“Archetypal swiss berghotel, in a world apart from the resorts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2012

In winter and early spring this berghotel is a good base for ski-mountaineering in the preserved St Antönien valley. Avoiding the car-bound resort crowds and mingling with fellow Skitour enthusiasts is of course part of the appeal of staying in a place like this. This is something that iyou cannot buy!. It of course also the case as in any mountain hut, but in a berghotel you get on top of this a warmth and Gemütlichkeit that is not present in all mountain huts, at least in the western alps.
The decor is nice, thoufh classic by Berghotel standards, the terrace also. The food is OK. The owners are nice. They have added a a new building that offers a higher standard of modern comfort for those who cannot dispense with it.

We stayed here with friends and family, arriving by public transport (Train to Küblis then the post bus to St. Antönien, Rüti - all details available on ww.cff.ch). From the bus stop, you have another 1 hour walk (uphill of course - head towards the mountains). Despite the signs indicating a nice footpath to Sulzfluh on the left, it's faster to keep on the road. Taxi is available if preferred.

Rooms are available - doubles (the romantic option) or dormitory - I think there are 6 or 8 in a shared room. The price is not much more for a double. Rooms are candlelit, but there is electricity in the rest of the hotel. Watch out though - prices are per person, so if you are travelling as a family the price will mount pretty quickly. Included in the price is an evening meal and breakfast. Both were quite fine. The local wine was excellent and they have a good selection of beer.

The fittings and décor are all top quality. The shared showers/toilets are impeccably clean (of course, this is Switzerland). Don't pack high-heels/fancy shoes --- you leave your shoes in the "ShoeRoom" and wear house slippers.

There is a hot tub/jacuzzi available (pictures on the website).

Surrounding countryside is, of course, the reason you go. It is very beautiful. Lots of limestone so there are caves, rocks, boulders. For those who like climbing (my son for instance) lots of bouldering/practice opportunities. The lake is 20 minutes walk away and has 2 rowing boats which are available for anyone to use (free of charge). Water is crystal clear and very cold.

There are off-road scooters/trottinettes/Kick scooters available for rent so that you don't have to walk down. You can scoot to St. Antonien (where you can catch the bus) - budget 30 minutes or all the way to Kublis (budget 1 hour). You can reserve a scooter ahead of time from the manager at the hotel. If there are none available you can go in the direction of the lake where there is a stock available for St.Antonien only. It works on the honour system - you put 5CHF in a box and take a scooter and a helmet.

I thought the staff were great - the manager is very efficient and runs a tight ship!

In summary - a beautiful place for a weekend getaway for adults.

Room Tip: I think it's worthwhile paying the extra for a double if there are two of you rather than the sh...
