“A Great and Interesting Museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2014

An excellent Railway Museum showing the famous fully restored ‘Fell’ loco and brake-van used on the 3 rail Rimutaka Incline, New Zealand’s steepest railway line in use from 1878 to 1955. The Museum is excellent with model displays of the two railway towns at each end of the incline, where the trains were assembled or deconstructed There is also a short video showing the operation of the incline. The staff are very interesting to talk to as they imparted information about the bygone area.

“Wonderful and unique well worth a visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2014

If you are in the region this is a must see particularly if you have come over the mountains from Wellington. This unique little museum has some wonderful memorabilia including some fantastic archive film of the times these unique trains used to haul coaches and passengers over the mountains. Fascinating system of geared drive system and heavy brake trucks. If you into anything mechanical this is heaven!!
A bit if a gem - go and see it for yourself.

“Brilliant, wacky”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2013

The centrepiece of this small museum is the last of the strange hybrid steam engines that used to climb the nearby pass over to Wellington. Born in the Victorian age these little engines were still running a hundred years later. The unique mechanism for gripping the third rail is simply explained as is the matching device to slow the thing down on the descent. One of a kind and well worth the hour to look around.

“Great little Museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

A great place to stop after the trip over the hill. This little museum is packed with interesting objects and stories as well as the fell engine. Just beside the main road. Such a pity not to stop. Well worth it. A real little gem.
