“Superb!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

What a shame that last man could not get to the restaurant 1/2 an hour earlier. He really missed a treat. We all had the sole and all were impressed. Very memorable.

“DONT GO PAST THE NOR'WESTER”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

Brilliant café-restaurant in handy location en route from Chch to the Lewis Pass or north to Kaikoura. The atmosphere is warm and homely - the coffee absolutely brilliant. The counter has a range of mouthwatering cakes and other prepared delicious treats. A very tempting array.

“Great cafe but needs to keep on the ball....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

I visited the Nor'wester Cafe in August as it has always been a favourite stop for our family. Past stops have always lived up to the anticipation of excellent food and service. On this occasion something slipped. We ordered the "sharing plate" which was $34.00 for 2 persons. It promised smoked salmon, soup, cheese, garlic bread, deep fried parmesan dumplings with different sauces amongst other items. All sounded good. What arrived was a plate with a variety of could be called fairly miniscule items. 2 very small slices of smoked salmon, 2 "dolls" house pots of soup which were fascinatingly tiny.... the sauces were in small plates and half way through trying everything, we had to ask which sauce (both delicious) went with what. By and large what we were supplied with was good but the soup really amused us as to how it should be eaten. We resorted to pouring it on the garlic bread or dipping crusts in it but it was most likely less than 2 spoons of soup if that. Although everything was tiny and I am not suggesting they be very large portions, 1 or more of the items could be larger and if needed to maintain the profit level, the portion of garlic bread could be reduced by a slice. somethings in presentation work very well but dolls house bowls of soup and a very small sliver of smoked salmon does not. we look forward to our next visit and hope this input is taken in the right vein. its a great cafe well worth the stop but presentation needs to be in step with the great food it has.

“A rural gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

This is one of our most popular weekend brunch destinations located in Amberley about 30 minutes from Oxford on the main highway north of Christchurch. The food is superb and the staff friendly and attentive. We had a delicious creamy mushroom soup accompanied with srcummy honey and sunflower seed bread followed by Stewart Island oysters cooked in tempura batter and our favourite tipple the fantastic Terrace Edge Pinot Gris...a satisfying way to enjoy a leisurely Sunday. If you are travelling the main road it is worthy of a stop.
