Make sure you pack your own face cloths and shampoo, conditioners and lotions because you won't find any of these niceties at this hotel.

This is an aging hotel that looks nice from the outside but is in dire need of some maintenance. Locks on public bathrooms are broken or non-existent, electric hand driers are non functioning and the toilets may or may not work.

Don't expect to do any late night swims as all the pools close at 8:30pm even the ones in the "adult' blocks.
The beach would be great if some effort was made to clean it more and if the horses were banned from the area, watch out for the horse apples... really who needs to ride a horse on the beach anyway!
Bring plenty of cash to the beach as there's a contstant parade of vendors which can be very annoying when you have to say NO Thanks 20 times in 2 hours!

The buffet food is typical resort food, catering to a wide variety of palettes. The al a carte menus are much better and one occasion quite good.

The travel brochures may advertise this resort as a 4 star, but really its closer to 3. If all you are expecting is a clean room and comfortable bed to go with the warm temperatures and sun shine then this resort will be just fine, but if your expectations are higher then look for a different resort.

Room Tip: Rooms farthest from the beach the quietest.

This resort went beyond our expectations. After reading all the reviews we were prepared for the basic rooms. Yes, the rooms were simple and the beds were harder than we are used to. Our view was wonderful with a peek-a-boo ocean view that overlooked a gorgeous pool and palm trees. Therefore we did request a foam mattress topper and that made our sleep more comfortable. The grounds of this resort are gorgeous and immaculately maintained. I have been to many resorts and have travelled the world and I was impressed with the excellent upkeep and cleanliness of the Royal Decameron. The bright colours of the resort made us truly feel as though we were in Mexico. The Iguana tree is very cool! The beaches were beautiful and clean. You can walk to Bucerias along the beach which is a bonus. Oh, and the $20 massages (for an hour) on the beach were fantastic. We loved the location near Bucerias. It was quiet and about 1/2 hour by bus to Puerto Vallarta. This was a good location for us as we could travel into P.V. easily by city bus or taxi if we wanted and still enjoy the quiet and safe location of the Royal Decameron.

The food is excellent here and I do not know how anyone could possibly complain about the vast selection of fresh fruits, vegetable dishes, assorted foods available in the numerous buffets. We were constantly impressed and delighted with the excellent variety of food choices as well as the quality. Breakfasts were wonderful with the freshest fruit: papaya, watermelon, pineapple, cantaloupe to name a few. Eggs were cooked to order, and pastries, and juices, ham, bacon, and various breakfast selections. Each buffet has a variety of fresh fruit juices to chose from. Lunches and dinners are wonderful. We were never disappointed. In fact, we were so pleased with the food because we had read some negative reviews prior to our arrival and realized that people who complain about the food here probably are the type of traveller who is difficult to please. We ate at the Brazilian, Japanese and Italian restaurants and enjoyed them all - the Italian was our favourite.

The entertainment is excellent. And the service was excellent throughout our stay. We always tipped. $ 2 dollars/day to our housekeeper. And $1.00 each meal.

The resort clientele was mixed, mainly Mexican and Canadian customers. We loved this as who wants to be surrounded by North Americans. After all, aren't we in Mexico?

We stayed in the block that has the Adult only pool. This was the right choice for us as we wanted to be in a quiet section. If you love being right in the midst of all the action then blocks one, three and four lend themselves to a livelier atmosphere.

We also booked two tours through J.D. tours. We loved both of these tours. Rhythms of the Night and a sailing trip aboard the "Ada." We especially loved our day of sailing and the staff and crew on the Ada were outstanding. We saw dolphins that we could almost touch which was an incredible experience.

We truly loved everything about this resort. As people have mentioned in earlier reviews this is not a Four Seasons. Thus, if you want five-star then pay for a five-star. If you want beauty, excellent service and good food and the friendliest people ever, and if you don't mind a no- frills room then you will not be disappointed. We are planning on returning every year. This was one of the best vacations I have ever had.

My father is elderly and in poor health and I wanted him to send him mail as it would make him happy. I mailed him a card or letter every day of the week I was there, using the mailbox in the main gift store of the Royal Decameron. I was told mail pickup was Monday - Wednesday - Friday, but I dropped off a card everyday, sometimes twice. International postage was not cheap. Not one single card made it to Canada. My stay was April 6 - 13th. What do they do - soak the stamps off and throw out the mail? It is now May 26th. That was the only thing that really upset me about staying there and I didn't realize they don't mail your mail until 6 weeks later - when I gave up on asking my Dad if he ever got any. He lives in Halifax and I live in Edmonton.

Took my mom to Mexico (her first trip like this ever) on a spur of the moment as there was a good last minute deal online and the reviews were pretty good. We paid about $720 all inclusive taxes in from Calgary and it was great value for the money. The resort was very clean (even with disrespectful litterbug tourists) and colorful (which is kinda fun). We were in block 5 which seemed to be where most of the Canadians were staying - a great block to be in - its right beside the adult/quiet pool which was enforced (yay!) and we didn't have to put up with a bunch of yelling and screaming (except the occasional young drunk over-18 partiers which was kind of annoying sometimes). The rooms are basic but all you need - they have air conditioning - but no fridge, alarm clocks (for getting up for excursions so bring your own if you need to wake up early) or wash cloths or shampoo etc. But if you want all the extra frills then pay more and go to a fancier place.

