“Consistently top-class cafe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

The continuing search for Canterbury's best breakfast brought us to this Amberley eatery en route to Hanmer Springs. And an excellent job they did too,... The Windjammer Breakfast was a generous helping of herb sausage, black pudding, bacon, poached eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms and potato hash. Served with doorstop toast.. What was immediately apparent was that the ingredients were all carefully chosen and all fresh. Nice to see a real potato hash rather than those nasty commercial hash-browns that so many places serve. And everything was perfectly cooked. Mrs. Glutton chose the chicken Caesar salad and thought it wonderful;. This was our fifth visit to this cafe and it seems to get better every time. Sharp service [water refilled without asking etc.] and welcoming ambience. We shall return. And yes, this is my current pick for Canterbury's best breakfast....

“Always Consistently Good”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

This is opne of our favourite cafes in New Zealand. Less than an hour's drive north of Christchurch, this cafe has friendly, welcoming staff who do their jobs well. I had tempura battered gurnard and my wife had seared scallops, and both were generously proportioned, without being over the top - beautifully presented and cooked to a "t". Nice to have the food served on hot plates. This place is always busy; a sign of its popularity and a pretty good indication that it's worth visiting. We'll be back.

“Great cafe”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2012

Great cafe to stop for lunch on the way south. We had a wonderful curry pumpkin soup with fab bread. Lots of choice for kids and the staff were nice and friendly. Thought it was a bit over priced so that is why they don't get a excellent.

“Well worth a stop”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012

My husband and I stopped for brunch as we passed through Amberley and were very pleased we did. Food was fantastic and it wasn't a problem when my husband wanted to add spinach and mushrooms to his eggs benedict. Service was friendly and attentive. Excellent value for money as we had an entertainment card so got 25% off but would have been good value without this.

“Warm, welcoming, a little bit noisy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2012

Stopped at Nor'Wester en route home from Chch for Sunday lunch with family, and we had a great time. As others have noted, the service is just right, even when the place is full and the food - venison, chicken, fish of the day and pizza - all went down very well.
The only drawback was the ambient noise level, which got quite high at times, and made conversation a bit challenging for our 70+ year old companions.
Four lunch mains, two coffees and a cookie for the road was just over $100, and we got a seat by the fire which we sorely needed after a couple days in freezing Chch!
All in all, recommended
