“Open all day”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2014

Not having the best service, the food is ok and the best of it, great views of the ocean and a kitchen open all day long.

“Not to repeat”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2014

Despite the location at the seaside, the atmosphere in the restaurant is far from being pleasant. Too crowded, and a long time waiting to be served (more than 40 minutes), even booking in advance. The "caldeirada" missed a strong flavour and the fish was tasteless.
The price was Ok.

“A great place on the ocean - worth a car trip!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2014

The "O Barbas" restaurant is, in fact, a chain of three places, 50m apart along the Atlantic Ocean promenade in Costa da Caparica. It means "at the bearded man" and refers to the unique facial appearance of its owner, The other unique bit, a part of the atmosphere, is that they are strong supporters of Benfica FC, and are not ashamed to show it :-)

But seriously, this place where you look out at the Atlantic surf and order a variety of authentic Portuguese dishes and wine is well worth a visit. Perhaps lunch is a better occasion because of the view, although if you catch the sunset during the summer dinner - it might be even better.

I said there are three separate restaurants: the first (counting from the entrance to the promenade) is the original place, and it is crewed by a team of cooks and waiters who are over 50 men, who probably been there all their life. The next one along is the first step of expanding the O Barbas empire, and it is crewed by 30-something guys. The third is a young people's place - more aiming to cater for surfers from the beach, and in terms of cuisine it's not rating. I hesitate to say which of the first two is better: they are certainly different in their approach to local food and each is to an individual taste.

They both serve various traditional dishes (like your grilled sardines in season), but the old (original) O Barbas is good with cataplanas, while I think the grilled octopus is better in the second one. If you visit several times, try to go through different kinds of grilled local fish (to Portuguese, local means Atlantic - not just from the vicinity). The house wines in both places are very nice, the white douro is always a certainty.

The only problem is that you can't reach this place from Lisbon without car - but if you have one rented, it's well worth a trip: you will combine it with a walk along the very long promenade (or a swim if it's not December - the locals disapprove when you try that, probably because it's unsafe), and a visit to the local market in the middle of town (just 300m inwards from the beach).

“Decisamente orata o spigola alla brace”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

Good place to stay for dinner or lunch time. This restaurant is in front of the ocean and it offers the typical portugues meals. I tried seabass grilled with french fries. And second time I went, I tried the sea bream. Both delicious! Fresh fish perfectly cooked.
A bottle of white wine and the fruits we spent something like € 35.
I recommend this place for grilled fish in Caparica.

“Good and entertaining”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

Barbas has two restaurants (Tertulia and Catedral) and a bar, in the same location (the promenade of Costa de Caparica. The food at the two restaurants is the same, but I prefer going to the Barbas Tertúlia, as it has less people. On weekends and summertime these restaurants are very busy. The kitchen works all day and all night long, so it is a great option of you're hungry after normal lunch or dinner hours. The food isnt going to win any awards, but its tasty and well done. Portions are big, prices are ok, and the whole theme of Benfica is worth checking it out.
