“Great vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2010

This is a great place to vacation if you like the outdoors and quiet, relaxing atmosphere.
We stayed here on an RCI exchange, looking to see the geology and the typical New Zealand culture on the North Island. It was fantastic and we enjoyed the stay.
First, it is about 4-5 hours from Auckland airport, and located on the southwest shore of Lake Taupo, the largest lake in New Zealand. The nearest town is Turangi, which contains a Shell station, a Burger King, and a Red Crown grocery. It also contains an
I-Site office, which has various brochures and literature about the local area and provides tickets to attractions. The I-Site offices are a must for local information.
I had contacted the resort in advance, because we were arriving in Auckland mid-afternoon. They responded by email and said they would stay open late to check us in.
When we got there, the stores were closed as well as the restaurant, but the receptionist gave us coffee, tea, cream and sugar for the morning. Our unit was a 3 bedroom for six, having a master and two bedrooms with two twin beds each. There were two baths and a full kitchen with appliances. The unit was a split level with each level having a living area with views of the lake. There is a large deck off of the lower level. The unit was clean and spacious and more than met our needs.
Attractions in the area include fishing, hiking, and various geological features, including volcanoes, caves, and geothermal areas. Driving to these locations ranges from 40 min. to 2 hours. We visited the Tongariro National Park to the south, the Waitomo caves, northwest of the resort, and Rotorua about two hours north. The resort provides wireless internet access for an hourly rate.
We visited some of the towns in the area, having breakfast at some of the cafes and shopped in the stores in Taupo, on the north side of the lake. During our stay, it rained quite a bit, so some of our plans were adjusted for the weather.
It is late fall during this time of year, with temperatures in the 40-60 degrees for highs and lows in the 30-40s. It snowed while we were there and closed one road for several hours.
Overall, we enjoyed the visit and would stay here again.

Stayed for 3 nights at Oreti apartments with my partner and 2 other friends in a two bedroom apartment and thought the place was fabulous. Oreti is located on the other side of the lake to Taupo town, surrounded by bushland and we found it so much nicer than Taupo itself which is fairly touristy and ugly. The apartments are right on the lake with panoramic views across it and all really private. Was lovely to be able to cook a meal in the kitchen, or there was also the option of eating in the restaurant which had a great menu too. The apartments had all the facilities you'd need and were nice and modern and a comfortable size - the 3 nights for the price of 2 midweek also made it great value.

There were tennis courts, pool, spa - but our favourite thing at the resort was taking the path down to the lake and having a swim in the crystal clear waters - was just lovely.

Otherwise, its nice and close to lots of good walks including the Tongariro crossing, and we went Whitewater rafting and to hot springs just nearby as well. But more than anything, was just a nice place to relax sitting on the verandah looking out over the lake!

Wish we'd stayed longer and can't wait to go back!

Not a great number of recent reviews!

We travelled up from Turangi, about 15 mins by road and as we approached this location, we had the sense that we were going to somewhere special. It didn't disappoint. You turn off the highway down a lane and then right into this 'village' of timber lodges/apartments. First off you come to the reception where the owners/staff greet you, following which you are shown to your lodge.

Am I dreaming, is this view real........

Yes of course, it is. The apartment is wonderfully furnished, very spacious and with views through the patio doors onto the timber verander to die for. Views of Lake Taupo of course.

The lodges of set up on the side of the hills on the banks of this lake. There is a footpath taking you down to the lakeside which takes 20 mins or so, but the area at the bottom of the path is well overgrown and the views do not make the journey worthwhile.

The 'village' includes a laundry, tennis court, swimming pool which is indoor but not heated and a restaurant. The restaurant is not open every night, but if you are lucky enough to eat there, the food is excellant, albeit a little pricey.

Whilst eating our meal in front the full height windows of the restaurant, I missed the sunset but picked up on the beautiful moon lit evening across the lake.

There is not a shop on site, apparently there is a small shop in a nearby village, but we were aware of that and stocked up as we came through Turangi en route.

If you are in the area, this is a place not to be missed.

I recently got married at Oreti. I am from the UK, and booked the venue and accomodation after viewing the website. The staff there booked the florist and sorted everything whilst we were still in the UK, and when we first visited Oreti, we were blown away by the beauty of the place.

The wedding was fantastic, made all the better by the helpfulness and involvement of the staff. The accomodation was clean and fantastically well equiped, with amazing views over Lake Taupo. The restaurant was welcoming, and the food sensational, again with great views out over the lake.

We stayed for 10 days, but could have stayed forever. It was just such a beautiful place to be. We had guests come over from the UK and they all said that it was perfect. My wife's parents are even planning there return trip!

We booked our wedding at Oreti Village without even seeing the resort. Fleur, the assistant manager, was exceptionally helpful with the organisation of our wedding, suggesting a florist, photographer and a celebrant. She booked and organised everything for us.

When we first arrived, we were blown away by the beauty of the place. The pictures on the website just don't do it justice. Every single apartment has a wonderful lake view. The accomodation in clean, comfortable, well equiped and very luxurious. The grounds are well kept and we loved the wild qualis running around. They even made an appearance at the wedding.

The food in the restaurant was sensational, with the chefs providing a balanced and distinctive menu. Every time we ate there it was just perfect. The staff were friendly and more than helpful, providing us with everything we needed to make it a perfect wedding and a perfect stay.

I would reccomend Oreti to anyone. It is just the most perfect place!

My husband and I took 3 months off to go travelling, As we are both forty, the level of accommodation required by us (me) was not going to be your backpacker hostel. So I searched high and low throughout NZ to make sure the accommodation would be just right. We stayed at B&B's for the whole of our trip until we reached Taupo. The weather wasn't great for my husband to do the Alpine Crossing so we decided to stay an extra night in or around Taupo/Turangi. We visited the information centre at Turangi and asked them to suggest somewhere to stay (my Charming B&B guide didn't really have anywhere that was right for us). They suggested Oreti self catering. We booked in and set off to find our accommodation. When they said self catering, I was expecting more of a motel. What I didn't expect to find was the most fantastic place which has in fact been my Number 1 place out of the 16 we stayed in during our travels around NZ.

The loft apartment was beautiful with views to die for. And the self catering part was such a welcome release as I was able to use the facilities and the beautiful view and have a romantic meal in PRIVATE! I love eating out but after a few nights/weeks, it felt so nice to be able to have home cooked food!

I just couldn't fault the place!

Stay there - you could miss out on so much by not doing so.

We had booked this place before discovering Trip Advisor and still not seen any reviews before we left for our holiday. After a drive alongside Lake Taupo we arrived on Christmas Eve to a warm welcome and found that we had been upgraded to a balcony apartment with amazing lake views.

This is a small village complex where the units are superior type lodges in a quiet location on the southern shores of Lake Taupo. Very well equipped, very comfortable, everything we needed for our self catering needs. Perfect place to relax and enjoy the views over the Lake on Christmas Day.

The staff were particularly helpful and the chef managed to cook a special meal at short notice to meet my wife’s special dietary needs.
