“Luxury!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2012

As the hostel was fully booked, we had a room in a cottage. Well what to say, I could live there for weeks: huge lounge with log fire, spacious room, large and cosy bed, 2 large showers, 2 toilets. Great and well equipped kitchens, lovely staff, very good locations.

The only drawback the trains running at night as they may disturb you. Bring earplugs and problem solved.

Room Tip: book a double in the cottage if you are a couple!

We stayed here for our final night and what a night to finish on. Although it is a hostel we had a cottage which has everything and is all yours.

What made the stay that extra special was the service we received. We were having trouble booking our last night. We needed a stop between Franz Josef and Christchurch and we were finding places either fully booked, out of our price range or plain rock bottom. So we decided to spend a tad more money and go for this. At first we were told that the 6 sleep cottage we chose was booked but they offered us the 8 bed cottage for the same price. Jackpot.

As for the cottage itself, well I could live there everyday. OK it might need slight updating but it's perfectly acceptable. We were first greeted by warmth, as the fire was already burning away, and that just made the night. Plenty of equipment and although no TV we didn't miss it. It was fun enough all around the fire playing games/chatting. Also there was no fighting for showers and toilets. Our 8 sleep cottage had 1 seperate toilet, 1 toilet shower combined and a seperate shower. 2 double bedrooms and a 4 sleep room, a single bed and a double bed bunk (with a single above).

This was our favorite spot to stay during our week of travel in New Zealand. We loved the cozy wood stove and country surroundings. Each couple had their own individual room that locked. There were two showers and toilets. The facility was well equipped and in a great location. I would recommend making the trek from Greymouth to Christchurch with plans to stay in Arthurs Pass. Great price, too!!

Room Tip: A Godsend for the travelers that had not planned ahead and needed petrol to make it to Christchurch...

one of my fave hostels we visited on our 4 week trip. we arrived after check in but as we phoned ahead they had left instructions for room acess.
we were in a modern double room which had a coverd walkway to the bathroom which was fine on the day were there but might be a bit chilly in the midst of winter...take warm jammies if you are planning on staying in one of these rooms in winter.
the room was warm and the bed comfy.
the YHA itself is spread across both sides of the road but the bit we used was the same side as the reception...the kitchen was clean, modern and pleasant and well appointed.
up stairs there is a lounge and internet access.
a word of warning...arthurs pass village has very little in the way of evening entertainment and food etc so bring provisions with you and enjoy the company of your fellow travellers.
arthurs pass is a lovely spot would love to go back and i wouldnt hesitate to go back to the hostel.
thanks again YHA NZ you have showed up your European counterparts.

Room Tip: the double rooms appear to be in the modern block.

Thank you for your kind review.

Just to clarify, the building we refer to as The Historic Lodge is across the road from where you stayed. This is the oldest purpose built hostel in the country, completed in 1955. There were other YHA hostels prior to 1955, mostly in the Banks Peninsula area, but they were all buildings that had started their lives being used for other purposes.

The building that you stayed in was built in the 70's and extensively modified and expanded over the years to it's present form.

Mountain House is a great place to relax and get away from the hustle of the bigger cities for a few days. The management is what really makes this place stand out. They are friendly and extremely helpful and knowledgable with advice on hiking and things to do in the area. The accommodations are varied and can suit every need. I had a room to myself upstairs off the lounge and was extremely pleased. It was low season, so noise from the lounge was not an issue, however, at a different time of the year, this room may have noise issues. The noise from the road is not a problem, as traffic is almost non-existent over night. The bed was warm and comfy and the room was very pleasing. The stunning mountain views from my windows could not be more fabulous. The kitchen area is large and well appointed and impressively clean! There is not much for groceries available in Arthurs Pass, so plan ahead to bring enough supplies if you want to cook for yourself. If not, there are a handful of pleasent dining and drinking establishments in town to check out. The bathrooms also are impressively clean and the lounge is comfy with wonderful mountain views.

If you are planning on doing a lot of hiking, it is best to have your own transportation. However, even if you are on foot, there are still many trails withing walking distance to keep you occupied for several days. I came by train, and Mountain House was a great place to stop to break up the coast to coast journey. Bad weather can be an issue here. But even when the weather is bad, the place is so clean and cosy, well heated and friendly, that it is still a pleasure to hang out while waiting for the weather to improve. And if all else fails, watching the antics of the ever present kea pestering the unsuspecting car or bus visitors stopping for gas or a cup of coffee will keep you amused for hours!

I would highly recommend Mountain House to solo travelers, families, small groups of friends, and those especially into hiking, the mountains, and a quiet, small town experience. It is NOT a place for noisy partiers and thrill seekers and those not capable of appreciating this remote and very special location.

Apart from the dormitory and other accommodation Mountain House has 2 self contained cottages you can stay in. Check their website for accommodation options they are fantastic. No restrictions on the number of nights you have to stay and they are very flexible because they have a selection of options to choose from.

We stayed in Cottage number 4 with 3 double bed rooms. It had a fireplace with wood provided, an excellent kitchen, dining room and lounge. Tt was perfect for a group and excellent rates. Conveniently located right in town and very well maintained. We would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in town and would stay there again.

The beds and bedrooms were comfortable but not luxurious. The bathroom was a tiny bit dated with a shower curtain rather than enclosure and one of the NZ shower heads where the pressure can't be adjusted.

Had a dbl room in one of the cottages which was more like a shared self-catering place than youth hostel. Big lounge, dining room and kitchen with two showers and toilets between 6-perfect! Even had a fire for the winter. Lovely big room with high ceilings and oldsash window. V cute.
