“A fine country hotel full of charm and charactor”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

I have just completed a three night event with 73 members at this lovely country hotel. The hotel has a warm friendly feel as soon as you arrive. The staff are all very friendly and helpful and when the sun is shining the central courtyard is a perfect suntrap. The rooms are all clean and tidy with individual furnishing. The breakfast and evening meals were just excellant

3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2013

I booked this hotel two days before travelling as our original choice hotel had to cancel our booking due to a burst pipe in the ceiling of our chosen room. I managed to get a fairly good deal on the usual price, as I wouldn't have booked it otherwise. I stayed with my fiance and we took our two small dogs with us.

The hotel is well laid out with a very pretty courtyard that is perfect for a relaxing drink in the sun. The rooms are clean and the bathrooms are very modern, although our block of the hotel was without hot water on the first morning of our stay. This was fixed by the afternoon though.

I suffer from a very temperamental back problem, so am always a little worried what a strange bed is going to do to my back. I was relieved that the bed was on the firm side which is perfect for people with dodgy backs.

The hotel has added some nice little touches, like being able to take borrow a pair of the hotels "Wellies" in the event of rain - which there was plenty of during our stay and the hotel has created a dog walk in the grounds, for guests to walk their dogs. They also have a very welcome dog poo bin. We have stayed at many other hotels that welcome dogs and they always seem to forget about providing somewhere to dispose of the poo. They also provided a couple of dog bowls and a dog bed each for my mutts.

The hotel reserve tables for guests with dogs in the bar area of the hotel for breakfast and dinner as they are not allowed in the restaurant, which is great as its more relaxed.

We ate dinner on the first evening of our stay and although the food is good it is very expensive for what it is. The restaurant was not that busy but the staff seemed to be really struggling and were quiet slow with the orders and drinks. This was not a problem for us but a few of the other guests were getting quite stroppy. The breakfast was good although the portions could be a little larger.

All in all the hotel staff are very friendly and we didn't encounter any problems, I wouldn't stay here again - only because I know I could get a better deal at other hotels in the area which also accept dogs. I was a little annoyed that they charged me an extra £10 per dog, per night on departure. I have stayed at better hotels and have been charged £10 per dog per stay.

Many thanks for writing this review.

My apologies for the lack of hot water on the first morning (this was the same instance as the previous review, not a seperate incident!).

I am pleased that the bed was suitable for your back and you had a comfortable stay.

Your comments regarding the dog charges have been taken on board and I am pleased that you welcomed the extra touches we include for dogs.

Do always contact us if you are looking to stay locally as we often have good last minute deals depending on availability.

Kind regards

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2013

Just returned from a three night stay at the Barnsdale Lodge, booked via LateRooms.com.
We had a double room (not superior) in the annexe overlooking the courtyard on the first floor (No. 41) which was quite private and not overlooked. The hotel accepts dogs and I had requested a non-pet room which I assume No 41 was as there was no evidence of pet smell.

The room is looking a bit tired and in need of a lick of paint but was spacious and clean. The bathroom had a shower over the bath which was nice and powerful. The white towels were large and thick, lovely! The bed was made up with a counterpane and blanket which I asked to be changed for a duvet (there is also a pillow firmness option - the welcome folder mentions this).
Tea, coffee, hot chocolate and horlicks were provided on the tea tray, along with biscuits.
Unfortunately on the first morning of our stay there was no hot water! The whole side of our annexe was affected and as we needed to go out quite early that morning we were able to use the shower in one of the empty rooms on the other 'wing' rather than wait for the immersion heater to heat the water up on our side.

As for the restaurant - Breakfast includes what you would expect - cereals (the homemade granola is very nice - I have the recipe to make some at home), fruit, yogurt, croissants, juice, choice of hot breakfasts. We ate there in the evening twice - the food and service far surpasses a 3* hotel, the prices being a little more expensive also, but for the quality of food served and the attention from the waiting staff it was well worth it. The bar was well stocked and served a nice pint of beer, I had to sample a couple of the cocktails which were thoroughly enjoyed! hic :-)

Many thanks for taking the time to write this review.

We do accept dogs but only in ground floor rooms. Your room, 41, was one of the pet-free rooms.

My apologies for the lack of hot water on your first morning, this was swiftly recified and should not recur.

I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again soon,

Kind regards

We stayed for two nights in May 2013 on a bed and breakfast rate in a superior room and ate in the restaurant on one night. Everything about our stay , the setting , surroundings , accommodation, food and customer service was excellent. The dinner in the restaurant was five star, beautiful food in a lovely dining room. We will definitely be staying again !

Felt at home as soon as we arrived (always a good sign) great staff from the first phone call , thro to check in and on to dining, must be said Richard is an absolute professional when it comes to the dining service, wine recommendation and generally looking after you while in the restaurant/bar, he will go far! Lovely relaxing courtyard area, orangery , artwork in old dining room and grounds.Food quality was really excellent (although us vegetarians really needed a second different option for our second night stay)At breakfast you must try the hotels home made granola! we would definitely recommend this to our friends and would def stay again...
Finally I must add the hotel had a great choice of beers, some local and fine wines and even had a very friendly night porter on duty ! Overall a classy experience...well done the management team and staff, thanks for making our stay in Rutland complete...

Room Tip: we had room 29 , ground floor which gives good views over to Rutland Water...guess upstairs even bet...

Stayed for one night (26 May 2013) here for a wedding party. Excellent receptionist very helpful. Pets allowed for small fee. Dog bed, bowls and snacks! TJ enjoyed his stay.
Rooms well appointed. Grounds outstanding. Lovely courtyard.
Full English breakfast was disappointing and a bit greasy. Waiter tried to discourage guests from sitting in orangery but with the first sunny morning for months everyone wanted some of it.

Many thanks for taking the time to write this review, I am delighted that you (and TJ!) enjoyed your stay.

I have passed on your comments regarding breakfast to our Chef regarding the breakfast. We use a selection of rooms for breakfast service depending on the number of guests in-house, our conservatory is always very popular all year round so I can assure you there would (and certainly should) have been no deliberate discouragement intended.

We look forward to seeing you again soon,

Kind regards
