“A Spa day should be relaxing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

My friend and I had a voucher for Spa day with champange lunch. On arrival we informed the leisure centre desk that we had arrived and were given a token to get into the pool area. We were asked what time we wanted lunch and decided on 1 pm, intending to have a bit of a swim and then a coffee about 11 before using the pool again and a leisurely read of the magazines we had brought with us before lunch and back to the pool area to sit after lunch. The pool area only has 6 lounge chairs to use by the pool and if you don't get one of those you have to sit on a bench. Not what we had planned for a relaxing spa day. The pool area is very nice and it has 2 whirl pools but children of all ages were allowed in these. Most places don't allow children to use them. It was great for families and there were lots of them in the pool, splashing about with no designated adult only area for swimming. If you want a drink you have to get dressed go out of the pool area and into the bar, which is very nice and serves hot and cold drinks but did get busy and service was pleasant but slow as only 1 person serving all the time qwe were there even over the busy lunch time. If you want to go back to the pool area you have to go back upstairs to the reception and ask for another token. Why not give people 2 tokens and explain the system on arrival? Disappointing.

Having booked lunch for 1 pm we were surprised when the pool guard came and asked if we could do lunch at 12.30 instead as they couldn't do it for 1 pm. Agreed that wasn't a problem. What did surprise us was when we arrived at the restaurant at lunch time there was no booking for us at 12.30 or 1. As we were first in we were encouraged to use a nice table by the window with glimpses of Rutland Water between the lodges. Food was nice, gastro pub type menu with about 4 choices per course and the service pleasant but as a Spa Day destination I can't recommend it. If I just wanted somewhere nice to go I would go back with my husband but it is not the place for a relaxing girly day for us.

We arrived on Christmas Eve, unpacked and went for the Afternoon Tea, I have never had sandwiches so delicious and the carrot cake was a delight. The staff were so helpful as our party had two ladies that were unsteady on their feet and everything was done to help them. It was especially pleasing to see a real ale for sale, quite unusual for a hotel, my only disappointment that it was not from the local brewery Grainstore (which they often have on). The food was superb, always hot and served with a smile, despite the party poppers continually going off !! One minor moan is that we attempted to play snooker (badly) one evening, the room was freezing, no heating !
Boxing Day, the evening barbeque event was really fun, food excellent - do not miss the lamb !
Considering everything a superb Christmas, I have no idea where juro 10 went to, but it was not here. We have already booked for Christmas 2013 and really looking forward to it.
Nothing planned for Christmas - book here. you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Any room overlooking Rutland Water is good

We are staying at Cabin #7. Spacious rooms with lake view. We were impress with every minutes of it. Havent utilize all facilities because it was snowing all days/nights but enjoying the view from the cabin is more enough.

My family decided to celebrate Christmas here last year and booked up Christmas lunch as a special treat. We were expecting a memorable meal in a stunning location but sadly the meal will be remembered for all the wrong reasons and it won't be something we will be doing again.
The meal counts among one of the worst I have had and I concur with other comments on here about the poor quality pub grub type food (albeit I have had far better pub meals!) that others say they too have had. Not what you want for what's supposed to be the meal of the year....
Our smoked salmon starters were dry and disappointing, and cried out for some sort of dressing to liven them up, and the people in our party who had the soup commented on its strange grainy texture. Everyone in our party opted for turkey which arrived as plates of thick wedges of dry meat accompanied by salty stuffing, rubbery potatoes and huge volumes of undercooked vegetables including sprouts which were so hard I couldn't even spear with my fork!!!
It all had that air of cheap, mass produced grub and not what we expected for the quite considerable sum of money which was paid out.
On the more positive side, the staff were mostly friendly and tried their best, but they were clearly understaffed and rushed off their feet.
Sadly, their Christmas cheer couldn't put a sparkle on this restaurant's dismal idea of Christmas.

I needed to stay at the hotel for a wedding, the staff were very helpful especially when I called to make the booking.I was allowed an early check in to fit in with the wedding. The room was just what I needed, basic but clean, warm, comfortable and modern. However quite expensive for what it was. Also a little irritating that the hotel was very far from the actual wedding(which is held in another part of the grounds) especially as it was raining, although they provided a free shuttle service this wasnt made clear to me to start with and it was not very reliable as on one occasion I had to wait for quite a while for it to come and pick me up. And on the next occasion, at the end of the night myself and quite a few other guests including the bride and groom had to walk back to our rooms as we waited at least half an hour without them turning up.
The breakfast was very nice and had a wide range with something for everyone.
I also used some of the facilities the next day, including the swimming pool, sauna and steam room which were all very good.

Room Tip: If staying for a wedding or business check where the actual event is happening so that you can be as...

Great location, great deal (tho' we had to threaten to book by Internet to get it), wonderful room and good facilities ... so why not a smile to round it off? Instead it was - literally - "I'm sorry it's 6.01pm and sandwiches stop at 6.00pm. You'll have to order something else". Do the ducks come in at 6 sharp and eat all the bread?!

This hotel and resort goes all out to make Christmas a special time for you. The staff were friendly and accommodating. They even supplied blankets instead of a quilt for us, on our request. Christmas Eve meal was superb, as was the afternoon tea, then cocktail reception with canapes. Christmas Day dinner delightful, breakfasts all you could want in quantity & variety. The last day, Boxing Day, was a BBQ, which started a little late, but was a good atmosphere. All the facilities were good and we made full use of them, including pool, hot tubs, sauna and steam room. There was also a gym and tennis courts - used to full on Boxing Day. Ample parking, beautifuly scenery & setting overlooking Rutland Water. If there was a small criticism, it was that our room, 433, has a pathway along the windows, which meant that we could be seen from outside, and there was no net curtain for the bedroom or frosted bathroom glass. We didn't really like having to draw the curtains/blind in the bathroom, during the daylight hours. However, by the time we returned home, the staff had already emailed us from the guest questionnaire we left, and have taken our comments about this, onboard.

Room Tip: Pay extra for a superior room, with lake room and balcony, in the Uppingham Hotel
