5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2014 via mobile

Pete gave us a free upgrade as we were staying 2 nights and rooms were fully booked friday night.
Weather was great and we enjoyed Arturs Pass so much we stayed 3 nights!
Room was tidy, warm and clean.
Helpful host gave us tips on where to hike, and eat and morning weather forecasts.
Amber cleaned and left fresh towels in our room daily - 5 star service.
Ate every night at Wobbly Kea. Good food, generous portions, great music, beer - and the best espresso coffees in the mornings.
And hiking around this area is simply fantastic!

Hi, Glad you enjoyed the upgrade and every part of your stay. It's sometimes tricky finding a dry place for a walk, so happy to point you in the right direction. Some days the conditions can be totally different just 10kms down the road. Great to hear that Amber looked after you so well while we were away. Thanks for staying.

Although this was possibly the most "rustic" place that we stayed during our two weeks in New Zealand, we slept great and were very happy that we were able to stay here. We had a large place for just the two of us. It was warm and had everything we needed. We only stayed one night, but the manager watched over our bags while we hiked during the day. He also gave us some great tips of where to go hike as it was raining, but the hike he led us to was in a area that it was not raining. Also, when we got back to pick up our things, he had found several very important things that we had left in the room and had it ready for us to pick up also. I would stay here again if I am ever lucky enough to visit this area again. We did not find a lot of great food around, so next time I would ask the manager to make some suggestions.

Hi, thanks for your great review. The weather can be a bit hard to read at times, glad we got it right for you. Unfortunately there are only 2 evening restaurants in town, so choices are limited. When you come back next time, we'd love to have you stay again. Thanks, Pete and Fi

The unit we had was one of the older ones so was a bit dated, but very clean and very well equipped. They had thought of everything. Pete and Fi were so friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome. It's an easy walk into the village for the cafes and shops, although we were glad that we had bought fresh food on the way as the choice is a bit limited. We were lucky with the weather so made the most of a happy stay.

The unit (medium family) was not big, but enough for us, good locking units, shower was great, heater great, there are electric blanquets too. All very clean. THe place is near all in town. Is near to the train tracks and road, but this is the same for nearly all places in town as the tracks and road follow the pass as the buildings in the town, all in the long not very wide space near the river. We did not have any problema with noises, great sleep although the trains goes by night and we are at the nearest unit to the tracks.

We stayed for a single night at this beautiful place and felt we should have stayed longer. The kind folks running the place were fabulous, had a smile on their face and always ready to help out. The rooms themselves were really cosy, warm and clean. We rented two cabins - the bigger one with the gas fireplaces for the folks and the slightly smaller one for us.

We would have extended our stay, but a storm front moving in made us chase the sun north. Would highly recommend this place to people visiting Arthur's pass.

Arriving very late at night, the owner was nonetheless most helpful at helping us plan out our hikes, meals, and route the next day. He was also very kind and allowed us to stay a little beyond checkout time so that we could shower after the very enjoyable hikes in the area. Room very cosy, with nice touches like electric blankets. Terrific!

Paying exorbitant prices for mediocre hotels and rooms on a recent trip to NZ, I felt I was an expert at less-than-perfect. I was starting to think the famous Kiwi hospitality and friendliness was a plastered-on, pained smile while a hand dug into your wallet...THEN, I stumbled upon the Arthur's Pass Alpine Motel! What a wonderful experience, for a reasonable price! The cabins are nice an homey, spotlessly clean, quiet (even on a holiday week). Fi and Pete Neale are welcoming, warm and interested in their guests and environment. They LIKE Keas, which was a deciding factor for me, personally. So many folks/locals in the alpine regions do not seem to know what treasures they have. I came to Arthur's Pass solely to see these wonderful birds, and the other avian fauna of the area. I would go back and stay for a week, and would (and have) recommended this lovely place to my friends. Revived my sense of true hospitality that has made NZ a treasured destination all across the globe.

Wow, thanks for your fantastic and glowing review. We're glad we were able to, in someway, "salvage" your trip. We are very passionate about Arthur's Pass and love to share our knowledge of the area. we feel very privileged to be able to live here. The Kea are an amazing bird, just sometimes a little bit cheeky and over inquisitive. Thanks for staying with us, Pete and Fi.
