It was my 30th wedding anniversary. I didn't realise until 3pm of the day. Panic.... I thought let's go over the hill and stay in Waiarapa region. ( we come from Wellington ). I looked up trip advisor and found Gateway Motor Inn. I rang the hotel directly and talked to the manager Fasail. That's when the experienced started. I explained my wee issue and asked if he could assist. He could not of been more helpful. Not a problem and infact they have a special going for two day stay, however they are fully booked on this special, but he would look to honour this special for us. Obviously he did not need to do this, so that was very pleasing. Next came the room. A very well decorated well appointed room. On booking into our room , Fasail knocked on the door and presented us a bottle of wine to celebrate our anniversary. We have a small courtyard outside our room so we sat done and enjoyed our gift. From there we went to dinner. We both ordered pate for starter, when it arrived I was again surprised a well presented dish. You wouldn't get any better from the best restaurants in Wellington. Infact they were of such a size that we could have shared one between us. Next was mains. I ordered steak with mushroom sauce, my wife ordered Nelson Salmon, the menu said both came with home made chunky chips and salad. We enquirer could we have fresh vegetables instead. Not a problem. The meals arrived and were again a great size, perfectly cooked and vegetables were crunchy and very enjoyable. This was all accompanied with a nice local Savignon for my wife and and a Pinot Noir for myself. The whole time the hospitality of Faisal was outstanding. Nothing was a problem.
Next day we were greeted by a complimentary breakfast, we spent the day visiting the region. We we arrived back to our room we had a knock on the door from Faisal just wanting to make sure our room had been cleaned to our satisfaction. We can't recommend highly enough this Boutigue Hotel. All rooms are named after great NZ racehorses. The lounge area is a very comfortable place to have a quiet wine or beer. I can just imagine how impressive it would be in winter as it has a larger open fire and would just make the homely feel of this place complete.
If you ever coming to Masterton look no further. Thank you Faisal, you made up for my mistake and got me sound brownie points. We will be back.
