“Traditional Country Pub”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2012

Kirkham is the perfect location for a Christmas walk and most visitors today were families combining their walk with a pub lunch. This is a very cosy traditional pub with low beamed ceilings and roaring real fires. Now serves excellent local Wold Top beers and staff are very friendly and helpful. As a restaurant it has been up and down over the years. It now serves perfectly OK pub grub - many variations on pie and chips, fish and chips, steak and chips, sandwiches. So if you remember this as a fine dining kind of place (as it was 2-3 owners ago) you will be disappointed, but for a country local it does a perfectly good job when many are struggling and closing down - so worth supporting. We definitely need a pub here. One odd thing today is that there were almost more tables than chairs in the dining extension. Where have all the chairs gone? Don't they want more people to eat here?

“Disappointing Lunch”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2012

We arranged a family lunch on Sunday 16th December 2012, as a family pre-Christmas get-together, as a treat for our Mum. From the moment of arrival, the visit was disappointing to say the least. We had reserved a table. We were left standing at the bar with drinks without any offer to show us to a table. Drinks service at the bar was slow. We had to ask where our table was, and were then just pointed in the direction of our table, not taken to our seats. We were put in a very small side room, which was cramped and extremely cold. No heating on. Service to the table was extremely slow. The food was mediocre. This lovely old pub, with views to die for is letting itself down. It is trying to be something it is not. The Rabbit pie, was not a pie at all, but a casserole with a slab of pastry plonked on top. The fish and chips were burnt ! We asked for some bread with our starters and a very large white bread-bap was plonked on the table; there was no care and attention taken, and no one came to our table during our meal to see if everything was ok. The Tetley's beer we were given was clearly at the end of the barrel and should not have been served. A good bar person would have known this. They had a lovely log fire, which was spoilt by the fact that the smoke was blowing back into the room and, thus, they opened the doors, resulting in the pub being freezing cold ! It was an extremely disappointing visit to a pub which we have visited over the years, many many times. It used to be a lovely place to eat and drink. In our opinion we would not be revisiting. It is most certainly over priced for what you get - back to basics please and some good old fashioned customer service to-boot!

“Disappointing food but a large, empty car-park.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

Years ago The Stone Trough used to be brilliant and it was usually full. Then it went considerably down-hill. We hadn't been for ~7 years so thought we should give it another try. When you go out for a meal you expect a nice cosy pub, good service and good food at a reasonable price. Well, it was cosy and the service was good but the food was disappointing. I ordered steak pie, when it came it was in a square dish with a cardboard-thin, soggy crust. Actually cardboard has more taste I think. The vegetables were nice and the starter (black pudding and goats cheese) was fine too. Would we go again or recommend The Stone Trough? No, you'll have to do better as there are loads of pubs around which do. Try a different chef.

“Spectacular Location, Interesting Building, Let Down by the Food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

Monday night is often a good time to judge the quality of an eating establishment. We had been recommended to come to the Stone Trough so six adults began our Christmas celebration here. We were seated at a table close to the open fire, which on a cold night was acceptable. We ordered starters and main course from the general menu and an assortment of drinks. The service was good at this time. The starters chosen were good. Not often seen on menus these days, three of us chose rabbit pie for main course. This was a huge disappointment. Obviously made in a cooking pot, the dish arrived swimming in a thin tomato-based gravy. An insipid thin pastry covered the meat. What meat? Tiny pieces of rabbit, some of which were tough and could have been any animal, the taste swamped by the tomato gravy, were lurking beneath. I politely asked whether there was any more meat available. The waiter said he would report to the chef, with no apology. He did not return. Not wishing to spoil our evening I did not pursue the matter but we terminated our meal with coffees whereas we would have ordered sweets normally. The other main courses chosen received two average and one good mark. We enjoyed our visit but not the rabbit pie and the value for money was poor.

“Fish and chip night”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

Been a few times and ,for the price, it is very good. The pub has a ton of atmosphere, lovely ales, very friendly staff and a stunning location. The fish seems to vary a bit in quality as does the type of batter. Can only put it down to different a different chef .But for under £7.00 per head you cannot complain.
