“Ok if you want to do day trips out of Fairlie.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2012 via mobile

We found this poor value for money. The park itself wasn't as nice some of the top 10 parks that we've been to. The motel room was basic - we've stayed in much nicer hotels chains for less. Free wifi was one positive. Not a lot to do in Fairlie itself.

We booked the '1 bedroom Cottage Park Motel' unit (Unit #9). The good news is that the description given for this unit in the park's website is accurate, and so is the photo. The unit is pretty much brand new, spacious (except for the kitchen facilities, which are extremely cramped), well equipped and with a very comfortable bed. There is indeed not only free WiFi, but even a PC provided, something I've never encountered before. So far, so good.

The bad news is what is not said, and what is not shown, and that is that this unit is located immediately adjacent to the main Fairlie/Geraldine main road, a mere 30 metres or so away. From the balcony seen in the photo, you look right at this road. It is extremely busy - huge freight lorries thunder past.

The unit is not part of the main park. It's in a sort of annexe area, the access to which requires leaving the park and finding a separate street entrance - you are thus remote from the park facilities.

When I pay NZ$125 for a campsite location I expect lawns, trees, maybe water, birds and hopefully reasonable peace and quiet. I don't expect to be located right next to a very busy and noisy highway, no mention of which is made in the park's material, perhaps not surprisingly.

This review concerns Unit #9 only and is not meant to imply critcism of the wider park facilities (which we couldn't see much of, we were so far away); they may be perfectly OK. But if you're thinking of booking his unit on the strength of the website blurb, do so in the knowledge that in a very unfortunate location.

Room Tip: If you want peace and quiet, avoid Unit #9!

We didn't get to stay here. Would liked to have. The place looked great. Staff members were initially friendly (if a bit too smart for their own good!), however, turned postively chilly when I questioned why the only heater in the room wasn't working. I managed to extract a we'll-check-it-if-you-check -in-first" (show us your money!). Perhaps we are stupid and couldn't get the relic working, but come on guys, would it hurt to leave your tweeting/ facebook updating for 5 mins to check it out for us and gain a customer to sing your praises? When you're travelling with small kids, it's nice to have assurance of a warm place to sleep before checking in. (We quickly moved on to a Fairlie motel which had about 10 working heaters and a slightly less sassy reception!)

We stayed here as the first night of of our campervan holiday around the South island. Lovely quiet location but not the cleanest of Top 10's but as always, good value for money. The shower block was definitely in need of some modernisation.

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of our Rugby World Cup trip and found it a perfect secluded hideaway. Used it as a base to visit Mount Cook and the surrounding area. Facilities very clean and site was very quiet but within minutes of the small town. A great plus was the free wifi which was much appreciated especially as some other Top 10 sites had charged $20 a day for wifi. Many thanks for a comfortable stay.

We stayed 4 nights in a standard cabin because of their great winter deal. The room was quite simple and small but practical. They have a very modern kitchen with warm dining space. In addition, free fast internet access was a great option for us!

I used to come here as a kid, not much has changed it's still a good ground. Nice and close to Lake Opuha and the free WiFi is a plus.
