“Overnight in Fairlie”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2014

We found the park really great for an overnight stay in our rented Kea Campervan. The facilities although older really suited the needs of the 3 families travelling the South Island together. The kitchen was perfect for cooking our dinner and all having a nice warm area to sit. We then moved to the TV room which was fantastic, nice comfy lounges and again a nice warm heater. The showers and toilets were very neat and clean. Would definitely recommend, suited our needs perfectly.

Stayed five nights 25th-30th March. The room I booked wasn't within the holiday park complex but at MacKenzie Motels which are 5x studio rooms they own close to town. Clean, tidy, spacious with fridge, tv and bathroom. Roomy enough place with tea/coffee, heaps of plates/cutlery, microwave/toaster. For the cost I paid I was very impressed. Special thanks to Annie and Tamar. Both professional to deal with and responded promptly to emails.

Dated and worn site but - for once, given this is a Top 10 site - plenty of room per pitch. Satisfactory for an overnight stop in a motorhome. Bring your own supper with you - regret very little on offer in small town not geared up for tourists.

If you have paid to have a bed made up, make sure before you retire to bed that it consists of
more than a sheet and a duvet cover, and if its the "cell" beside the toilet asked to be moved
so you are not woken by punters all hours of the morning.
Have a fellow camper spit on you in the morning to save using their shower.

Room Tip: Top tip - avoid this hole

Location excellent . Room small , staff new and from abroad so unable to help with much . Clean room but dark . Advertised as full kitchen but only a ring and microwave . Glad only staying for one night . Paid for DVD but no player in room . Could have done with info in room about facilities and local restaurants .

My partner and I stayed in a self contained unit at the Top 10 in Fairlie.
Although the unit was of age and quite old fashioned, it was very clean and nicely presented.
The bed was very comfortable and the bedding cosy and warm.
Unfortunately I can't say the same positive things about Fairlie city centre.

We were advised by tourist radio to consider this place instead of staying in Lake Tekapo. Relax in parkland, play chess on the giant chessboard, enjoy a private hot tub and free Internet... Well how could we resist. Except the Internet wasn't free, the gigantic chess set was 64 bricks in the ground and chess pieces carved from local stone that had been so mistreated, you could only recognise about 3 of the chess pieces, what hot tub and the whole place looked badly in need of a major overhaul. The bathrooms had been repainted but this was more noticeable by the paint drips on the floor than the quality of the paint job, the toilet doors were all starting to swell from water seepage although are they painted over the swelling, I reckon they might get another few months out of it.
The town had a bakery that closed at 4, one restaurant closed for major repair and one closed for holidays. They did however have a pizza place which turned out to be the only highlight in our stay. My advice would definitely be to stop at Lake Tekapo instead of here.
