“Immense Location, Big Spacious Apartments”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

Stayed at the Hotel Planibel Apartments last week (27/01/13 - 03/02/13) and was thoroughly impressed. First off, what a location, mountain views to be had all around and literally a minute walk to the main gondola and chair lift! We arrived at the hotel early afternoon but check in isn't until around 5pm. So wasn't very happy especially as we had been up since 3am to get our flight! The Planibel resort so big and has so much that you kind of forget that the entire village of La Thuile is outside the resort and waiting to be explored! The apartment we booked had a double room with en-suite, a twin room with a balcony, main bathroom, lounge/diner and a kitchen. All rooms were of a decent size and there was utility area to hang up wet ski gear! Only problem was the kitchen which only had 1 plug and wasn't very well stocked.
The actual skiing was simply faultless, we had good snow at the beginning of the week but the weather did turn as the week went on. Overall on the Wednesday/Thursday we had a total of about 3/4 foot of snow at the top of the mountain. Also there was a very strong wind. The resort has a good mixture of runs to suit all, A nice big wide area of blues, with Reds and Blacks scattered across the mountain.. Run 7 (Red) is 11km long and is pretty spectacular as it takes over the top of the mountain and back round all the way to La Thuile. Food on the mountain and in the ressort was reasonably priced as was the alcohol and soft drinks!
The resort as a whole is very quiet and this is perfect is my opinion. There was good slopes and no queues for the lifts!
The ski school instructors were faultless and were good fun!
Overall I would recommend this to absolutely anyone who is a skier/boarder

After reading numerous negative reviews on here, we weren't expecting much, and were pleasantly surprised to find it was quite nice. The location is fantastic, right at the bottom of the slopes, about a minute's walk from the main gondola. Our apartment was spacious, clean, and had everything we needed e.g. kettle, hobs, microwave, fridge, table, television. The decor was a little old-fashioned, but not unpleasant, and comfortable.

There is a supermarket and a lovely deli right in the complex, so cooking for yourself is no problem. There is also a little snack bar, selling pizza and burgers, which I'm sure would be great for kids, a newsagent, a few shops selling ski gear, and cafes selling hot chocolate, cake's and ice-cream, all right in the Planibel complex.

There are also a number of bars, and restaurants in and around the complex, ranging from cheap and cheerful pubs to more formal dining, so there is something for everyone. It definitely isn't as rowdy as other resorts, which was great for us as we would rather snowboard than waste time drinking or clubbing, but there seemed to be a few bars open late. The prices for food and drink, both self catering and eating out were very reasonable, and all the food was of a high quality and delicious.

There is also a swimming pool, gym and sauna in the complex, which is great after a day of snowboarding. The swimming pool building is a little old fashioned, but the facilities were great, and the place was clean, with plenty of staff on hand. It cost 10 euros, which includes a towel. You do have to wear a swimming cap, but these can be purchased in the shop just up the stairs for around 6 euros.. and they look very fetching. There are also separate male and female saunas.. so you can't hang out with your partner.. but overall the pool was great.

I don't really understand the comments stating the place was confusing and took ages to walk around. Yes there are a lot of rooms, and it can take a minute to find your room/apartment initially, but it doesn't take long to find your way around, and you can walk round every inch of it in less than ten minutes. There are also ramps and elevators all over the place.

The town itself is small, and walking from Planibel right down to the bottom of the old town only takes about 10 minutes. The only slight drawback of the trip, were a rowdy group in our apartment block who came back screaming every night at about 3am, but obviously the hotel can't do much about people being rude. Once they were in their rooms we couldn't hear anything, so the sound only travels if idiots are shouting in the corridors.

We had a great time in Planibel and would definitely go again. We book through Nielson, and the price for the whole trip was very reasonable.

This was a great dissapointment. We booked because our group had stayed there 10 years ago. According to them it has gone down hill since then. We did not get the appartment we booked and they quoted an excessive increase for an upgrade. Only redeeming feature was the excellent service at the front desk.

Good location and though clean needs sprucing up and modernising with easy access wifi, more facilities such as laundry.

Food very disappointing...salad ok, downhill otherwise.

Bad experience in attached restaurant today. Huge wait for meal, over charged and when complained the female member of staff...name begins with m, didn't catch rest...surly and unpleasant. Marked contrast to her male colleagues...all charming.

