“Perfectly acceptable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2014

Stayed here for a few days recently. The hotel is conveniently situated about 10 minutes walk into Rhayader and right next to Gigrin Farm where they feed the red kites each afternoon. I used to come to this hotel in the 1990s for meetings but had never actually stayed there. It has changed ownership since then. All the staff were very pleasant and helpful. The breakfast was good, home made fresh fruit salad and well cooked full English. We dined there one night and the meal was very tasty and reasonably priced, with quite a good selection. The restaurant was full. Our room was OK, modern bathroom and very comfortable bed, good CH. The furniture was old-fashioned, in keeping with the building, but was somewhat rickety. The hotel is set at right angles to the main road and my only real gripe was that our room, which was at the front with quite a nice view, faced up the road and the curtains were very thin. Consequently, the room was lit up during the night every time a car came down the hill from Rhayader.

We enjoyed this very individual hotel. The appearance is charming and the welcome warm. We particularly enjoyed our dinner there. I suspect there were a lot more than residents for dinner. The food was delicious and the service well up to standard. Would certainly use it again.

Just spent a couple of nights b/b at what was a workhouse but is now a great hotel. The staff, rooms and the breakfast were so good we decided to have our evening meal there well worth a visit. From our room we could see the Red Kites at Grigin Farm which is 5 mins from the hotel they feed them at 3pm and it is a sight worth seeing. We also visited the Elan Valley to the dams and the scenery is wonderful it really is a place to visit. This is the first time we have been to mid Wales and Cambrian Mountains but we will certainly go again.

Room Tip: Our room 1 & 2 had own private landing area.

I have just returned from this hotel 12/04/2014 and found it to be the best place yet from deals on KGB, Groupon and living deals, it is quirky and very hospitable, we had the Den which was outside in the courtyard up steps, when you entered it was a suite on its own, lounge area with settee, table and chairs, enclosed shower and bedroom area, it has oak beams and something you would wish for at home.
The meals were very well presented and worth every penny you paid which was not a great deal for what you got, my partner and I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a nice relaxing few days away from the maddening crowds.

Room Tip: Having spoken to a number of residents it would appear that all rooms are in a different theme and a...

Good value. Helpful staff. Excellent location. Good food at dinner and breakfast. The building is in need of a lot of renovation and the room was somewhat dated, but this was not an issue - it depends what you like and expect.

My partner had booked two nights using Groupon discount vouchers; the main purpose of the visit was a romantic break for my birthday. This was our first visit to this area of Wales and to this particular hotel. On approaching the Hotel from the outside it appeared to have an enduring and romantic charm all of its own. The entrance to was very warm and welcoming with what appeared to be an original flag stone floor possibly dating back to its Victorian workhouse days. HOWEVER I visited the toilet and there was no light but more than that the receptionist didn't seemed that bothered. The Reception area was more than a let down, and upon seeing this if we had NOT booked and just seen the Hotel from the road and decided to stay on the off chance of a room, I must admit we would have turned around on our heels and left. I am certain a few pound spent in this crucial area would see dividends in both appearance and the overall good feel and vibe of the Hotel, because as the saying goes you never get a second chance to make a first impression (and they do count).
The room we stayed in was the Rookery and it was more like a suite than a room. Upon entering it was warm and inviting, the bedroom had a four poster bed, in the bath room although there was no shower there was a corner bath and it did have a hand shower attachment, which made up for no shower there was even a bidet. That said, there were downsides, the room was on the top floor up 4 flights of stairs with no offer of help with our bags. In the room we stayed, the view from the window was marred by a pile of rubbish, there is significant room for improvement with the décor, but it's more the attention to detail in most areas that needs addressing. On the whole the bed was very comfortable and the room was more than adequate for our needs, and we thought great value for the money that had been paid, and with a little TLC would be extremely good value for the normal tariff or possibly a little more.
I do believe the owners are addressing this room by room and passing by other rooms there is evidence of this, but lets face it Rome wasn't built in a day, and they are trying (I would however question the choice of beige carpets everywhere?).
The cooked breakfast was excellent and there was a good choice of cereals and fruit, the service good, we did not eat in the restaurant so cannot comment, although by the talk at breakfast by other guests it is excellent.
The Hotel is an excellent base to explore the surrounding area and with the Red Kite feeding centre only a 5 minute walk away it's more than worth a visit, even though you can see the Kites from the Hotel. The Elan Valley with its reservoirs and dams are about 10 minutes away by car and offers quite spectacular views, and are ideal for walkers also the visitor centre is well worth a look, Rhayader is a pretty town and just a short walk from the Hotel. It has some nice shops and plenty of pubs so well worth a visit.
To sum up although there are obvious downsides to the Hotel we were very satisfied with our visit and room and found it extremely good value for what had been paid. Would we have paid full price? for our room certainly not, but with a little TLC absolutely every time.

I would make the strongest recommendation and plea to the owners to spend some money on the reception area first and foremost, because this is the first point of call for all guests and also to tidy up the area at the back, because this has the potential to be a great Hotel and not just an ordinary one.

Room Tip: I would recommend the Rookery as it's very spacious, more of a suite than room. Although it'...

Booked 3 rooms using discount vouchers for B&B. Visited this hotel about 12 years ago for a Sunday Lunch so knew it was an old building that used to be a workhouse. Although there is room for improvement with décor in some areas the rooms we had were more than adequate. The place was warm and there was plenty of hot water. Some rooms have showers others baths so if you prefer one or the other best to ask on booking. We had 3 rooms in main building ( there are some in courtyard) and some on the top floor are up 4 flights (no lift) so again ask on booking. The breakfasts were good and the food in the restaurant was good enough to ensure we ate there all three nights.
The Red Kite feeding centre is a 5 minute walk away and well worth a visit, The Elan dams are about 15 mins away and are quite spectacular. Ideal for walkers or bikers.
Although overall my rating is average ( what I would rate as 3*) we were well satisfied with our visit and found it very good value for what we paid.
