meal without the need to add extra's. In short value for money.
The wine list is limited and could be improved on.

The converted house with a wide verandah provides comfort for dining and there is an open fire in the main dining room.

Service was excellent, with helpful advice on menu choices and flavours.

Thank you very much for your review! It was most helpful and as we only opened in march there is still much, much more we want to do! We now FINALLY have our wine list up & running (after much serious thought & cheerful tasting!) We do pride ourselves in preparing fresh honest food, right from the raw ingredient. With the opinion of anything we can buy we can make here and this is exactly what we do! With our twist of course! Trying to use as much locally sourced products as possible & with spring here our herb patch is starting to sprout so excitement is in the air! We feel that focusing on each detail and providing our very best service & food will hopefully create a great overall dining experience for our guests!

We look forward to having you back with us again at the Red Stag and sincerely thank you for taking the time to kindly write a review!
