“Very poor standard of food and a manager who couldnt care less!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2010

I visited The Grand Hotel for Sunday lunch with my wife and her parents. We booked the same day and were offered a table at 3:30pm. I was a little surprised that they were still serving 'lunch' this late in the day but we gratefully took the available table.
It turns out I was right to be concerned that they took a booking so late. We all ordered either beef or lamb shank and clearly all the food had been sat out and kept warm for a number of hours. The beef was like leather, the lamb was tough and only luke warm and the mashed potato had skin on it like a chamois! What was underneath the skin may have been suitable for putting up wallpaper, but it certainly wasnt edible. The yorkshire pudding shattered as soon as you touched them, again as they had been sat around waiting to be eaten for what could have been days!
The disappointment continued when the desserts came, as the 'sticky toffee pudding' was a plain sponge with a dribble of caramel sauce and half a scoop of ice cream!
The first waitress that started to clear our table did not bother to enquire whether we had enjoyed our meals. The second did, and when I listed the many issues, she said she would inform the chef. And that was the last that was heard of it. We spent over £120 between four of us and we'd have received better food and better service at a fast food restaurant!
I wrote to the manage of the hotel when I returned home (my wife and I live 150 miles from Tynemouth and due to time restraints did not have the opportunity to take the issue further on the day). After about two weeks I hadnt had a response so I wrote again, and again I received no response. Finally when I wrote a third letter and sent it recorded delivery I was deemed fit to get a letter back.
In short the manager informed me that the hotel had received no other complaints that day about the food, and that was that. Not even an apology!
Id strongly say that unless you want to be left very disappointed and severely out of pocket, stay away from the restaurant at the Grand at all costs!

Great Hotel , no problems really but our " Grand " experience was spoiled by a rude waitress and unfortunate breakfast experience.
We were about to go out for a meal and decided to have a drink at the bar , I needed to go back to the room and so my wife went to get the drinks in, the waitress kept her and another person stood there whilst she chatted with her collegue, she was complaining about the amount of work she was bieng asked to do so all around could hear, when she had finished she turned and serve us , she sharply asked for the room number and when we told her she said she needed to see the card, we produced it and she looked at , said she didnt have her glasses and asked us to tell her what it was, she was curt , abrupt and rude. Its just not what you expect when you stay in such aplace where the staff are all so friendly, polite and the service is excellent Especially at reception. Breakfast however was a bit of a fiasco when we asked where we should sit to be told anywhere, only then to be told to move when they took the order, then our coffee and toast went to the original table and we were left waiting for ages, then when the breakfast came the sausage ( vegetarian ) was actually stone cold, then we waited again for ages for this to be replaced only to then find that the rest of the meal was then cold and the sausage pretty discusting anyway ( please dont serve herb sausages for brekfast as a vegetarian op¬tion ) I would stay there again , just think we had a couple of unfortunate incidents.

Last minute booking and a good rate. Stayed for two nights, days were grey and damp and the purpose of the visit sad, but the views of the sea and the welcome of the staff uplifted the spirits. The public rooms were beautiful, comfortable and food was reasonably priced and good fodder. Our first room was on the third floor and was worn and smelly, but it was quickly changed to 218 with four poster, jacuzzi and sofa. This was warm comfortable and although well used, was very clean. Throughout the night you can hear the waves on the shore! Fabulous. I would highly recommend this hotel - different from the chains and a family feel. Just choose your room wisely.

Our son had his wedding reception here and we stayed overnight after the wedding. All parents probably feel hard done by when they have to pay for or contribute to the not insignificant cost of a wedding. The B&G chose the Grand and I can only say we felt it was worth every penny and more. The location is wonderful, the interior fantastic for weeding guests in the lounge and pictures on the gransd staircase. The MC (Leonard ) ran the proceedings with military precision. The wedding breakfast food was fantastic but if I had to choose it was the sweet that did it for me little samples of a lot of puds. Evening do was great with a smashing disco and a quality buffet. Stayed overnight in a superior room which was nice but the view from the window along the beach was fantastic. Thanks to staff and all for a "grand day".

Stayed at this hotel for a weekend with husband. First impressions are that it is a very grand hotel. Very busy with weddings and quite noisy at night from the function suites. Tynemouth has a beautiful beach and a few busy pubs which were really busy over the 2 nights we were there. The hotel has a pub which is quiet lively and serves good food at reasonable prices We walked into Whitley Bay on Saturday afternoon and could not believe how run down this resort is, the few bars we seen had strippers and were jam packed with Stag&Hen crowds.Back to the hotel. Breakfast was nice and plentiful and there appeared to be ample waiting staff. Rooms were cleaned every day and fresh towels left. Beds were comfortable enough for 2 night stay. Music from wedding function on both nights was really loud until after midnight and could be heard clearly in room.

We arrived here after completing the C2C bike ride. We were originally booked into another hotel down the coast but didn't fancy the look of it so we went back to The Grand and got a twin room for £80 including breakfast. The hotel is great. It's plush and just what we needed. The staff were friendly and the room quality was excellant. Breakfast the next morning was the best on the trip, as you would expect from a large hotel. If I were doing the C2C again I would certainly stay here. It's easy walking distance to the main street in Tynemouth with all the pubs and bars too so you can celebrate finishing.

Beautiful location but overall experience, sadly, spoilt by poor service. Unless part of a wedding party, be prepared to be ignored, repeatedly, by staff at breakfast. Larger than average, pleasant room but no blind at window so it felt like being in a goldfish bowl. Curtains needed to be drawn on a lovely summer evening to avoid being seen from the outside. These points were mentioned in the Customer Satisfaction Questionnaire and a follow up letter but so far, disappointing to say, neither a simple acknowledgement nor the curtesy of a reply has been received. Shortage of alternative comparable accommodation may be reason for apparent indifference.
