We were three couples of family and friends. Castaway is basically 2 duplex homes, so we took up most of it with our group. It was great. The king size beds, the very adequate kitchenettes, plenty of hot water for showers, clean, comfortable, and away from.....well.....everything. The pure turquoise waters are just 100 steps from the front porch, clean white sand for a mile in each direction, and NOBODY there but us. The rooms come replete with beach chairs and umbrellas and we were out there every day, sometimes watching the sun come up, every time watching it set. Took our trout fishing rigs with it and were able to catch some very tasty small fish off the small coral heads just off the beach. Not "great" snorkeling, but enough to go out and get some exercise, cool off from sitting on the beach. We saw whales pretty much every day, often right from our front porch. The staff kept our rooms very clean, linens all very clean with none of that mustiness that you often find in the pillows and mattress in some ocean side resorts. The entire experience was laid back, easy, and very simple. Located on the north end of the Island, about 12 minutes by buggy at the end of a dirt road, you are away from the town proper, away from all noise and distractions. We had food,, wine, beer, and water shipped in and set up for us by Haidee, made having breakfast and some lunches very easy. Also made it easy for cocktail hour, cards and Rummy Cube at sunset.
Porter's island Thyme serves up some great food with a really nice variety on the menu, killer desserts, always great service with a smile. Porter and Haidee Williams make every effort as good hosts to include everyone in the goings on, help you get integrated into the community and how it operates, as well as just plain making you feel welcome.
We did some whale watching and scuba diving. Not "great" diving but pleasurable. We did get to hear the whales singing, which was most awesome. Had whales breaching 60 yards off the bow of our dive boat and that was very spectacular.
Salt Cay is a small rustic little island, but the accommodations are not. Simple, yes...but simple and easy had all of us going home with fond memories. We were definitely on "Island Time" when we returned home. I still had my toes in the sand and eyes on the horizon for several days. Very peaceful.
