After making our reservations to the Meridian Club (MC) last March (of '06), I would scour the internet weekly looking for feedback. Unfortunately, I came up relatively empty. I found scant pieces of complement and criticism. After having one of the best vacations of my 40 year life, I decided that the positives the MC offers needed to be described in the glowing detail it deserves.
After a 6 minute flight from Provo in a 6 seater, we were warmly greeted at the Pine Cay airport by Bev and Wally, back as managers of the MC. After a 3 year hiatus, the former managers have returned bringing with them a sense of stability the MC has, apparently, lacked. We were immediately treated to a late lunch and a couple of welcome rum punches while Bev asked if we had any special concerns/needs (During the course of our stay, Bev would frequently 'check in' to inquire how we were doing.) Avianne, who works at the front desk, gave us a brief tour of the facility and how meals are handled.
Food: Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style between certain hours of the day. At breakfast, there is a wide assortment of fruit, cereals and pastries. You can also order eggs (any way), omlettes, french toast and pancakes. I even saw a couple of egg sandwiches delivered to a couple of guests. Lunch offers an array of pastas and poultry. On different days pork, veal, fish and chicken were served. Each day there was a plentiful salad bar and dessert trays. Even if you're not a fan of buffets, I can't see how you couldn't find something that could whet your appetite. On a chalkboard on the dining room wall you'd find the nights' dinner menu. Each dinner is comprised of 4 courses: salad, soup, entree and a choice of 3 desserts. At lunch you're asked to select your dinner entree. Each night you can choose between 4 meat and poultry main courses that vary daily. I thought the food was very, very good.
Accomodations: Unfortunately, I can't speak to any of the MC's 12 rooms and Sand Dollar cottage. We were upgraded to stay in one of the half dozen private cottages the MC has access to rent. What I can say is that it looks as if the Club and rooms have been recently redecorated (new paint, etc.) based upon other guests' comments.
Activities: The MC's greatest 'asset' is its beach. It's sterling reputation has been, justifyably, well documented. For those who haven't heard, I liken it to the beaches displayed in the Corona Beer TV ads. Imagine an unspoiled, primitive beauty that stretches, literally, for miles. My wife and I were often the only ones on this expansive area -- for hours! Reading and relaxing while admiring the scenery was our favorite 'activity'. There's a daily snorkeling trip out to the nearby reef. There's also a serviceable tennis and adjacent shuffleboard court. Both are good for a casual game. We enjoyed riding bikes along Pine Cay's criss-crossing sand 'roads'. You can ride down to the Aquarium on the south side of the Cay for some snorkeling, kayaking or fishing. The MC can also arrange day trips to nearby Cays and for scuba dives.
People: MC's staff is comprised, mostly, by locals. Many have been employed for years. They all provide a high quality of service and display, in their own individual way, a sense of charm. The resort is small. The staff does take the time to get to know you. The MC's size also facilitates getting to know other guests. Exchanging pleasantries evolves into mingling. We found that because other guests were there for the same reasons we were, we had at least one common bond. The atmosphere is conducive to getting to know each other. However, you are not 'forced' to socialize. While we enjoyed the company of others, there were several times when we just wanted to be by ourselves. The MC is also used by the other homeowners on Pine Cay. We found them and their families to be very conscientious and respectful of our desire for peace and quiet.
The reason I wanted to write in such detail about our experience at the MC was how I felt after leaving -- totally rejuvenated. I will admit that the MC appeals to a discernable taste and style. There are no TVs or phones. There is no 'nightlife'. There isn't a long list of activities to occupy every waking minute of the day. You will not find Four Seasons sophistication. Think of a casual, more rustic elegance. What the MC provides is an atmosphere where one can 'heal' (mentally and physically), a place where you can spend some quality time with a significant other and take in the great sights (awesome turquoise colored water) and sounds (tradewinds blowing a sea grape leaf across the sand) that makes the Caribbean special. One definition of 'vacation' is "a time for rest". It is because of this that I think every one of us could use a couple of nights at the Meridian Club.
