“A magnificent residence”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2012

Llandaff is a magnificent house with a fascinating history. It has a drive one kilometre long and the rooms and grounds (including the transport) are truly majestic. Elizabeth and Robin are wonderful hosts and Elizabeth had prepared an excellent meal, with corn (from the garden) chowder followed by New Zealand leg of lamb. Despite our arrival an hour after planned, due to Wellington traffic and missing the turning (rescued by google maps), the meal was beautifully prepared and beautifully presented soon after we arrived. After dinner Robin and Elizabeth entertained us with stories of the house. Robin had to leave early the next morning (very quietly) but breakfast was as elegantly served as the dinner had been. It was a great pity this was just a one-night stay on our way from Wellington to Hawkes Bay.

We stayed at Llandaff for two nights and everything about the place was geat. It's a grand old house filled with antiques, yet very homely and welcoming, thanks largely to the service and care provided by the hosts, Elizabeth and Robin. They couldn't do enough for us, and even looked after our visitors exceptionally well. The large rooms are gorgeous, clean and authentically furnished, as are the bathrooms. Breakfast in the downstairs dining room is ample, with a range of good food. We got to listen to some old gramaphones, so the antiques were not just for looking at. When we discovered some old friends were also staying at Llandaff at the same time, Elizabeth made sure we got to have breakfast together. It's very quiet at the end of the long drive, ensuring a good night's sleep.

As 2 cyclists touring NZ, we were thrilled to arrive at this destination we had booked via the internet. Llandaff is a beautiful, gracious residence with a wonderful array of antiques, lovely gardens and exquisitely fitted suites. Robyn and Elizabeth are simply charming hosts, and we enjoyed their company and fabulous meals. This location was definitely a highlight of our holiday, and one we would instantly recommend to others.

The things that "make" a holiday are the sweet surprises like our stay at Llandaff with Robin and Elisabeth. Their hospitality was so personal we felt like we were old friends coming to visit. Llandaff House is quite a special place, beautifully decorated, full of special period pieces. The house is lovingly restored, and the furnishings, some of which belonged to the original owners, enhance the character of the house. My husband commented that it was probably the most beautiful place that he had ever stayed in. We were treated to Robin's collection of gramophones, and to Elisabeth's great cooking. Photographs around the house depicting the history of the house give you an idea of the property's past. Close to Masterton, but hidden in the countryside, we rode our bicycles out and about in the area, taking in some of the vineyards, even in the light rain, we had a nice outing. We tasted lovely wines at the Wee Red Barn and Loop Road.
This is the most special place that we stayed during our 7 week visit to NZ, can't say enough to recommend it to visitors to the Masterton area and NZ; an easy drive from Wellington.
Thank you Robin and Elisabeth for creating this wonderful place for us and other visitors.

Room Tip: there is nothing negative about Llandaff!!

Booked the Llandaff over the Internet from England. What great rooms, huge size with all the fittings provided to take you back in time, but with good shower and bathroom facilities. Robin and Elizabeth were wonderful hosts, and rightly very proud of the accomodation they provide. A very enjoyable experience.

Room Tip: The front left room upstairs has its own ensuite bathroom and is ginormous

Unfortunately we were only booked in for 1 night on our way to catch the ferry to South Island. A beautiful house in the 'English Country House' style, set in a lovely garden, it was so peaceful we would have liked to have spent more time here and taken advantage of the bikes to explore the local countryside. We were met wiith a pot of tea from our very welcoming hosts, Elizabeth and Robin. The bedroom was beautiful with everything you could wish for supplied, extremely comfortable bed, and delightful balcony overlooking the garden. Elizabeth cooked us an excellent meal in the evening, and we couldn't have had better company.

We arrived at Llandaff after a fairly gruelling drive from Wellington in the rain and the hosts, Robin and Elizabeth couldn't have been more welcoming. The house is gorgeous and it was lovely to experience a little gracious living. Bedroom was fabulous and the bed really comfortable. The house is a bit of a way out of Masterton but worth the extra effort for what you get. Thoroughly recommend Llandaff.