Bar prices ridiculously high.

Def won't be coming again or recommending it.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else!

Myself and my partner stayed here for New Year. 30th Dec until the 6th Jan.

The hotel is in an excellent location, next too lifts and gondolas.

The rooms were more than adequate. They were kept clean at all times. The only negative was the beds were really uncomfortable.

With the food you always had a choice. They had quite a big selection. Being vegetarian I'm quite picky but found I could usually find something to eat. Be aware though they have a key on the menu which advised certain things were meat free - on closer inspection they were NOT!!

One thing we did find slightly odd was the maid. I do think this needs to be addressed with the hotel. Several mornings we used the do not disturb sign and on all morning we were disturbed. The maid would still knock and wake us up to clean the room which was very annoying. Midway through the holiday we went for breakfast and left the sign on the door to NOT disturb as we were still getting ready and had things out. When we returned the maid cleaned the room. She had taken it upon herself to sort through things which were on the dresser and decide what was rubbish. She threw out a cardboard google case and a small leaflet which was a warranty document!! I don't see how it's for to decide what to keep and what to throw away. I did also ask her as she passes the room if I could have them back as I could clearly see the items in the bin liner and she just kept repeating that she hasn't stolen anything.

Apart from the maid the overall stay was ok. I would stay here again.

This hotel is no doubt very well located. But however, I won’t not recommend it to anyone for the following reasons:

- Staffs are not very helpful, especially on receptionist and desk by bar area. However, couple of waiters in the restaurant were very friendly and helpful
- For a 4 star hotel, there was no tea/coffee making facilities, but if you want this facility, there was an additional charge of 40 euros per night
- There were various additional charges / deposit by the hotel , e.g. tourist tax, service charge at the restaurant for ordering tap water, deposit for ski locker keys, deposit for ski pass, deposit for safety box, charge for towel at the swimming pool
- You cannot use the swimming pool without a swimming cap – apparently for health and safety reasons. But it’s very difficult to buy a swimming cap anywhere. The sauna and Turkish bath are separate for men and women
- The hotel bar plays live music every night, which could be very entertaining. But till midnight every night of the week can be very frustrating. So if you’re looking to have a good night sleep, definitely DON’T go there
- Last but not least, please double check your bills when you check out – the hotel staff tend to overcharge and/or add additional charges to your bills. So please keep all receipts for what you have already paid for

Room Tip: Very noisy hotel, so does not matter which room you choose.

We came to this hotel for 10 days at the end of December 2012.
Generally the hotel is a comfortable place to spend there vacation if you really want to ski.
Positive moments:
1) The location is ideal. 30 meters from ski lifts. Ski in/ski out. Ski scool is 20 meters from the main entrance. Ski slopes for kids also are 50 meters away. It can save you lots of time what is very important especially if you are with kids.
2) The hotel is big and basically has everything you need within its building: ski rent services, winter shops, swimming pool, fitness etc. You can stay there without even visiting center town
3) There is some animation for kids. It is in Italian but staff is very positive and kids really enjoy baby dance and evening show.
4) The ski area of La Thuile-Rosiere is very good. There are opportunities for almost every level of skiiers.
5) Restaurant menu is quite decent. Nothing special but there is a choice. Definitely it is not a gourmet place and but it is not what you are normally looking for by staying in this type of hotels.
Negative things:
1) It is quite an industrial place without any "charme" and romantic atmosphere. So if you are travelling as a couple and looking for something private and romantic - avoid this place, you won't like it.
2) The hotel is full of kids. For us it was ok because we had 5 kids ourselves but I can suppose that for single or couple travellers it will be not so enjoyable.
3) Because the hotel is quite big and "industrial" the level of service was appropriate: lots of people on reception, difficult access to information, exchange of information between staff is at zero level.
4) Swimming pool definetly need refurbishment: facilities are quite old, everything looks like you are in the middle 70s. Sauna and turkish bath are separated for men and women.

We had our friends staying in town at Miramonti hotel and we had a dinner there. The hotel is very cozy, very private and very quite. The food is nice but if I would come again to La Thuile with my family I would prefer Planibel because for me the most important is to have more time for ski and for kids - to have fun in game rooms or with animation team.
