“The Real Spain”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013 for a stay in June 2013

Casa Monte Clara is in a stunning location and, as it's a little way out of Riogordo, is very peaceful. A great place to relax and unwind. Trips to The Alhambra in Granada and the old town in Malaga (Cathedral and Picasso Museum) were very enjoyable.

Hi Robert and Jenny

Thank you for taking time to review Casa Monte Clara. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay, and that you managed to take in the flavor of The Real Spain, which is what we feel is on offer in this part of Andalucia. You can always get to the beach in no time, but here in Riogordo you benefit from real Spanish Tapas restaurants, local produce all at very reasonable costs. We hope to see you again one day. Julian and Lisa

“I wish I could be more complimentary”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013 for a stay in February 2013

I will preface this by saying that I very rarely say anything bad about a private accommodation unless it is really warranted because I understand the effect on business this can have for owners. Having said this, I find it very hard to hold my tongue here. I put a lot of time in to researching our stay here after finding there to be a lot of suspicious phishing happening on 'holiday lettings.co.uk' and 'homeaway.co.uk' - i.e. intercepting of rental enquiries to obtain credit card details etc. (do a google search and you will see what I mean.) so be careful.
Anyway, I contacted the owners of Casa Monte Clara and after speaking via their landline, I was confident they were legitimate so I booked. Payment in full is required in advance as is a 100 GBP security deposit which I was a bit reluctant about but proceeded to pay via paypal - I still don't see why a security deposit can't be payed in cash on arrival and returned afterward. I later had to make several calls/emails to follow up the return of this in what must have been over a week after we vacated because the owner was then apparently on holiday herself. This was my gripe with our stay here - it felt very much like we were a hindrance visiting out of season. I won’t say our stay was ruined but it was certainly a challenge – I actually proposed during our time here at Lake Vinuela – so I suppose I just wanted everything to be perfect….
I rang on the first night about the gas heater which we couldn't get to work at first - it has a replaceable gas bottle and unless you want to get a woodfire going and supply your own wood beyond a couple of logs, it is the only source of heat for the house. I understand visiting in January a certain expectation of the cold weather should be assumed but to heat several rooms, there really should be something more or at least some warning of what to expect - we were freezing at night and early morning. What was really disappointing were the little things - I understand also the expectation for guests with regard to the household essentials - you replace what is needed and the next guests benefit as you leave the item behind. But when there are no guests in the winter months, it would be reasonable to expect that these things are replenished or at least most of them - ok if 1 or 2 things were missed but when there is no dish liquid, no spare toilet paper (only had half a roll), no handwash (a few mills watered down instead of replaced), no insect repellent for ants etc, no washing powder when a washing machine is advertised (in fact washing machine does not work at all as the on button is completely removed) these things all cost the guests money for things they don't take with them. The house is otherwise decorated nicely enough - has a very rustic feel and ofcourse the views of the surrounding countryside are exceptional.
Another point I raised with the owner but didn’t get a response about was that there is a little dog with no collar that was hanging out the front of the house our entire stay. He is underfed and we had no idea who he belongs to or who to report it to. As it became clear he wasn't going anywhere after a couple of days, we fed him here or there and we hope that someone takes responsibility for him soon. Anyway, Andalucía is awash with great places to visit and Riogordo is an ideal base to visit Ronda, Antequera, Malaga, Lake Vinuela, and more.

Thank you for your comments. We are sorry that your stay was not as expected at Casa Monte Clara. We have very good feedback , so like to address any issues that arise.
I contacted Holiday Lettings about phishing, as we were concerned and they advise me to point out, that this is a worldwide web issue, not just limited to holiday rental sites. We did not and do not take payment by credit card , therefore you were never at risk from this issue.
In relation to your payment being paid in full, we clearly state on the website page, in our terms and conditions, that we require a 30% deposit , and the balance is due 8 weeks before arrival. The refundable security deposit is required a week before arrival and is refunded to you a week after departure. This was confirmed in our confirmation, which you said you were happy to accept, but you decided to pay the balance in full as balance due date was imminent.
Our payment terms and security deposit payment terms are standard procedure, this can be confirmed by holiday lettings.
As we did with yourselves, we offer great deals for traveling out of season . January can be lovely, but can also account for the colder weather you experienced. The heating provided, is as advertised on the website, , but we feel that the mobile gas fire and the log burner are more than adequate for heating this Casa in the winter months.
We leave a starter of logs, which you can then purchase more in the local petrol stations and hypermarkets. When you called regarding lighting the gas fire, we talked you through this on the phone and we did offer to come up to the house to help you, but you then called to say you had managed to light it. If you had of made us aware that you were cold, we would of happily addressed this issue.
We always provide all guests with a starter toilet roll, some washing liquid and a hand wash in the bathroom. This is a self catering villa, therefore guests shop to buy all they need during their stay. Shopping for supplies for arrival, is offered to all guests.
We have had guests staying at Casa Monte Clara since and the washing machine is in full working order.
There are stray dogs in Spain, and as our response did state , we advise guests to never feed any dogs or cats, as they then will not leave. This is also stated in the information booklet manual in the house. Unfortunately, we do not have any control over this matter.
We feel it is a great shame that you did not contact us , during the course of your stay to make your problems known, as we could have had the opportunity to have resolved what we could have. We did leave for our annual holiday, but not until the day that you left.
Lisa and Julian

“Tranquil with Stunning Views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012 for a stay in September 2012

The villa is very well presented with a very good kitchen. The views are absolutely stunning with Riogordo below you and Comares perched in the hills behind. It looks amazing at dawn and sunset. Outside are 3 areas to relax - in and out of shade at different times of the day so you can always choose to sunbathe or relax in the shade. The pool is great for cooling down or just lazing around in enjoying the views. Owners are very helpful and it is a fantastic place to be.

“Spectacular view and total tranquility”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012 for a stay in July 2012

Casa Monte Clara is a fantastic holiday location with its spectacular panoramic view of mountains, the local cozy town Riogordo in the valley, Olive groves and the occational goat shepherd. If you are looking for that "Andalusian feel" this is great place to try it out!

“Fantastic views. Great value for money.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2012 for a stay in June 2012

Very enjoyable and peaceful stay at the Casa Monte Clara. Set in the hills, it is worth coming here just for the views and for the surrounding walks. The photos really do not do the ever changing views justice.
The villa was clean and well equipped - thanks to hosts Lisa & Julian - with nice little extras such as English TV, CD player, plenty of books and both pool and bathroom towels provided.
Riogorda is a charming little village with extremely friendly locals and a few nice bars and restaurants and is just a few minutes drive away. Although we did prefer to stay at the villa and have sunset BBQ's and enjoy the views from the terrace rather then venture into the village everynight.
Would love to return.
