“Avoid Room 12”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2009

I stayed here for three nights over Easter Weekend.

The hotel is well situated and just off the A19 bypass around Selby. The grounds appear to be in need of maintenance and with a littlle gardening care they could be quite welcoming. At the time of the visit they were not. Lots of free parking.

Check-in was smooth enough, having made reservations previously. Room 12 is to be avoided. It is immediately above a childrens indoor play area, and the access door is constantly opening and BANGING closed. This could be easily solved by adjusting the automatic closer, or even installing a couple of rubber door stoppers to deaden the constant bang-bang-bang. As regards a complaint to the manageress:- this brought forth the patronising remark that no-one had complained before. I am not sure whether that means no-one had complained to HER before, or just generally. Regardless, I am not sure if the fact that there were no previous complaints is relevant.?? Avoid the Room 12.

The restuarant area is clean and the food very good. No complaints about breakfasts or evening meal. The pub area is also pretty good. Although why the pub closes down at 10.30p.m. is beyond me. Perhaps they don't open late on holiday weekends.

Apart from the previously mentioned trouble with room 12, the hotel room was clean and the hotel reasonably quiet. This area (Selby) is not blessed with much choice when it comes to hotels, and so it would seem that when you have little competition, service and amenities suffer a bit. The hotels strong point is the restaurant and the staff somewhat compensate for the above described manager.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2008

After a busy sightseeing day in York, what we wanted was a nice clean hotel with a decent pub & restaurant. The New Country Inn fitted the bill nicely at a good value £52.50 per night.

If you are after frills then this isn't the place for you. Situated 20 minutes south of York it is a smart hotel (similar to premier inn) which has a pub/restaurant to the side. It is strangely situated in the middle of an industrial estate so you are not within walking distance of anything else except the adjoined Wishing Well pub.

The room we had was huge. There was a z-bed for my 5 year old which he loved. The bathroom was spotless. The only fault I could find with the room was the lack of lighting (it was quite dark).

The Wishing Well pub was a god-send for us. Our 5 year old soon raced into the Kids Inn play area which is open until 9 o'clock on Saturdays. We could have a drink and watch him at the same time by sitting at a table adjacent to the play area. The food was excellent and was good value for money. Drinks also were good value for money.

We also had breakfast in here (addiitonal £4.95 for continental, £6.95 for full-english). This was good also.

Overall a superb value for money hotel which isn't that far away from York.

  • Liked — the Kids Inn
  • Disliked — the lack of lighting in the room

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2008

Stayed at the New Country Inns in Selby while at a wedding of a friend in March 2008. The hotel was very nice, clean and tidy.

The room was a good size and everything worked as expected. The room had twin beds, full bathroom, storage space, desk with chair and a good size LCD TV with all freeview digital channels.

We ate at the restaurant in the hotel for an evening meal and for breakfast. The food was average, but reasonably priced. The hotel also had a large indoor children's play area which are little girl loved.

The staff at the hotel were all very friendly and answered any questions we had as well as giving us directions.

For the price it was excellent and I would certainly recommend this hotel highly.
