A continuing restoration project, the story of the homestead and the people who lived there is so important to our early history.

“The Old Homestead”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

It is truly remarkable what a group of dedicated volunteers have done with what was a total wreck, used for storing hay. They have created a beautiful little slice of history.

Very interesting place with a special atmosphere. Flash-back to the start of all region Athenree! Nice and cosy for family-visiting.

“Colonial New Zealand – a fine example”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

A visit to Athenree Homestead is more than a step back in time. The hard-working trust members have managed to capture much of the spirit of the Irish settlers, Hugh and Adela Stewart and their family who build the homestead – you feel transported back in time to the life of a pioneering New Zealand family.

We have visited the homestead several times and always amaze at the progress that has been made in transforming what had become a derelict hay barn into a fine example of colonial living by a relatively well-off family. Recently we picnicked in the grounds under spreading trees on a perfect Bay of Plenty summer’s day.

Inside the homestead are lots of reminders of early colonial life and each room are tastefully decorated in a manner applicable to the period and often with donated original artefacts. We spent an enjoyable hour on a guided tour through the homestead and all for $5. Many thanks to the volunteers for a great experience.

“Dedicated group of volunteers”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2012

The restoration of Athenree Homestead is a credit to the dedicated group of volunteers who have nursed this beautiful old homestead back to life. The homestead still has a lot of work to be done as a "new" section to the house including kitchen and wet areas is planned once funding can be raised. A lot of historical items can be found within the homestead walls and the story of the Stewart family at Athenree is interesting as Adela Stewart kept a diary for 28 years which has been published into a book available at the homestead.
If you are in the area drop in, the volunteers are very active and host morning/afternoon teas on a regular basis. Our visit was enjoyable on a warm, sunny morning. It's also worth stopping here just to take in the view over Shelly Bay and the Bay of Plenty.
