“Small island, beautiful place and big hearts!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2012

This was the island experience we were looking for. Salt Cay is beutiful, the lodging at Castaway was very comfortable, and the magic of waking up every morning with the first rays of sun and the sound of the sea... you just have to experience it first hand! But a huge part of this experience has to do with the owners/managers: Porter and Haidee. They definitely go the extra mile for their guests. And they are also fun and friendly! And I cannot say the same of other people we met in the island... Anyway, going back to Castaway our room was big, comfortable, with nice island decor, kitchenette (bring your own supplies from Grand Turk or Provo!), and the beach location just perfect. I definitely recommend the place.

Room Tip: all 4 rooms are very similar to each other!

The reviews are spot on, we spent 2 lovely weeks at the Castaway on Salt Cay. Upon first contact, literally months before our arrival Haidee and Porter made us feel welcome, they were both gracious and accommodating. Our travel time of two days brought us to the little airport on Salt Cay, where Porter and Apol greeted us with warm smiles. Apol took our luggage to the Castaway and Porter, always the quintessential host, gave us a tour of the quaint little island. The accommodations at the Castaway are both beautiful and comfortable. Thanks to Haidee, Porter, Apol and Rubin we had wine, cheese, crackers and some of Netty's bread to enjoy on the deck prior to dinner at Island Thyme. Island Thyme is an establishment worthy of many visits throughout the day for delicious food (thank you again Lolli), local conversation and of course libation! Back to the Castaway, Rubin stealthily keeps it immaculate while you are away exploring the island by bicycle, snorkeling, diving, whale watching or just strolling the beach. This island and its few beautiful inhabitants are rich with history and personality. Although our time here was short and represents only a snapshot in their lives, we left with an imprint of memories that will last a lifetime. A special thanks to Tim Dunn for making my dream of seeing a humpback in its natural habitat come true! Also thanks to Mr. Dickerson, Netty, the "Salt Ladies", Hartful, Lionell, Debbie and the crew at Salt Cay divers (esp. Richard) and even Dwight for making this such a special/unique vacation!

All I can say is this place is P-E-R-F-E-C-T!! If you are up for exploring, meeting the locals, eating great food and ....interesting drinks - this is the place for you. The accomodations at the Castaway were perfection and Haidee and Porter were the best hosts. North Beach is beautiful, no one around and you can walk in either direction and never see a single person. Having a buggy cart enabled us to explore the island in every direction.

I'll never forget this place and plan on going back, the simple life is the way of life.

We were looking for a holiday away from it all and we found it on Salt Cay. The island is unique and authentic with a spare beauty. The little house "Castaway" was just perfect. We could see the turquoise water and big beautiful sky from our canopied bed. Our kitchen was fully equiped, the sitting area artfully appointed. Two big french doors led to the covered porch where we had our morning coffee; often we purchased fish directly from the fisherman and cooked it for our evening meals. Often we ate at Porter's Island Thyme where the ambiance was lively and inclusive. We shopped in the local grocery stores, and before we got there, Haidee stocked our fridge with groceries purchased on Grand Turk.
The island's history is fascinating; it is very easy to get around on bike or golf cart. There are pleny of places to hike and explore.
Our visit was further enhanced by our wedding right on "our" beach. Haidee and Porter were so helpful getting us organized with paperwork and decorating. We made Greek cookies in the Island Thyme kitchen with Lolli; Ruben and Apol set up the driftwood canopy; we decorated with flowers from Haidee's garden, and had a champagne toast on our porch with our new best friends (the great people we met on the beach or around "town").
The island, its people and the Castaw!ay cottage were all beyond perfect. It was and unforgettable experience

Room Tip: Castaway on the North beach is unbelievable: gorgeous and private

One word … PERFECTION! If you’re looking for a low-key paradise vacation, look no further.

We stayed for one week and still would have liked to stay longer! Salt Cay and Castaway are a perfect pair. The island itself is small, providing an intimate feeling and loads of privacy. Castaway is on the North with a fabulous white sand beach … literally just step outside of your island home and head straight in the magnificent turquoise water for a snorkel or a swim. On a ‘busy’ day, you may see six people but more often you’ll find you have the beach to yourself. The room is very well appointed with all you’ll need for a comfortable and relaxing stay. Make yourself a cup of coffee in the morning and sit on your private deck and enjoy the spectacular view. In the unlikely event you need anything; the ever accommodating Ruben is never more than a stones throw away.

Haidee is simply the best. She is such a lovely human being and is amazing at getting you set up and helping secure any/all of your needs. She is beyond accommodating, from pre-arrival straight through your entire visit. She even secured a grocery list and stocked them in our island paradise before we arrived. Upon arrival she provided a tour of the island, complete with some local flavor. She’ll hook you up with Tim and some fabulous boat trips (we literally swam with the whales).

Regarding transportation, you can access golf carts or bicycles for transportation (yet another area where Haidee is most helpful). Bicycles were great way to get around and Haidee even has lights for them to help you navigate in the evening. This is also a good way to help work off some of the delicious food you’ll be sure to love at Porter’s Island Thyme Bistro, which is simply a MUST.

Many thanks to Haidee, Porter, Ruben, Lolli, Apol, and the local fun bunch (led by the fabulous Newton as well as Kevin) for providing us with a fabulous and memorable vacation. We look forward to seeing you all again!

Room Tip: Can't go wrong ... all rooms offer the same accommodations.

We were looking for a certain type of vacation for New Years Eve. Wanted: Something quaint, but nice, not too commercial or over-developed, yet still not overly isolated. A bungalow, a cottage, away from it all, but still where you can enjoy some company when you want. Castaways was the perfect spot. We found it at the beginning our search for lodging in Turks & Caicos, and Haidee was extremely helpful. Castaways is largely what sold us on the island of Salt Cay. It had everything we needed - a fantastic little cottage right on gorgeous white sand beaches overlooking the gorgeous turqouise waters, with all the amenities we could hope for. It was the perfect combination of seclusion when we wanted to spend time alone or relaxing on the beach, but not to far away from the primitive little village where we could enjoy wonderfully friendly company, delicious food, and festive drinks at Porter's Island Thyme. It was the perfect combination of adventure & activities crossed with much needed R&R. A quote was made during this trip: "you just walked in to a novel". And that is true. This is the type of place you can only imagine in a novel. And we found it in real life. Thank you Porter & Haidee for our most memorable vacation yet. :)

We were on Provo and decided last minute to go to Salt Cay. We were lucky that Haidee had a room available for the night at Castaways. It was a very nice unit on the north beach. We rented a golf cart and explored the island during our short time there, enough to know we want to go back for longer. Castaways has a great view, the room is very nicely decorated and well kept. There are only 4 rooms so you'll see few, if any, other people on the beautiful beach. We want to go back!
