Our stay was a disaster!! On Holiday from Ireland prior to Christmas 2011 I surprised my wife to a quiet night away. On checking in we were taken to our room on the other side of the lodge, This was a mid week booking and there were 2 other families staying at the lodge and could not understand why we were put out the back of the lodge. The website clearly states that there is a swimming pool and tennis court onsite!! On checking this out we discovered that the swimming pool was empty and full of leaves and there was no Tennis court!!! When asking the Manager/Owner we were informed that the pool was not in use an dthat the Tennis court had been turned into a herb garden. If they state on their website what facilities they have they should ensure that they can offer them or at a minimum inform their guests what changes have been made. The owners response was a simple I'm Sorry! No explanation nothing just I'm Sorry which is totally unprofessional and unacceptable!! My wife and I checked out after 15 mins of finding out that infact what was offered was simply not available. The grounds were a mess and not tidy at all which was a shame as it has the potential to be lovely. To top everything off on returning home to Ireland I had discovered that I was charged!! We were in the lodge for no more than 30 minutes and checked out due to the fact that what was offered was simply not.

We loved our stay in Fantail Lodge! The villa is very nice and clean, with a beautiful view on the garden. You've got a good privacy and everything you need to relax.
The owner is a chef so food is excellent and the service is very nice and warm.
Really, if we come back in Katikati, we'll definitly book a room in this place.

Fantail Lodge

Pros;
New units with nice chattels.
Tastefully decorated
Main building is beautiful with character and charm.

Cons;
The Estate room makes you feel like you are in the back room of the main unit with no view or privacy. There are no net curtains on the windows which face the walkway and carport to both units. Curtains need to be closed to avoid anyone looking straight in.
There are no security stays on the windows, so they cannot be left open when you leave for an outing.
When the bathroom window is open passers by can see directly in.
The bed is two singles pushed together.
There is no table or chairs to sit at when eating or having coffee.
The only place to sit is on the bed.... A little tricky with a plate of food on your lap.
Tea and coffee making supplies are a disappointment, with two selections of tea. And only one tea bag of each.  Two plates are supplied but no bowls.
Bathroom towel supplies are minimal. Two small bath towels, two hand towels, two face cloths, one bath mat, two small soap and one spare roll of toilet paper. Additional bath towels, toilet paper, bath robes and a box of tissues would be an improvement.
There are no towel rails anywhere in the unit.
The shower is over the bath with no curtain to stop the floor getting wet, and the shower head attachment is sloppy causing the head to flick back to the wall with water pressure, making the water spray towards the ceiling. When turning the shower off the head drops forward and falls from its cradle into the bath (or on your head if you are still standing under it).
The hot water cylinder must be small or shared between units. The water runs cold after one shower if the other units are occupied.
When returning from our day out we found the room had been made up consisting of clean towels and the bed made. The kitchen area had not been touched apart from restocking the one tea bag... Cutlery, cups, glasses etc weren't cleaned or replaced. Rubbish had not been taken.
The continental breakfast was well presented but basic. On offer was muesli cornflakes, yogurt, and fruit. Then molenburg toast with one condiment, muffin, and filter coffee and or fruit juice.
The grounds around the property are neglected and in desperate need of a full-time groundsman and gardener.
The property has the potential to be amazing!! So disappointing to see it in this poorly maintained state.

Viewing the website gives you false expectations, along with the high room rates.
We had prepaid for the two nights otherwise we would have left and gone elsewhere.

The villa project is about completed and all set in mature grounds. Here is referred to a very special (trial) promotion during the winter months at under half price. There was a option to upgrade, have cooked breakfast etc etc at a small surcharge. They obviously have not dined inhouse but consumed take aways! The rooms referred to are studio's and attached to the large suites (98 square meters). They have all of today's services available including fibre optic backed broadbant. Some points were fair, some are dealt with as part of villa completion.

If you are a guest of the Fantail Lodge you will get more than just a very clean, luxury and relaxing environment! You'll get the best service possible (The host will assure that) and on top of that you're host is also a 5 star chef who definitely understands his business.

If I'm going to visit NZ again, I will secure my bed in the Fantail Lodge!;)

The location of this venue was astounding, hidden away in the quiet town of Katikati. We were privileged to stay in the new villas completed mid last year. The villas nestled in the trees gave a superb, quiet atmosphere. The villas were very cosy, warm, spacious and private. We went for both dinner and breakfast at the restaurant and the food was outstanding. The quality of the food would have to be rated A+. The room service was completed punctually, and the cleanliness of the villas was spotless. This was a very well-worth and affordable stay.
We will be back!

Just arrived home after an excellent two nights at Fantail Lodge where we were well looked after and fed. We stayed Friday and Saturday night in a villa, one of several new and very pleasant self contained units in the grounds of the lodge. Beds were very comfortable and the units themselves warm and clean. Two minutes walk to the main lodge. We ate dinner and breakfast on both days and highly rate the quality of the food and attention to detail in its presentation. Harry, owner and chef, took the orders in a very pesonable 'nothing is a problem' style. We were encouraged to try different foods or styles of preperation. Harry is obviously keen on game and I woudl love to go back if wild pork or venison was on offer. As it was, the farmed venison and rib eye steaks were the best I've eaten. Location on the south side of kati kati town is convenient for travelling from either Tauranga or Waihi. Fully recommend trying the restaurant even if not staying in the hotel.
