We have just returned from The Vera Beach Club and this was our second visit in 3 years. We are members of what was Petchey Leisure's Club Infiniti and this is meant to be one of their prime resorts. Last time we were there we went half board and complained about the food - I would say that little has changed on this front apart from the pizza option and take away roast chickens being removed from the menu.
When we arrived, we were not sure what to expect this time because of the severe flooding last autumn that came right through this resort. We were, therefore, extremely impressed to see the gardens, exterior grounds and apartment exteriors had been put back to their original condition and the resort, on the outside, looked great.
Because we thought the one bed apartment that we had on our last visit was a little small, we treated ourselves and booked a two bed apartment for this holiday. At this resort, a two bed apartment is on two levels and is therefore a "little house". This was going to mean that we all had a bed for a change and nobody was going to have to take the sofa bed.
We checked in when we arrived and were given the keys to our house and so we unloaded our car and took our luggage round. We went upstairs first and looked at the two bedrooms and bathroom and were very pleased with what we saw. Then we went to explore downstairs. Here we found a second bathroom, with loo and shower - pleasing. A living room with table, chairs, sofa and tv. Then we looked into the kitchen and were just stunned - a number of units, sink, two electric hob rings, a microwave and a small fridge standing to one side. There was no oven, no washing machine and no dishwasher, all appliances that had been in the apartments prior to the flooding, all appliances that we were advised would be in the kitchen at time of booking were not there and nothing from Petchey/MGM to say otherwise. We had brought clothes for a week on the basis that we knew we would be able to wash out there and we also eat in quite a lot in the evenings as we know that the food on site is of poor quality and that there are not many restaurants in the immediate vicinity. It was not possible to cook a meal in this kitchen.
We went back to Reception to complain and we were advised that the new owners had instructed that the kitchens were to be put back in this format and this is how they would be in future. The Reception staff were very sympathetic and had received lots of complaints about these apartments. We were fortunate enough to be a small enough family to be moved to a one bed upstairs apartment that was not affected by the flooding and so still had all of the contracted facilities but we were back to using the sofa bed!
Over the next few days we found that the phones weren't working and were told by staff that they had no idea when these were going to be fixed - a more minor inconvenience really but you do have to walk to a reception whenever you want something and you cannot leave a landline number with family at home. There used to be an exceptionally good Kids Club at this resort and our daughter particularly liked this club - this too has gone and there is now no Kids Club. This resort is always advertised as having two restaurants but on both our visits, the smarter one has been closed, apart from for breakfast, so the only option on site is the pool bar. The evening entertainment, ie Flamenco Dancers etc, also appears to have been washed away.
I must stress that the staff at this resort were extremely helpful, whether they be Reception, bar staff or the ladies who clean the rooms. The grounds of the resort are lovely and the pool area is kept very well and there is never any trouble getting a sun bed.
However, if you are a family traveling and want full facilities, this resort no longer provides. I had the feeling that the new owners really don't care a great deal and would not be surprised to see Petchey/MGM no longer offering this resort to members soon. Other guests were also extremely angry and disappointed with the two bed apartments whilst we were there but we're unable to move as they were larger families.
Sadly, due to the way that these apartments have been significantly downgraded, we will not now be returning. I must also stress that my review of the facilities within the apartments is for Petchey/MGM apartments only. Your experience may be very different in a Private let.