The beach was great - you can walk down it for miles in each direction - there was always a chair to find - although the chairs at the beach and the pool are very hard and uncomfortable. Bring your blow up floaty to lay on - or they will sell you some at the resort and are worth it to lay on - they'll even blow them up for you at the gift shop. We were lucky and some others passed theirs onto us when they left, which we passed on again when we left.

The food was good - not excellent and not terrible - and I always found something to eat and usually managed to over eat every day so . . . I can't complain about not getting enough to eat! We ate at 3 of the a la carte's: Rodizio - which is tons of meat served on skewers and was delicious; JapJap - which was my fav because it was lots of vegetables and lighter dishes so I didn't feel as stuffed; and the Italian restaurant which was also very good. The house wine wasn't very good - quite tangy/vinegary - and I didn't buy any bottled to try, the blended fun slushy drinks were way too sweet for me - tried a few others but just didn't really find anything i liked. The only time I felt a buzz was when i drank beer or tequila so wonder if the drinks are weak? BRING YOUR OWN THERMAL CUP/MUG as all drinks are in small plastic cups (which lazy people leave on the beach and in the pools and expect staff to clean up after them).

Its fun to walk into Bucerias to explore and see some shops and try some restaurants or go for a beer. A taxi into Puerto Vallarta was totally worth it to go explore for the day - about $23-$25 each way. I don't recommend the City Tour into Puerto Vallarta as it was too structured and not worth the $60 each - go on your own instead. The San Sebastian tour was all right - not my favorite but not the worst tour either. The Outdoor Adventure tour - ziplining and rapelling - was fun but way to rushed - wish it was slower a bit so you can look around and enjoy the ziplining instead of being rushed through it at top speed so they can get another tour in right behind you. The local shows they put on at the resort were fun - better than other shows I've seen at other resorts in past years. The dancers are energetic and talented. The crowds attending the shows seemed to be Mexicans and Canadians for the most part.

Would I go back? maybe if the price was right again and I wanted a place just to hang out and relax for a week - i'd maybe go into Puerta Vallarta one day by bus or taxi (no tours) and maybe walk into Bucerias to look around - other than that it would be fun to just relax and lay around for the week. I don't think I'd like it if I had to pay more than $800-$850 to go for a week. If I wanted something a bit more polished I'd go somewhere else.

In all honesty I may think we had high hopes for this resort coming from the past reviews that we read before booking the trip. The price seemed fair for all-inclusive and from reviews we read that the staff would be helpful. Hoping we hit it after the spring break time frame we were hoping it wouldn't be too bad.

Unfortunately we were a little taken back about how opposite it was.

Our room was located in bloque 6 and when you walked out our door you saw a big dirt field filled with trash. The room is small, gloomy, and even the balcony view was of mostly trees and a sliver of a loudly occupied pool. The bathroom wasn't very clean, call me picky, and you could easily see into the bathroom window from the outside walkway. There was no fridge to store drinks and they told us no room service either.

The pools and beach were packed and scattered with trash. Not to mention kids running around like crazy(we have kids so it's not like we aren't used to "loud" but it was a little out of control). The beach was a large slope that had little space on the more even portion.

The food was honestly not amazing in the least. The best place was probably Jap Jap and even then it was disappointing. People said the breakfast bar was their favorite and even there we were very unhappy with the condition of some of the food.

The staff seemed to care little about your concerns most the time and worked you to get as much money from you as needed. We had needed to call our booking agent and they told us to use the card phones outside, we did but weren't told it was a 10-15min limit and cost 97$ per call. We ended up not accomplishing what we needed and had to go talk to Guest Services requesting to use the house phone, $200 too late. When asking for small things we were often told no or a communication barrier occurred and there was little effort in trying to fix that.

We decided the day we got in to do one of those "Presentations" to get some half off tickets to the Canopy Tour, the resort we toured was 100x's better. 2 days into the trip we cancelled the rest of the week with Royal Decameron and moved over to the other resort that had all rooms with an ocean view, kitchens and fridge, granit marble floors and bath, all-inclusive (including room service), an amazing pool with a large beautiful beach, the food was soo much better not to mention the staff really took care of their guests, all for just a few extra bucks.

We normally aren't picky but when you spend a lot of money for your vacation you want something comfortable. When you see 2 resorts comparing to each other one seeming amazing while the other mediocre and only for a tiny price change..it was worth the move.

If you're looking for a party don't care type of place Royal is it! But if you're looking for a relaxing, taken care of, great time I suggest researching more.

We were disappointed in the lack of amenities. The room was without minibar, facecloths, shampoo or tissues. It did have a safe but you have to pay 18 pesos/week to use it. The only other concern was the pool/beach chaise loungers. They were unpadded plastic and very uncomfortable.
Otherwise the food was good if not greatly diverse and the staff was friendly and helpful (especially Saul at the activities desk)
The beach itself was about the best we have ever been to (many) and the water was the warmest we have encountered.
Because of the above I would rate the resort 3 or even 3 1/2 stars, but because of the beach chaise discomfort we would never return
